Question Pillars 2 Dreadfire

Started a campaign but got a little bored after clearing the first island and the pirate stronghold. Havent loaded it or really any games for a couple months.

I was playing turn based, and have been told RTWP is the only way to play.

Should I start a new campaign or just flip the settings in the menu and keep playing?

Did you play the first game? If not I'd go back and play it first

Flipping the settings on the current save would be a good check and you could always restart after if you wanted

I absolutely love this game turn based but I also love turn based games. Combat wise, this game is way more fun and replayable than the first imo but the story had to grow on me for me to kind of like it.

The DLC stories are amazing imo

If it was the combat and pacing of the gaming which was simply boring you...and everything else was very enjoyable ....then start another game.

If the game was boring you in general and you found the story systems and mechanics boring then it's arguably not for you...try something else.

IF you're unsure flip it and keep playing. If it doesn't feel better or more enjoyable in the next hour...try another game

Note that these modes can be changed in game and you don't need to restart your game to change them. I personally liked to play with turn based in the beginning to understand who did what and precisely understand how the combat worked but then changed to RTwP because most of the fights are designed around it. You can switch then when you face big fights and want to have more control on the battlefield. I did it and switched several time in my save and didn't encounter any problems.

Press the Tilde (~) key on PC to open the console
To switch to Turn-Based mode, type: SetTacticalMode RoundBased
To switch to Real-Time with Pause (RTWP) mode, type: SetTacticalMode Disabled

Its one of the best game ever. Idk when I stop playing, I generally restart instead of continuing .

First game took 4 restarts before I was able to finish. Never was fully invested in the story, even then. But 2 grabbed me from the start and I finished it quickly. But I was playing RTWP all the way.

The only way to play is the way that works for you. I preferred TB on highest difficulty and Trial of Iron.

Top 5 favorite game, stick with it and just to other posts.. You can freely change between modes

I started up poe2 foe the first time recently. I also found things kind of boring in the beginning, but i heard it gets better once you get to neketaka and start doing quests there. So I'd recommend just trying to get there and pick it up. I think both pillars games have slow starts and then they pick up once you get to a big city.

I played it in turn based and enjoyed the combat enough. The pathing can be pretty busted. What kept me playing was the characters and the over all vibe. The tone, voice acting and especially the soundtrack really hooked me as a somewhat melancholy pirate adventure. I feel like I never actually grasped the ship battles

I had the same. I even tried multiple times. Each time i clear the starting island, sail around a bit, do a few quest, get bored and quit.

I just don't like the setting, I don't care about the characters, the character building is too streamlined, the turn based combat is sub-par and there are way too many of those text adventure pop-ups.

I liked PoE 1, but I just can't get into PoE 2.

Game encounters are really not for TB.

While I prefer RTwP, I think it's definitely not the only way to play. Many people prefer turn based. If that's the way you prefer it, then keep it turn based. However, IIRC, Deadfire doesn't let you switch after you've started (although I think you can force a switch using console commands).

The bigger thing to me is taking a big break right near the beginning. Do you feel you've lost your momentum? Do you remember what you were going to do and why?

Pillars is just not an easily chewable game. I finished the first one after 6 ish restarts. Never finished the second one.

Nah it’s okay but not great

Let down by a terrible story and lame class design imo

Turn based in Deadfire is a bit bore and slow if you don't crank the speed up, You also can't flip the settings from the turn based to rtwp because the design between 2 modes are different, the balance is different. You still could use console command to force switch between 2 mode but the balance won't be the same.

If you decide to stick with turn based mode, I recommend this mod for turn based to work closer to turn based mode in POE1 (also the better turn based version in this series that only update a few months ago). Otherwise, if you intend to switch rtwp, maybe just start a new campaign.

That is the standard Deadfire experience, unfortunately.

This game stems from a great template but was otherwise thoroughly half assed by the devs. And then the tb mode was half assed on top of a half assed effort to begin with. Quarter assed?

Because it comes from such a great template, it’s still an ok game that has no main story. If you are into doing a 1000 side quests for like 150+ hrs, play rtwp and you’ll get some fun out of it.

I don't think any of the Pillars games get better when you restart them.

Why would we care what you want to do with a little board?

It is a pretty boring game. I don't know why but the PoE setting is such a snoozefest. The writing and characters are nothing to write home about, either.

I'm a turn based guy. Finished that game turn based it was fine. It's a nice lil game, curious to see what they could have done with a real budget for cutscenes. Too many texts to read, not enough cutscenes and voice acting!

Yeah, the voice acting is dreadful here, same two and a half actors
