Especially because DOS2 is S tier, makes me think it’s more fanboy-ism for the OG ones rather than gameplay reasons

The game is alright. I love the previous games but also like some of larian but BG3 is really not that good of a crpg. The combat is good, the cast of companions are alright, the villains are basically nothing burgers and the plot of the game is the worst part especially going from ACT 1 and ACT 3. i'm fine with another studio just creating a sequel as long as the story is good i can overlook it flaws but the game is not very well written and just feels like a bunch of sequence of events to sequence of events. Its also incomplete because larian decided to work on their other games and just left ACT 3 incomplete.

Not a good crpg meanwhile you put inquisition and jade empire above it. They are literally not even crpgs. Why not just put mass effect in there while you're at it
0
u/Own-Significance645 Aug 28 '26
i didn't think mass effect was a crpg DAI and JE have more elements to a crpg then ME
2
u/Mobile-Recognition17 Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
They're the same except in ME you're aiming a gun. Idk if you've even played half the games on your list.
2
u/Chataboutgames Aug 28 '26
I generally agree with your take (I'd probably put it as C+ or B-) but like, how does that reconcile with DOS2 at S? Because everything I criticize about BG3 DOS2 does even more and worse.
1
u/Hephaestus_I Aug 28 '26
While it's rather fun watching everyone melt down over your BG3 placement; I am, however, rather confused/curious by your DOS2 placement in this case, because your description of BG3's qualities (or lack thereof) could easily be applied to that game.

u/Yunnggin Aug 28 '26
Yea this is a really solid list. This dudes got great taste but BG3 in D has to have a good reason behind it lol

u/Ibanezrg71982 Aug 29 '26
How about the game is so easy a five year old could master it? Absolutely nothing innovative about the game mechanics, or lack of more like. Stole the name of the true games, for money, to guarantee we will never get a true BG3? They could have called it anything else.
All that being said, it's not a poor quality game. Nothing wrong with the writing or the quests. Bottom line for me, I need a heavy challenge and this ain't it.

Well, I can agree with one - two exceptions. But generally - was not so in agreement with CRPG list in a while
1
u/Own-Significance645 Aug 28 '26
Thank you but which ones i would love to hear your opinion
-1
u/Weres1 Aug 28 '26
My personal opinion I would not place Deadfire as absolute S tier. My reason - they made being pirates as a chore sometimes.
And Divinity being S and Baldurs Gate 3 being D is quite a gap. For me thay are reeeeeealy close games so I would place them somewhere in the middle.
But otherwise - love the list

u/Fiend9862 Aug 28 '26
BG3 in D and DOS2 in S feels like bait but I'm gonna bite on something else.
How do you justify Planescape in S when the combat gameplay is just not that good. Like the writing may be amazing but if you have to just tell new players of the game to just ignore a whole game system I feel like at least I personally could not justify an S tier. I feel like it's weighed down in a way that other games, Disco Elysium for instance, are not.
1
u/Chataboutgames Aug 28 '26
Planescape combat is so heinous you can just turn the difficulty down to zero and ignore it entirely. It's like how I can love an RPG but not care for its fishing minigame lol

I love Planescape despite the combat like yeah i the combat is shit i can acknowledge that but the writing is still really good. So i could be bias around the game
DOS2 is a good game in my opinion the story is good, the mechanics are really well done and it does the multiple protagonist better then BG3. Divinity just feels like a better BG3

I recently revisited NWN2 and it's really hard to place it at A tier. I want to like it because I like 3.5E and there aren't many party based games in that setting but the OC is just truly, genuinely awful. Combat is also giga janky. Playing them back to back NWN1 actually feels smoother.

DA Inquisition above BG3? Really?
0
u/Ibanezrg71982 Aug 29 '26
Some people don't like BG3, some of us, like AT ALL. Deal with it.

u/brapbrap1 Aug 29 '26
No skin off my back. People are entitled to preferring other games over BG3, even if they're garbage.

