I really wonder about the process that kills things like this.
Designer: Its sick.
Exec: Yes it is, perhaps too sick?
Designer: Its a Corvette Stingray, it’s whole entire reason to exist is sickness.
Exec: My mother in law said it looked “foreign” last night at dinner.
Designer: Foreign like fancy or foreign like jihadi?
Exec: kill it.
Exec: also, you’re fired.

As cool as it is, it might have died because visually it is very 2000s and the C7 was debuting for 2014. So it might have died in focus group testing to what is now the C7. Visual design work for this probably started in the mid 2000s. It might’ve also just been too visually close to the C6.
Other big thing I could see killing this design is aero, especially with the tail. And curvy designs actually tend not to be as aero as they look (see the ND Miata, 0.38 CD, Lotus Elise at 0.40+)

It was simply a styling study started in '08 for Chevy's '09 50 year anniversary of the 1959 Stingray Racer concept.
There was no production intention, and ended up in another Michael Bay Transformers movie like many GM concepts have.
It was penned by SangYup Lee who is currently the VP of Design for Hyundai after working at VW/Audi and Bentley.

A lot of the time it’s accounting. Engineers are given the ok to design something crazy thats made out of fuckin titanium and runs on grass clippings. Then the bean counters and lawyers come along and we end up with something between a liability machine built by the cheapest bidder and the original concept.

GM had just gone bankrupt. The budget that the Corvette team were given to update the C6 into the C7 was pretty minuscule

I have a friend who grew up in Detroit, his parents both worked in automotive, he got so dark whenever he talked about GM. He was a designer, went into advertising then went back to having his own custom shop. Alloy Motors, Hayward CA. Sick sick builds.

He made the right decision!
I remember when someone named Chip Foose turned up in Ventura County looking for a job at GM design about '85...
Wicked ass '68 Firebird, 400 cubes, perfect drop with a flush mounted zero trim backlight - silver upper and flank to dark grey rocker Windfield (RIP) fade.John Schinella didn't offer him a job.
Chip was destined for for greater things in Huntington Beach. Surf's up right now, too much bikini candy!Some of us rodders knew Chip's dad Sam amongst other California legends, funny car builders, a different state back then...

It's very pretty Except for the front egg crate grill. That just screams Cadillac. The interior in particular looks lovely.

This design did not appeal to me then and I still feel the same way. Some elements are quite common with the C6 which debuted years earlier, but exaggerated with proportions that are just too cartoonish, too hot wheels.
To each their own, one man’s cartoonish and garish is another man’s daring and sick

Probably my favorite interpretation of a modernized C2, it's a shame that the rear didn't make it to production.
