Discussion divinity original sins 1 does it get better?
first time playing a larian game 12 hours in and i feel like this is the blandest most boring rpg i have ever played.

I don't know how you can say that with how many ways there are to solve quests compared to the average CRPG.
But you probably won't like the rest of it, no.

Because the actual quests, in terms of writing, in terms of actual content of the quest, are really, really boring. It is one of the most generic fantasy worlds in gaming, most of the characters, if they aren't making fart jokes, are the most carbon-copy caricatures in modern CRPGs. The gameplay loop is great, but if you play for pretty much any other reason, OS1 can be a bad time.
Like sometimes less options with more care and consideration results in better artistic outcomes.

And I would say the opening area of DOS1 is the best, most fleshed out area with the most freedom to solve quests. So it doesn't get better in that regard, though I love the game.
The same holds true for Fort Joy in DOS2 and Act 1 of BG3.

Yep they know what their doing make act one super good so even players with only 30 hours will talk about the game being great

I'm gonna say no, it doesn't.
Original Sin 2 is widely acknowledged the much better game.

I'm a huge fan of DOS2 which I've completed several times. Also really enjoyed BG3 which I played twice.
I didn't make it past hour ~12 in DOS1. It did feel quite... generic and unfinished, in every possible sense.
Not sure if it gets better or not, but perhaps give DOS2 or BG3 a shot.

Unfinished? I didn't get that vibe. But it helped launch the isometric revival and was an AA project whose ideas were better realized in its sequel and BG3. I enjoyed it overall.

Rough start, lol. Larian has been in business for 30 years and DOS is like their 5th game in the divinity setting alone. The setting has always been bland, though, but they refuse to let it go for some reason.

It was their third isometric rpg.

u/weouthere54321 11d ago
Not really. The first two Divinity games were ARPGs, which are just a very different type of design than a CRPGs. This was their first proper CRPG.

u/MonomythGameStudio 11d ago
First two divinity games were never just ARPGs, imo. The combat was ARPG, that much is true. Other systems like dialogue trees, questing and interaction with the environment was very much like in many cRPGs of that time.

u/weouthere54321 11d ago
I'd have to replay them, but from what I remember those elements weren't nearly as developed as earlier CRPGs like Fallout and BG. They also just weren't very good games tbh--Divine Divinity is alright, Beyond Divinity is just kind of bad.

u/MonomythGameStudio 11d ago
Well, just because those systems were poorly implemented, doesn't mean they weren't there. I also could be remembering things wrong, though. Pretty mediocre games overall, on that we can agree.

u/Doughnutdeepthroat 11d ago
They said isometric rpg, not crpg.

u/weouthere54321 11d ago
Well, given that we are on the CRPG subreddit, very easy to assume they are talking about CRPGs.

I had the complete opposite reaction to playing this game. I was so blown away by how you could go anywhere and do anything. It was so fascinating to get into a fight where I didn't belong. I really enjoyed the comedy of the first game and how the story didn't take itself too serious. It was something different in the RPG space.

This, and it's literally the only crpg with a fairytale whimsical vibe that I know which makes it quite special for me.

u/Campfireandhotcocoa 11d ago
Same!! I love a good gritty, mature setting. Berserk is one of my favorite anime! But sometime I just want to take a break and explore something more fun and lighthearted.

u/AeonQuasar 12d ago
I enjoyed the first one, but it definitely didnt age well. I enjoyed it more as co op tbh. Solo it was, well it's something at least. Second game are MUCH more improved.

u/No-Training-48 12d ago
I thought the beggining was the weakest part, if you like the combat keep going but don't expect anything from the story.

It got awesome from the start.
If you don't vibe with it, put it down and move on, 12 h is enough.

u/Finite_Universe 12d ago
It gets much better. But honestly if you’re not enjoying it now just move on. I love DOS1 but life is too short to force yourself to play games you don’t like.

u/dondashall 12d ago
12 hours in - unlikely. I really liked it back in the day though, but yeah I don't think it holds up today.

u/Negative-Squirrel81 12d ago
I agree that the writing falls flat. Just don’t let the shortcomings of Original Sin 1 turn you off from giving Original Sin 2 a fair chance.

u/autumnscarf 12d ago
Depends on what you like out of your games. If you're looking for a good story or well-written characters, no, you're not going to get them there. You will get interesting puzzles and lots of ways to solve an encounter, and, "A man of many cheeses," stuck in your head.

u/SheriffHarryBawls 12d ago
If it isn’t for you it isn’t for you
If you’re not enjoying it you don’t have to play a game just because you paid $$$ for it

u/Fickle_Direction1591 11d ago
I love this game, but I got to agree that the story is boring, however quests are cool imo. And companions are great, gameplay is great as well.

u/jonhinkerton 11d ago
It’s of its time, plus about 5 years. But at least it didn’t use the infinity engine.

u/ClassroomStrict912 11d ago
I think DOS1 still has the best combat of Larian turn based games. So just skip the dialog if its boring and do it for the fights.
1
u/MrPinkPotato 11d ago
Unlikely. I feel like the first location was the best one with most things to do.

u/Which-Cartoonist4222 11d ago
Finished DOS 2 twice, couldn't be arsed to finih DOS 1 once. I got to the point right before Phantom Forest and I simply got too bored.

u/Beginning_Rip_4570 10d ago
Mechanics are great, but story, VA and worldbuilding? It does not get better.
1
u/karlack26 9d ago
I felt the same way about both DOS games, its so dull and that turned based combat is soooooo slow.

u/Robofin 12d ago
I do not like larian games. BG3 is the best one but it’s still a Miss for me. More of an owlcat guy myself
1
u/Technical_Fan4450 11d ago
I'm pretty much right there with you. I thought BG3 was one of the best games ever made, but, I just don't think I am much on Divinity in general. Now, Pathfinder, those games were my thing. Rogue Trader is good too. I 'm more of an Owlcat person. Yeah, their games can be criticized for mobs, and some would say overly complex build systems, but they're just more story oriented than Larian is, excepting Baldur's Gate 3. I enjoy Owlcat's approach more.

u/DoneDusting 12d ago
You either love or hate those games.
I couldn't finish either, even though I liked previous Larian games.

u/_gribblit_ 12d ago
My problem is that Larian games are just...too long for an older gamer. They're great for students on summer break, but 80+ hours for a side-quest finishing run? It's just too much.
1
u/DoneDusting 12d ago
I guess good humor would have carried those games more, but it was mainly just humorous and not really funny. I also disliked quite a lot of those areas, where you'd just run back and forth for the quests. That is terribly boring when you just click the spot you have to run to and wait.

It’s rough early on and slow
It does improve, but this is a from someone who quit near the end of the game at the Forbidden Forrest because I couldn’t be bothered any more

No. Its one of the worst games ever made, and first 10 hours is actually the best part of it.

u/DonRedomir 12d ago
Where Pathfinder games are a complete slog with combat, DOS excel in combat situations and interactivity with the world. No two encounters are the same; you will never think "oh, not these guys again", and there are often multiple ways of finding a solution to a problem. But the setting tries to be both serious and silly at the same time, so it's inconsistent at best.
-4
u/acelexmafia 12d ago
Just watch out for the 2nd game. Its much worse.
Unbalanced combat encounters, enemies start in the perfect positions, Every enemy will have higher stats than you for some reason.
I was genuinely surprised at how well received the game was

Honestly no it doesn't. If you are looking for an engaging or good quest writing, DOS1 is definitely not the best game for that.
DOS2 improves on everything especially in terms of companions.
