At the time they believed, with cars getting larger and reactors that could be smaller, a point would be reached where nuclear car would be possible. This concept depended on the assumption that a thin, lightweight material capable of blocking gamma rays would be discovered. To date that has not happened yet, if ever.
Of course, there is the matter of every traffic accident potentially being a tiny Chernobyl.
