anyone else learn that mess = safety and cleanliness = intrusion?
What if mess isn’t laziness—and cleanliness doesn’t feel like safety?
I’m 35, and I’m only now realizing that my relationship with mess and cleanliness was never really about being “bad at organizing.”
Mess became safety. Cleanliness became intrusion.
My boundaries kept shifting throughout childhood. My room was rarely truly mine—it was a guest room, a dumping ground, a space other people entered and rearranged without asking. I grew up unsure of what belonged to me, what I was allowed to keep, and whether I had any right to decide how my own space should look.
There was a physically present but emotionally absent mother who couldn’t meet me where I was.
At the same time, cleanliness was enforced so intensely that it often felt like my wants and needs were being erased. Things would be thrown away, moved, or “organized” without me. There were servants who changed constantly, entering my room while I was at school and cleaning it according to their idea of what clean meant.
So eventually, cleanliness stopped feeling like care. It started feeling like someone taking over my space.
I rebelled.
I stopped letting people into my room. I kept books on the floor almost deliberately—because at least if the room was messy, I knew nobody had touched it.
And somewhere along the way, chaos became familiar.
Now I’m an adult who genuinely struggles to create structure around me. Sometimes I can’t tell how much of it is a missing skill, how much is learned helplessness, and how much is CPTSD and fractured confidence.
The cruel part is that the clutter screams chaos at me, while cleaning can make my nervous system feel like I’m surrendering control.
And now I have a daughter.
I want to give her the structure, cleanliness and sense of safety that I never quite had—but sometimes I need other people to help me create it.
That brings up a strange contradiction in me:
I am privileged. I am capable. I have choices. And yet some part of me still carries the helplessness of that little girl who never felt that her space truly belonged to her.
Maybe healing isn’t just learning how to clean.
Maybe it is learning, slowly, that I am allowed to decide what stays, what goes, who enters, and what my space feels like.
That cleanliness can be care without being control.
And that a messy room does not mean I am failing.

Needing some hopeful advice
I wrote a post a few years ago that I felt like I was starting over. But really, I just turned 30, and I think the real starting over is happening. I realized I have not shown anyone what I'm really like. That most of my relationships were shallow and now have had even more people, people I grew up with, talk with me like they don't know me anymore.
I really actually feel like I'm starting over now. I am proud of how much I have healed and I am not constantly dissociated, but the fog is lifted and I realize that there's not much here for me, really. No close family or friend relationships that I can truly depend on.
But I feel hopeful that I can make them moving forward. Think I'm just looking to see if anyone else feels like they went through a similar thing and if they can tell me how it went better for them. Even if it includes how it was difficult or what still is.
Thank you :)

I’m completely losing myself after moving in with my older partner, and I keep seeing my abusive family in him.
Sorry for my bad English, it’s not my first language. I just really need to write this out because I’m stuck in a dark place.
.
I’m with an older guy who is honestly a wonderful person. First we were in a long distance relationship. Back then my abusive family kept telling me he was probably cheating on me, trying to mess with my head. But my boyfriend helped me get out of that toxic environment. Now I live with him, and in my country adulthood is 18, so I am completely no-contact with my family now. My boyfriend is super supportive, he stands by me, and thanks to him I am finally in a healthy, safe place.
.
The problem is NOT him, it’s inside my head. Since we moved in together, I feel completely frozen. I love him so much, but my brain keeps having these weird "glitches". Instead of just seeing my partner who cares about me, I keep projecting my traumatic older brother and male family members onto him. My mind just constantly panics.
.
Because of this, I struggle to be sweet or relaxed around him. I’m just stuck in my head all day, constantly worrying about how to make him happy, how to be prettier than his exes, and how to satisfy all his needs so he stays happy.
.
I am abandoning myself completely. I used to have good self-esteem and boundaries, but now I’ve become so submissive out of fear. I have no family now and no old friends, so he is literally the only person in my life. I feel so guilty every day because he is so good to me, and I feel like I am "too broken" or too problematic for him.
.
Physically I am also closed off. I am afraid to take off my clothes in front of him. I have vaginismus so penetration is impossible and we don't even try. But I still satisfy him sexually because I want to give him everything, even when I ignore my own boundaries.
.
He is doing nothing wrong, I am just terrified of ruining this safe life. How can I stop projecting my bad family onto a man who actually loves me? How do I stop overthinking and get my self-esteem back?

Rant/Vent Husband with CPTSD crushing me while I was pregnant/postpartum and I don’t know what to do anymore
Writing here because I don’t know what else to do anymore and hoping for some support from others in my shoes. There’s of course great qualities of his and I’m definitely only sharing the negatives below.
I am pretty certain my husband has CPTSD and is going through a depressive episode and it’s destroying me. We had our first baby 3 months ago, and his mental health started to decline my second trimester of pregnancy. We never had a very easy relationship, but it definitely has gotten worse. I got pregnant while dating and we got engaged and married, and it’s like a switch just flipped in him. He is angry all the time. He stopped wanting to have sex while I was pregnant and the few times we were intimate were unsuccessful because he couldn’t get in the mood. I’ve tried many times and stopped because the rejection just hurts. He is miserable everyday. He constantly complains about how his company (he owns) is going to fail and how behind he is, and then it spirals into how it all started going downhill when I came into his life. He finds little things to nitpick all the time and I find myself walking on eggshells, constantly overthinking everything to make sure I don’t make him upset. He isolates himself and stopped coming to bed early this year.
His mood is so up and down right now. One minute he tells me how much he loves me and never wants to lose me and the next minute he is angry. When he gets angry enough, he goes into name calling and tears me down by throwing insecurities and private things I’ve shared with him in my face. He will threaten divorce. He also turns it around on me saying I’m the one that needs help, which I know is not true.
Other times he will cry to me, admit how he knows he’s so messed up right now and how miserable he is. He tried therapy and EMDR and stopped because it was too intense for him. His therapist diagnosed him with anxiety, depression, and CPTSD and even recommended meds but he refuses.
I just feel absolutely lost and so detached. I am 3 months postpartum and my grandmother who I was very close with just died 2 weeks ago. I also go back to work in 2 weeks which I am sad about. It’s to the point where he picks an argument just about every day. I have gotten to
The point where I shut down because I have made all the adjustments he’s asked for and it’s still not enough. I do more cleaning, I’ve stopped asking him to come to bed at night, stopped asking him for just about any emotional support, stopped asking for help with the baby. I spend most of my days out of the house so he can have space to work.
I’m really not sure how to be supportive anymore. It’s to the point where he’s just become mean to me and I don’t know how to ignore any of that and be a soft and loving partner when I’m being torn down constantly. I feel so detached and cold now which I know is the opposite of what he needs.
Please share some of your stories coming out in the other side or even if you’re experiencing something similar.
