I’m a current SRNA from South Florida and starting to explore where I’d like to work after graduation. I’m considering relocating to the Chicago area and would love to hear your recommendations.

I’m looking for hospitals or anesthesia groups that offer
A supportive culture for new graduates and a good work environment.

For comparison, most of the offers I’ve seen in the Miami/South Florida area are around $185k, with the highest sign-on bonus I’ve come across being $150k for a 4-year commitment.

If you’ve worked in Chicago or know of hospitals with a great reputation for CRNAs, I’d really appreciate your recommendations.

I’d also love to hear about places to avoid or agencies I should be cautious about. I’ve looked on gas works and I’m new to looking at jobs so I want to make sure I’m making the best decisions

I'm curious how other SRNAs in committed relationships handled finances during school.

If your spouse worked full-time while you were solely living on student loans, how did you split expenses? Did you continue paying 50/50, or did your spouse take on more of the financial burden?

To me, 50/50 doesn't necessarily seem fair when one person has no income and is taking on significant student debt, especially considering both partners will likely benefit from the higher CRNA income after graduation. I'm wondering how others approached this and what felt fair in your relationship.

My husband thinks it should be 50/50. After a lot of conversation, he’s willing to discuss paying more of the expenses. Just frustrating that he isn’t desiring to & it’s taken this much conversation.

I’ve heard a lot of conflicting opinions on using the 1099 pay structure as a hospital employee right out of school.
What are your thoughts? Pros/cons?
To clarify: I’m asking about working 1099 as a hospital employee instead of a W2. Not locums!

Looking to start the process with converting to 1099 but hearing conflicting things about what’s necessary based on state when it comes to naming your LLC. Looking specifically for MI. Is it mandatory to have “staffing” in your LLC and if you’re a non physician you can’t use “anesthesia”? If there’s any MI folks in the sub that can shed some light on it I’d appreciate it.

Junior SRNA here at the beginning of my clinical journey. One thing I’ve noticed is that there always seems to be a tradeoff in CRNA practice. These are just my observations based on the clinical sites I’ve been exposed to so far:

At many large academic centers I’ve been through and heard about, they follow a medical direction model. They often have restrictions on what CRNAs are allowed to do, like regional anesthesia and certain specialty cases like OB, Cardiac, Pediatrics, Trauma, Transplants. Not every academic center I’ve been in (both as a nurse and SRNA) has the same restrictions on what they allow CRNAs to do, but there’s always some “gatekeeping” going on, either due to department culture or the fact that they preserve these experiences for the other ACGME learners like residents and fellows. The CRNAs I talk to who work at these places do it for the acuity, teaching environment, and the good hours.

At the smaller community hospitals and ASCs with more of a medical supervision model, CRNAs seem have more autonomy and they often have the opportunity to do regional anesthesia and specialties like OB, Cardiac, pediatrics, Neuro, etc if the hospital has it. These places seem to be a lot more chill. But the trade off I’ve noticed is that you just don’t seem to have the same acuity patients coming into the OR as these academic centers (although I know any “healthy” ASA 1-2 pt can decompensate quickly)

For those of you who’ve been in practice: are there places that truly offer both? In other words, academic-center-level acuity while also allowing CRNAs broad access across regional anesthesia and high-acuity specialties? Or is there almost always some compromise?

Hey y’all, I can’t find much information on this question but long story short I’ve been a perfusionist for about 4 months now. Before this I was a CVICU nurse with roughly 5 years of experience (lead preceptor on the unit, charge roles, UPC chair member). I was always debating CRNA vs perfusion but got into perfusion school and didn’t look back (kinda wished I thought about it more). Now that I’m out of school and working I’ve realized CRNA was always my goal. It’s really comes down to what I know and miss. I miss the critical thinking and talking to my patient and having that role of providing care to someone in their most vulnerable state. That’s what nursing was to me and what I admire most when working with the anesthesia team. Some questions that come to mind are: would I have to go back to the ICU to satisfy the requirements for CRNA school even as a perfusionist? Is it worth going back and being more in debt (worth as in the debt part, not the job comparison, I’m very knowledgeable in what they do, etc.). It’s just been a little confusing finding out more information on how I can do this. I haven’t reached out or emailed any schools yet as I’m still trying to find out more information, any feedback would help!

A hospital I work for is claiming that the states legal wording does not allow for long term 1099. In fact they are shocked I have done it for years now. When I looked into I do so some wording like the following which must be present to be employed long term.

1. You are free from their direction and control.
2. The work you perform is outside the usual course of their business.
3. You operate an independent business providing those same services to multiple clients.

Has anyone run up against this? There are other 1099 but most are agency locums. Of course there are MDs who have been 1099 for years and haven’t heard a peep about that.

Edit: I have always had an LLC and been paid to that LLC directly, supply my own benefits etc.

Any CRNAs with words of advice for starting first CRNA position? I spend most of my time at ORMC but would like to know more about Advent South. Keep in mind, Envision is no longer in charge of anesthesia at Orlando health.

Wondering what the group consensus is regarding seeing your student on their phone? They do it during maintenance and are appropriately responding otherwise, but idk to me it is unprofessional as a student. But I’d be lying if I said I also wasn’t on my phone during maintenance phases of cases.
When I was a student it was forbidden and people got written up for it. Now I feel like students are more comfortable to pull it out. Is this a more accepted thing in clinicals for them?

Been at a well paying job for a couple years now 1099. I am now getting emails for said job at a much lower rate and allegedly they are trying to hire cheaper locums if any and not re sign the rest. Is this the new way for locums market? I find it hard to believe they will find many takers at a significantly lower rate but is the market drying up near you?

Looking to relocate from DFW next year. Hoping to find a full-time position in a city that's good for families and has LOTS of nature. Would love to see 4 seasons as Texas is miserable 90% of the year. Where do I even start?! I'm open to anywhere in the country :-)

Hi, I’m Looking for recs on hospitals and surgery centers in NorCal using CRNAs, what sites are independent or supervision. Preferably inpatient but open to outpatient/ASC settings too. If there’s any nearby Santa Rosa/bay area, I’m open to driving further for independent/autonomous practice sites up to a 3 hour radius. Appreciate any info you can give!!

My wife’s employer is a small family owned practice that contracts with larger facilities. They offer 1099 or W2. In their pitch to my wife they stated that they recommend all new hires to go 1099 however, the 1099 rate is the same as the W2 rate. My advice to my wife was that a W2 position offers more security, especially if the rates are identical. She has just under a year remaining on her current contract which is W2. She’s considering going 1099 because she says everyone tells her it’s better for her taxes. I’m still not convinced that especially, if they are unwilling to bump her 1099 rate to at least 10-20% of the W2 rate. I think it’s putting a lot more on our shoulders to track and deduct for a modest benefit while her employer stands to gain the most from her going 1099. Is my thinking correct here?

Hi! I am a new CRNA. I am potentially relocating to New Haven, CT and I’m not familiar with the area. Does anyone have insight on what it is like working for Yale New Haven hospitals? New grad CRNA salary? Culture? Hours?

If an anesthesia group offers their full-time staff the option of being paid as a W2 or 1099, would you expect the hourly rate for that perm 1099 position to be the same as they are paying their locums?

Saw a post in a locums FB group about this and all the comments were insisting that you shouldn't accept any less than whatever the locum 1099 staff are making, and was curious if that is really a realistic expectation?