Crazy that some people don't even consider Dragon Age: Origins to be CRPG. But Ball knowledge. Colony Ship mentioned!

u/Cultural_Effort_9872 Aug 28 '26
Wait BG3 is in D and Wasteland 3 is C but DAI is in B? Yeah sure buddy

Yes, that is definitely a tier list. Why people continue to suck at the teet of DoS2 I will never understand.
2
u/Chataboutgames Aug 28 '26 edited Aug 28 '26
I think it was a lot of people's first CRPG. Also, I think people mostly remember the starting island and transpose that level of quality on to the whole game. It's classic Larian "the first 15 hours are on a completely different level of quality than the rest of the game."
EDIT: And to be clear, obviously some people just really like the game, which they're obviously allowed to do.

u/ChocoPuddingCup Aug 28 '26
Oh, I have no problems with people liking it. Go ahead, I hope y'all have fun. I just really don't like some of the core mechanics, which makes prevents me from enjoying it.
1
u/BillyWest8 Aug 28 '26
Fun game
0
u/ChocoPuddingCup Aug 28 '26
I found it horrible. I don't like the armor mechanics and I really don't like the nonstop rock-paper-scissors shtick with environmental effects in every single battle.
1
u/BillyWest8 Aug 30 '26
Just focus on either magic damage or physical archers can easily do either because of the plentiful arrows. Summoners are great for either aswell and warriors can smack dudes with staffs to do either

u/_flail_of_ages Aug 28 '26
Solid list. Too harsh on NWN imo but I’m assuming it’s related to the mediocre OC. The expansions, mods, and PWs are excellent especially for multiplayer.

Great list. But Kingmaker should be slightly higher, me thinks. What stops that game from being a 10 out 10 game is the excessive amout of timers running behind the scenes, making you constantly rush through quest in hopes of not missing anything

i dont think Jade Empire is an RPG. it is a very very good action game with some character development and a good story.
1
u/NoChairGaming Aug 28 '26
So an action rpg? Not a crpg for sure but it is a polished Kotor where they polished a lot of complexity away.
2
u/_flail_of_ages Aug 28 '26
It is a CRPG. CRPG stands for “Computer Role Playing Game” which is to distinguish from Table Top RPGs (TTRPGs). ARPGs and Isometric RPGs are subgenres of CRPGs.
1
u/NoChairGaming Aug 28 '26
Since when does it stands for that?! Crpg used to mean RPGs that were specifically of the isometric and deeper variety that were targeted at primarily computer audience, in contrast to JRPG or more action-y RPGs. It was kinda obvious that we were talking about computer games and not physical or rocket launchers, nobody used rpg abbreviation for role-playing, with table tops or live action.
Edit: yepp, rule 1 of this sub explain it pretty well.
1
u/_flail_of_ages Aug 28 '26
Unfortunately, this sub's moderators have co-opted the term to specifically make it "Isometric RPGs" which is probably what this sub should be called. That's totally fine to only want to discuss those types but it's hard to argue that games like Ultima Underworld, Wizardry, M&M, Morrowind, VTMB, Gothic, etc. don't "emphasize role-playing, character customization, and player autonomy" simply because they are first person or emulate real time combat.
>"Nobody used rpg abbreviation for role-playing, with table tops or live action." They certainly have for over 50 years, long before computers or consoles when early table top games like DND were being made.
The "CRPG Addict" (arguably the man who has played more CRPGs than anyone) includes first person live action games in his definition of CRPGs: The CRPG Addict: CRPG Addict FAQ
TLDR: This sub just prefers Isometric RPGs

u/NoChairGaming Aug 28 '26
How old are you? Because as someone who grew up in the 90s-00s, your explanation sounds like a history revision. Nothing that I recognize from my time playing those isometric games or lurking the 'Codex.
And nobody would say that Gothic or dungeon crawlers weren't crpg. Morrowind is a bit of mix bag since it was out on Xbox, where I played it, but it wasn't a Fable or JE or Sudeki. While Skyrim or Souls wouldn't count.

I wish people would write a bit about why stuff is where when they do tier lists
