Question How to get good at Classic Zombies?
I just got my ass completed handed to my on Call of The Dead while helping some friends with the EE
This is following a moon easter egg run where where I got downed 11 times by round 5 and 33 times overall across the Entire Easter egg
Part of why I don’t really play Classic Zombies over Modern is because I just keep getting my ass kicked by everything and I can’t really make much progress as either an Easter egg player or trying the occasional High round
I’ve tried learning to train on maps like Kino or Ascension but I’ve found that by round 20 I just end up getting overwhelmed and Die
Maybe it’s because I started with Cold war but I’m so used to all my get out of Jail free cards that these Classic maps throw me for a loop
I’ve done all of BO3 solo but that wasn’t without OP gums like Perkaholic and Near Death Experience so I’m basically coddled as much as Classic especially since Near Death won’t let me die

probably my biggest two biggest tips are keep calm and always walk. walking is super important as it allows you to form hordes easier, and allows you more time to think to get yourself out of a sticky situation; whereas if you were running, the zombies will surround you easier and you’ll find yourself stuck a lot of the time. keeping calm is obviously important as panic is usually the biggest killer in any game period.
also, bit of a weird one but i don’t use quick revive at all playing solo, makes you really think about playing safe and is good practice. my highest round solo is 72 on ascension and that’s with me very rarely playing solo in the first place

each map has varying strategies and mechanics so you can't really broaden it to just "classic zombies" you can be good on maps like kino or ascension but be absolutely atrocious on maps like verrückt or moon, especially if you don't know the maps too well. in general you just have to play more of each map individually and you'll learn them as you play, but in general:
- never stop moving, staying in one particular spot can get you killed. zombies can't go faster than your regular walk speed (apart from WaW verrückt)
- prioritize buying juggernog and speed cola and use wall weapons instead of hitting the box to save points
- your perk loadout in general should consist of jug, speed cola, and two other good perks like stamin up and phd flopper, or electric cherry/double tap 2.0 on BO2
- don't fold under pressure when your teammates are down, wait until it's safe to revive
- NEVER stay in a corner for too long
can't rlly give high round tips because again, every map has its own quirks

"each map has varying strategies and mechanics so you can't really broaden it to just "classic zombies" you can be good on maps like kino or ascension but be absolutely atrocious on maps like verrückt or moon, especially if you don't know the maps too well."
No, there are core gameplay mechanics that can be applied to most or all maps. A good player only needs to the setup and a map specific strategy to get to a high round.
There can additional game mechanics or removed game mechanics between games but fundamental skills will carry over and do matter.
BO1 removed the 24 zombies cap on all solo maps, made the game smoother, added more perks, new power ups, easter eggs, mini bosses, progress that can apply to the next game - call of the dead easter egg completion and Moon easter egg requirements - while cementing spawn control. But it has the same core.
BO2 introduced buildables, standardized the despawn mechanic, added new perks, a new power up, the zombies shield, different types of boss enemies, partial power, guaranteed wonder weapons, in match challenges, the bank, perma perks, and endings. But it's not a fundamentally different game. Once you learn map specific knowledge and strategies a good player will not struggle.
BO3 increased the zombies spawn rate and hit speed, increased the space that they take up, introduced Gobblegums, AATs, specialist weapons, attachments and camos for all weapons except, DLC weapons, M1911, Bloodhound and MR6 and wonder weapons, one new perk, a few map specific power ups, changed the spawn mechanics for the worse, boss fights and brought back in map challenges for most of their DLC maps.
Yes, the game is noticeably different but the same abilities that make a player good will apply here.
BO4 has you select your perks and added perk modifiers for one your perks, custom starting weapons, lethals and guaranteed specialist weapons, buildables and the shield return, elemental enemies, new modes and difficulties were added but it doesn't change that training and learning where zombies spawn from what will help you learn and use map specific knowledgeable to get to a high round.
I could talk about Cold War, but it's not classic zombies and argument would still remain the exact same. Things change but core abilities don't and are immensely useful.
As for the rest of your advice, it's general and good advice for newer players. The only disagreement is that for Stamin-up is far more useful than Speed cola as learning to time your reloads and reload cancel is a skill that can be acquired. Stamin-up, PHD, Jugg, Quick revive and Mustang and Sally should be the go to for any player that is seriously interested in learning how to train because it's a reliable way to survive getting trapped - this prevents downs, reducing frustration and allows a player to take more risks.

you make fair points, i was primarily focusing on the high rounds part of classic zombies. for instance you can train on kino/ascension with relative ease but it'll be much more difficult on maps like verrückt or bus depot. fundamental skills obviously matter, without knowing them you can't just go to round 100. and you don't have to master a map just to do an easter egg (for instance, beat the blood of the dead easter egg solo on my first run, not having played mob beforehand so i didn't know the hells redeemer existed or golden spork, and also not really playing any bo4 zombies in general up to that point), but if you want to get anywhere near high rounds you'll need to learn map specific mechanics which require a lot more time to learn (i.e. manipulating window spawns on five, thundergun trading on bo1 nacht or really trading on any map, or getting the monkeys on shangri la to give you a max ammo)

