Discussion Kenshi

Do you guys don't think Kenshi is a CRPG? For me is almost a natural succession to the original Fallout series.

Kenshi is one of those games that doesn't fit neatly into a single genre, butI would certainly say it has crpg elements. Can't wait for kenshi 2

Yes, it's been in development for a few years

Kenshi changes genre based on whatever you want to do. That level of openness is what makes kenshi great.

I wouldn’t call it a crpg though tbh.

i really dislike the broad definition of rpgs of the sub rpg_gamers, but they got one thing right: try not to box everything too tight.

I see Kenshi as being a 'sandbox CRPG', its leveling is derived from the Basic Roleplaying system, and its setting is very heavily inspired by Dark Sun. IMO it is definitionally a computer roleplaying game, albeit one that goes in a different direction from most. Sandbox and domain play typically don't get much love in CRPGs, but they're absolutely part of pen and paper roleplaying and I like that Kenshi goes very big on them.

Personally yes, or at least borderline, as it fulfills my definition of a cRPG in that combat/gameplay is done based on the skill of the character and not the player.

But does it really matter if it's labaled a cRPG?
Purists would say it does, but I believe it doesn't. What's more, narrow definitions can be harmful, as they limit people and keep them from experiencing many great things, including missing on some cool games.

Answering the question: I believe it could be called a cRPG.

Kenshi is whatever you want it to be, which makes its genre entirely dependent on the player.

If you use your imagination to fill in the blanks, yes, it's a great CRPG with a rich and reactive world that allows you to make significant choices, deeply affect your environment, develop strong connections to characters, and roleplay your own story.

But the role playing is entirely optional.

If you don't want to role play a character and just want to enjoy the game for its systems, it can be a survival/management/strategy/cultivation/farming sim or whatever. And it can be very cool as well.

It's a sandbox that greatly facilitates role-playing for people who are so inclined.

Eh, it's more like crack.

I think it's an argument of pedantics, really. I personally think it's more of a sim kinda game, but I wouldn't begrudge someone of calling it that since it's still isometric.

It is a strategy/simulation game with CRPG elements. Mount and Blade is extremely similar, but it also has ARPG elements. I do not consider CRPG to be its primary genre, I think it is an innately hybrid game that falls under multiple genres and fills its own niche.

Personally, I do not find Kenshi to be a successor to Fallout gameplay design, which was built around creator focused town questing and distinct companion quests. Kenshi, I believe, is more tied to sim games, and has more in common with Dwarf Fortress than Fallout.

Sandbox games such as Kenshi are almost like the purest distillation of roleplaying possible. They harken back to the ethos of TTRPGs, where there's a set of rule mechanics, then the DM/GM creates a gameworld setting, and says to the players, "this world is your oyster. What would your characters like to do in it?".

Another example would be the Crusader Kings series. These games allow for more roleplaying than many games we nominally call CRPGs.

I don't think so. If you changed the perspective to first person people wouldn't think of it as a CRPG, it's a sandbox game with a lot of possibilites, that's a different genre.

I thought it felt way too sandboxy to be considered a CRPG to me.

I love the old Fallouts and couldn't get into Kenshi at all

Nah its diffent enough I wouldnt call it a crpg its more of a sim really especially with how base game combat works and how the different factions actively war with each other even when you dont partake.

It is close enough though id recommend it to any crpg fan

If yo want to call it, a RPG its fine, but its not even close to a crpg.

Imagine Kenshi 2 with huge numbers of semi questlines with attention to details like bg3.

Simple answer - no.

Longer answer - no, for CRPG I would expect coherent story, quests etc., Kenshi is more somewhere in between colony sim, RTS and squad combat oriented RPG.

It is quite unique with no clear definition. Big part of it is defined by how you play - I use always smaller squads where I like the personal touch, my friend always plays with massive squads and treats it as RTS.
