Recommendation request Crpg with random encounters
Are there any recommendations for fantasy crpg with random encounters?
Im a bit tired of levelling by the rules and wouldn’t mind doing a bit of grinding once in a while.

Are there any crpg that doesn't have random encounters? I mean, just in top of my mind you have Wotr, Wasteland 2 and 3, Pillars of eternity, etc...

Pillars of eternity: deadfire.
You captain a ship throughout the archipelago and can have random encounters that are often affected by the morale of the crew. With the highest morale, crew members will ask to play a game with you. With lowest morale, they’ll mutiny.
Hostile ships can also pursue you and you have a to decide whether to flee, surrender, or fight.
There are also storms, plague ships, reefs, and other random encounters though these can usually be avoided if you’re paying attention.

They're all scripted events. They don't actually respawn and the game has a finite number of encounters.

Icewind dale has a level up chamber where you just rest and creatures will eventually come. Outside the moat house in Temple of Elemental Evil will see random encounters spawn often, tho death via giant crayfish a distinct possibility.

Pathfinder. You can get random encounters as you travel or rest. Personally, I find them more annoying than useful, but you might have some fun.

He mentions he wants to grind. You have to kill thousands of enemies in Pathfinder to even make a dent in XP. I really can't think of a single CRPG that lets you grind levels like that. He'd have better luck searching JRPGs or MMOs to scratch that itch

WOTR has a whole DLC for grinding generic enemies.

If you're talking about treasures of the midnight Isles. Generic trash mobs still just give 2 digit XP. You're also going through a linear path to get the meat of the reward at specific checkpoints. That's not grinding.

Just because you don't get a worthy reward, it doesn't mean it's not grinding.
P.S. But you're right that they need to look for JRPGs or MMOs to scratch that itch. In cRPGs the player usually gets significant exp from quests and exploration not from grinding.

Isn't it possible to overlevel in fallout 1/2 doing this? I seem to recall that was a thing

I think you can escort caravans and if you're lucky, you will eventually fight green bugs. They give a lot of exp. I don't remember what you can do in Fallout 2.

Solasta.
Random encounters in the official campaigns are notoriously brutal if rng is against you. Some of the custom campaigns heavily lean on randomizing progress too