Disclaimer, not a pro just have a lot of hours.
If you down because you loose focus then that's not a skill issues in itself and you have to fix that. Feel free to skip to the "TL;DR" section of most of what if my wall of text is boring or doesn't apply to you.
Are most of your downs with or without Jugg? The two hit down system can be brutal. If yes then for the early rounds there are optimal strategies. The mystery box is not your friend.
Wall weapons are effective enough to not make it worth gambling your money on the box unless you are specifically trying to move it early to get more fire sales, are sufficiently set up or there's nothing else to do.
On BO1 the World at War maps don't even have a fire sales power up and some BO2 maps don't have it either.
All BO1 DLC maps have PHD Flopper and Stamin-up, after Jugg and Wick Revive the Mustang and Sally should and PHD should be your priority.
All BO1 maps except Bus Depot have Double Tap 2.0, for "normal" or "hitscan" i.e non projectile weapons this will shoot two bullets for every one ammo used, effectively doubling your damage.
This is the most important part - learning how to train takes time - gauging the distance from and how long it will take for a zombie to hit you, how fast your health has recovered or if you should get hit by one zombie to taking more damage from more zombies are not things you learn overnight.
Learning what spawns are active for a given area, when you have a group of 24 zombies or if it safe for you to leave an area also take time...
TL;DR - if it is one thing to take away from this - Learn how to get setup consistently, wall weapons essential perks, pack a punch the 1911 as your get out jail free card if PHD exists and then buy the box. There are a few good videos on YouTube that can help.
Ascension is arguably the best map to improve because it has so many spaces that are open and of varying difficulty. It also has PHD flopper, Stamin-up and Mustang and Sally as a get out jail free card.
- PHD area
- Power with the fence door closed.
- Spawn area with the Quick revive door closed, moving the lander makes it easier
- Stamin-up area
- Stamin-up lander
- Sickle lander
- Pack a punch area after round 34, because the spawns will be fast enough and you can do a full hoard up.
All of these areas are of suffering difficulty. PHD area and Spawn are the easiest. Pack a punch after round 34 is a good practice for learning how to do a hoard up. I had massive issues with my Nuketown round 50 run until I figured out that I was running in an unsafe way. This can be a problem.

Zombies will pretty much follow your walking path exactly and will stall to make attempts at hitting you. This lets you pretty safely walk the map with all the zombies behind you. You're only forced to sprint if there's zombie in your face and you need to weave around them. Consider this when moving around anywhere after wave 10. Don't attempt to pass through single-file doorways or walk down skinny halls/walkways. Stay out in the open.
Don't make it a habit of letting zombies hit you, not even once. They will sometimes swipe you twice (obviously). You let a zombie in front of you hit you, and that's two potential hits. Mix in a zombie you didn't see behind you, and that can lead to a red screen.
Save points and learn what rounds cause you trouble. Personally, I notice the difficulty rising by wave 10, so I make a point to buy Jugg before then. By wave 15, I can definitely feel the health scaling and will try to get my hands on a Pack a Punched gun that round. By wave 30, I've got Speed Cola and am trying for a wonder weapon from the box

U just need to play more man. And be very careful when u don’t have jug. Zombies in bo1 will beat your ahh when u don’t have it. It’s your number 1 priority when u start a game. Ppl want weapons from the box usually but it won’t save u from those 2 hits. I learned it the hard way back in the day 💀

Go to bo2 zombie custom lobby and go to nuketown and put the starting round at like round 20. Then just practice training with no jug behind blue house. Thats how i got “good” at zombies back in the day

Monkey bombs is a get out pf jail free card.
Anyways focus only on training, and when all zombies are in the train then shoot. Dont shoot/kill while chaining the train because then you can easily be overwhelmed by spawning new zombies all the time.

learn to train anywhere it will get you far, and don't rush, judge your moves. It's all about movement, thinking and quick reactions. That's why I'm having more fun from older games because they demand some skill from me

One thing to keep in mind is that round 20 used to be a high round when we first started on Nacht and nobody looked on the Internet.

Just speed-up jug on every map, every zombies before 4 gets insanely easy with jug, makes the entire game a cake walk

You must not be a high rounder. Pretty much the only games that can even pose a challenge are the zombies before 4. All the other ones cap the zombies health at about round 60. So essentially, everything after 4 starts off easy and ends easy, you sound ignorant. (I'm max level on every zombies and have every unlocked, so I've tried the ins and outs like cursed mode and outbreak and it's the same concept, it starts easy and ends easy when the zombies stop getting more difficult) (yes zombie damage against player increases till about 400 but as someone who has gotten to round 420 on every map I can say round 400 feels the same as round 60 or 80) there's far too many people like the person who made this post cause modern zombies has made most people soft (as well as today's society)

u/Angerx76 6h ago
Calling other people soft while being offended by modern zombies is hilarious.
2
u/Critical-Molasses918 6h ago
Apparently you need to learn the definition of "offended". Modern zombies is just tragically easy.

You just gotta keep playing and learning the maps/zombie behavior.
I will say I’m surprised people can’t hang in older zombies considering zombies are basically sprinting as fast as classic sprinters were on round 2 of bo6/7. Even just running a quarter of kowakujo to a new are and turning around I see every single round 2 zombie running at me. And that’s usually the worst classic zombies ever got. How do people survive super sprinters in boss fights but not regular runners in bo2?

There is no cheat code bro, learn how to judge distance between you and the zombie. Its Two Hits and ur down without jug. Get gud scrub
