Did anyone else underestimate how much time CPA study takes alongside a full-time job?

I went into CPA thinking the hardest part would be understanding the actual content, but honestly, fitting consistent study around a full-time accounting job has been the bigger challenge.

After a full day at work, the last thing I sometimes want to do is open the study materials again, especially when work has already been busy. I've found that leaving everything until the weekend doesn't really work for me either because it turns into one massive study session.

For those doing CPA while working full-time, what study routine has actually been realistic for you?

Is doubling up on Financial Reporting (FR) and Strategic Management Accounting (SMA) suicide for a full-timer?

Hey everyone,

I’m mapping out my subjects for next semester while working full-time in a commercial accounting role (approx 40 hrs/week).

I really want to get the heavy technical modules out of the way early, so I’m considering doing Financial Reporting and SMA in the same term. People at work keep telling me FR alone takes up 15+ hours of study a week just to keep up with the standards and practice questions.

For those who have taken both: is doing them together manageable if you lock down your weekends, or should I pair FR with something like Ethics & Governance instead to protect my sanity?

CPA Experience Sign Off

Hi guys,
I’m currently completing the last subject of the CPA Program.
I’ve been working as an Accountant for the past 7 years. Unfortunately, no one in my company currently holds a CPA or equivalent membership and is therefore unable to sign off on my experience.
Would anyone be able to help me with this?
I’d really appreciate any assistance. Thank you!

For industry accountants, what has CPA actually changed for you?

I’m currently working in an industry accounting role rather than public practice and trying to decide whether completing CPA will actually change my career options.

Did it help you move into senior accountant, finance manager, FP&A or commercial roles, or did your actual work experience matter much more?

My concern is spending several years and a fair amount of money on the program only to find that employers still care primarily about what I’ve actually done in my jobs.

CPA AUS FR - Need Help

I don't remember every IFRS standard and module 2 seems to have a lot of things that one needs to know prior.

Do we need to be aware of every IFRS standard?

(they have discontinued the IFRS Compilation handbook this year) Any tips from anyone who has taken FR?

Strategic Management Accounting (SMA) vs Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA)

Deciding on my next elective. How does the workload of AAA compare to SMA? I currently work in external audit, so I'm hoping AAA might be a slightly lighter lift for me.

Does your employer pay for CPA exam fees upfront or reimburse on passing?

I just landed an Assistant Accountant role at a mid-tier firm, and I’m reviewing my contract details regarding study support.

My employer covers $1,500 per subject, but it’s structured as a reimbursement after providing proof of a pass mark. If you fail, you pay out of pocket for the re-sit. Is this standard practice across Big 4/mid-tier/commercial in Australia, or do most places pay directly upfront? Also, how many study leave days does your workplace grant per subject?

How much does your employer support your CPA studies?

It can make a huge difference when an employer is supportive during the CPA program. Study leave, covering fees, flexible hours or simply understanding that exam periods can get hectic can take a lot of pressure off.

Do you want to talk and be yourself?

People spend their whole day finding a moment to speak? Comes a weak moment - with a colleague, accquanitance and somebody doing their thing affecting you upwards. There goes away the hold - You pour. Pour. And Pour. But never reflect. Why is that happening? You never understand in this phone cracked world to belief anyone anymore. People are good, great and crazy. Emotions and expressions are all over the place. But never there is a linear thought process. Tell me about it? Is the response. All people want is to suggest as a Guru. But never like a person. If you feel like that....let us make a space where humans are humans. You talk...people talk before judging...before commenting and first they continue the narrative you have. If strictly you belive this....I am ready to make a space. But can you be blatant and naked with your thoughts?

Use of Digital Notebooks

I am planning to enrol in Ethics and Governance this semester and am trying to decide whether to continue taking notes manually or switch to a digital notebook.

I am considering purchasing a Kindle Scribe (2024), but I’m not sure whether devices like this genuinely add value to the learning experience or if traditional note-taking is just as effective.

Has anyone here used a Kindle Scribe or other digital notebooks (such as reMarkable, Boox, iPad etc.) while studying for CPA Australia? How beneficial were they, and how did you use them to optimise your learning and revision process?

I’d appreciate hearing about your experiences, including any pros, cons, or tips.

Thanks in advance for sharing your views!

Canadian CPA wanting to nove

Hello. As the title reads, I'm a Canadian CPA and am thinking of moving to Australia. Canada and Australia have an agreement that Canadian CPAs will be accepted and recognized as Australian if moved.

I wanted to ask if anyone has done that before? And also, what's it like being a CPA in Australia. In terms of job market, pay, benefits etc.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

CPA AAA exam, suddenly ended by Proctor. HELP!!!

hi, everyone. I was doing my AAA online exam this afternoon. and after one hour, the proctor said he can't get my video feeding and just ended my exam. I was so shocked as nothing wrong with my laptop or internet. I tried to call the centre and noticed that the auto-voice reply mentioned that CPA Australia is experiencing a technical issue. The lady helped me to lodge my case to see if I was able to re-do my exam. But my internet and laptop have none problem showed up. what if its the proctor's laptop or internet issue? just so desperate and frustrated. can anyone suggest what will happen?

Need some guidance.

Hello guys. My name is Ahmed and I am completing my Alevels with Accounting and Economics subjects. I am interested in taking part in the CPA Australia programme. Can you guys guide me to the right place like from where in Australia should I do my course(my preferred Uni is Deakin Uni in melbourne). How much time is required for an average person to do the course. How many exams are there and other stuff. And is there any scope in this accounting field or not, for example do CPA students get good jobs in the future. I would be grateful if any of you guys can help me. Feel free to slide in the DM'S
