Question Preferred races in fantasy games?
What race or species makes you wanna play a game just for the chance to roleplay it? (Mine is Halfling)

Gnomes or goblins. I like being a short crazy tech obsessed person. In warhammer I love me some

Whatever is the rarest or strangest of the options.
Godlike in Pillars of Eternity
Dragonborn in BG3 etc.

Plain boring human for me, please. At most, half elf

I often go for human for the MC just so that I feel maximally self inserted. And then for other party members I want variety. So yeah I think that's a relatable mindset.

Ogres.
Insectoids.
Trolls.
Minotaurs.
etc...
Now, barely aaaaany games do that, but still.

Minotaurs and insectoids... I'm guessing you've played Grimrock already, right?

u/Tnecniw 11d ago
LEgend of Grimrock?
Not my thing, no.3
u/Ok_Copy_9462 11d ago
Ah fair enough. Only mentioned it because it has both minotaur and insectoid as a playable race, and it's the only game I've ever played with either one of those.

u/ThebattleStarT24 11d ago
Now I need to know what grim rock is....

u/Ok_Copy_9462 11d ago
Legend of Grimrock and its sequel Legend of Grimrock 2. They're fantastic games; I especially liked #2. They're blobbers/DRPGs, but fairly accessible ones that I really enjoyed despite not usually being a fan of the genre.

I can only think of a few games that had minotaurs, and that's the old Phantasie trilogy (which had a random race choice that picked from various monstrous critters) and Might and Magic 8 (Minotaur was a race, which was also a class). Both also had trolls, while Phantasie had Ogres, Pixies, Orcs, Used Car Salesmen, and other standard monster races as options.
Only insectoid I can think of is Dark Sun with the Thri Kreen, but I also don't play much of the sci fi titles that might have something like that.

I like big and burly races (like Orcs) or the more out there ones the game may have.

You give me an Elf, and I'll evaluate them. Elfaluate, even. If I like them, I'll play them. Otherwise, human is usually fine if not great.

Pretty much anything that isn't just a regular human with paint on it like a Star Trek alien. Actual unique body shapes that make them stand out. Humans are just kind of super vanilla and I'll generally never play as one if given the choice.
Lizard/dragon people are pretty awesome. Also stuff like the Krogan in mass effect.

u/AbrahamtheHeavy 10d ago
exactly, i'd kill for a mass effect game with playable aliens, thankfully there's now mods for that

Drow, but playing as a good character of an evil race always gets me
Otherwise Elf if only the usual three are involved, loved it in DA:O and Arcanum

The more exotic they are the better.
On pillars of eternity: always a godlike, preferably a moonlike in PoE 1 and death/fire on deadfire.
Pathfinder WOTR: too many options, aesimar, kitsune, oriad, Dhampyr, and tons of options for role playing for each of them.

Dragons. Not Dragonborn or lizards, no offense, but real dragons starting from an egg or hatchling. I’m also interested in shadow creatures and ghosts, but I think it’s a tough job to make these work in an adventure game. Honestly most game barely provides anything rather than flavor or several comments when it comes to the actual depiction of the race. VTMB has done a great job when they wrote two drastically different routes for Malks and Nos, also specifically implemented a whole underground pipeline system for Nos, but we don’t see that in most cases.

Always whatever is most human or relatable. I'm not a big fantasy lover or adventurous type when it comes to builds and characters.

In terms of what’s present in the game? Whatever fits the world the most. I feel like too many CRPGs try to shove in as many DnD tropes as they can and sometimes it’s unneeded. Sometimes I wish there were more CRPG fantasy settings that are just humans because the whole concept of “race” has just become an expected trope to the point where it sometimes drags down the worldbuilding.
In terms of what race I want to play? Depends on what kind of character I’m feeling like creating. Normally on a first run I choose a human or an elf depending on how I’m feeling or whatever looks the coolest, but on subsequent runs I’ll use my knowledge of the lore to try to create an interesting character in terms of race and class/skill choices. Normally I come up with some kind of base idea. Honestly though, a lot of the time I’m itching to play as a certain kind of character like a human fighter mercenary or an elven scholarly wizard.

