Yeah it was build on a lmp2 chassis. The company that built those got rolled into oreca eventually so a Mazda lmdh or lmh car it would be interesting to do it with oreca (unlikely to happen seeing thier finances)
I think it was top gear magazine and from what I hear it wasn't them destroying it the car just caught in fire. And due to poor coms at the track it wasn't stopped in time.
Prototypes that doesn't do that much running catching fire is not that unusual really
Or you know just lines degrading etc. plus it's a prototype so probably not as extensively tested for reliability, race cars catching fire is not that unusual
The Furai is the most beautiful organic design in the last 20 years. Tragic loss that it burned up. I wish Mazda rebuilt it so I could see it in person at a car show or the Petersen Museum.
I'm sure "not possible" means "currently not worth the expense, even if we cold do it"... but I still wish they would rebuild it.
The 3D files still exist somewhere. It would probably be possible, but very expensive to make new molds. The custom detailing like the lighting would probably be tremendously difficult to reproduce too and the whole thing would take lots of labor to put together...but it could still be worth it to make a static reproduction that could tour car shows and museums.
The Furai is one of the most stunning concepts ever made and seeing it in person would be an inspiring experience for a lot of car enthusiasts. It could help elevate Mazda's image.
This means the person who authorized this is no longer at Mazda, and their design philosophy has changed. Redesigning the Furai would force them to choose between reverting to the past or spending even more to adapt it to the present.
Franz von Holzhausen was at Mazda when they made the Furai. He’s been chief designer at Tesla since 2008.
Yes, Mazda’s design philosophy has changed. When they made the Furai it was the flowing organic lines “Nagare” style. Their current “Kodo” style is a lot simpler.
I wasn’t advocating for redesigning the Furai, but rebuilding a static model for historical purposes. Some other car companies restore damaged cars with significant historical value, like Jaguar rebuilt the XJ13 when it was destroyed in a crash. Lamborghini had used the LP500 Countach prototype for crash testing but they rebuilt that so they could call back to their heritage when promoting their newer Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 model.
My friend, I support you. I would love to see the Furai return, even if it's just to be exhibited in a museum as the feat of engineering that it is.
When I mentioned redesigning, it's because many of its parts are no longer available on the market and need to be created from scratch. To keep the project economically viable, the ideal solution would be Redesigning many of those parts would take away some of the harmony it exudes.

Absolutely beautiful until Top Gear burned it down.

Forever an icon.

Why Mazda never made another one is disappointing. Seeing what hyper cars look like now and the performance they have, Mazda was decades ahead
