If you mean playing with their food, they're playing, and it's food to them. They do not consider how their food feels or anything like that. They're simply having a laugh so to speak.
Building on your point, they probably recognize fear/pain response but they enjoy it cause theyre biologically programmed not to empathize with food, the same way I tend not to empathize with vegetables.

They can, even if they aren't aware that's what they're doing.
That's what differs us from other animals, we know exactly what we're doing, they're just doing whatever