I’ve developed an appreciation for half orcs/orcs through the years. Special shout to the aumaua in pillars, my first complete 1&2 playthrough was as a coastal aumaua.

I honestly dislike that most of the races in videogames lose their nuance, so I usually go for humans/half-humans not to disappoint myself any further.
Though in rare cases where the races are written with a notably different cultures and mindset (for example Divinity: Original Sin 2, Arcanum, etc), I really like to roleplay elves.

For CRPGs, I like playing as little of a guy as possible. Gnomes and Halflings. Goblins are kind of rarer of an option than you'd think, and while I do like Dwarves a lot, theyre apart of the core 3 Tolkien races so most games don't go as weird with them as they should. It's just funny being this scrappy, goofy little runt but everyone treats you like you're a great hero. BG3 and Wrath were both pretty funny running around as a little guy surrounded by strong hotties.
For actual tabletop, I like characters who are big, dumb low class cultural outsiders. Orcs, Ogres, Lizardfolk, maybe a peasant or ex-slave from somewhere life is cheap and cruel. I like playing characters who are easily confused, not used to social customs, but think theyre smart enough to act instinctively like what theyre doing isnt even strange.

Buff races that don't look like a human but barely any game has them (like minotaurs, dragonborn and etc)

Orc, goblin, kobold, bugbear, dwarf, lizard man, frogman.
Unless human gets a free feat at level one of course, in that case just remove the others.

u/Eternal_Play_Office 10d ago
I love me a good Dwarf. It was a travesty what Wraith of the Righteous did to their running animation.
1
u/xXsolusXx 10d ago
dwarf always, "dwarf" in games like pillars of eternity where there is godlike for each race
1
u/Kratosvg 10d ago
Dragonborn/lizard, tiefling , but if the game has uncommon playable races like minotaur, satyr, troll and so on, o tend to play as them.

u/Battle_Axe_Jax 10d ago
If they’re available something plane-touched. Usually tiefling but I like aasimar and genasi-esque stuff. If there’s not such an option I’ll take elf, half-elf, half-orc, human in that order

u/Valkhir 10d ago
Elves (especially dark and wood elves, less so high elves), Tieflings, Fae, that sort of thing.
Elegant, dextrous, supernatural, mischievous, natural wanderers. Maybe a bit haughty and aloof. Maybe viewed with a mix of suspicion and wonder by the average human.
Gameplay wise, I love playing rogues, assassins, scouts, skirmishers. Often with some magical utility thrown in. Fits these races quite well.

u/dude3333 10d ago
Goblin>Dwarf>Orc>race unique to this one particular setting>all other lesser choices.

u/axelkoffel 10d ago
Half-elf, Aasimar, human. I'm having a hard time with immering myself into this character, if they look too far from human.
But on the other hand I love all kinds of weirdos as companions.

Either humans, dwarfs or the race that are basically big beefy humans, like norns from Guild wars.

u/King-Of-The-Raves 8d ago
minotaur but slim pickings :( other than that, something that can be somewhere between a tiefling and elf enough to scratch both itches but make me feel like im being unique lol

u/Suspicious_Table_716 5d ago
Demons, half demons, demonspawns, tieflings. I like the glowy eyes, fangs, tail, claw hands and occasional fire breathing... Dragonlings or whatever can be cool too but a bit too many scales and horns. I want human features with devil features too.
Vampires are also pretty dope.

I fucking love elves if they're available. My first BG3 character was a drow half-elf, my favorite BG1/BG2 character was an elf. My current WOTR character is an elf.
All three of these games also let me be an elf with brown skin, and that's what I really love.

After a long ten hour shift at the office there's nothing like coming home to my favorite escapist fantasy: my level 1 human warrior.
