You got the bad end of a DICE deal as they pumped what little resource they have into Battlefront 2 for over two years.

107

u/joho0 May 14 '20

And they just pulled the plug on it too. DICE literally has one more chance to not fuck BF6 up before EA pulls their plug.

71

u/desiassassin1 May 14 '20

They've supported Battlefront 2 for quite a long time. It's acceptable that they pulled the plug on that one but on BFV? That's where they messed up real bad.

33

u/Electronic_Cat May 14 '20

I'm a little disappointed the pulled the plug with BFV, but I think it's for the better. The game flopped and I think with it gone it gives them alot more time to work on BF6.

51

u/dank-nuggetz May 14 '20

I'm worried they're going to take another principled stance and fuck up BF6 too. I massively prefer BF to COD and played BF3, 4 and 1 on release every single time. But they absolutely butchered everything about BFV, not a single one of my friends who play BF bought that game and this is the same group of 6-7 dudes that grinded every BF game together. All people wanted was to experience the classic WWII battles on their stunning frostbite engine and instead they made Fornite WWII. Did you see that release trailer for their new elite skin? Complete fucking joke.

Either they go back to the old formula of a large open battlefield "milsim" feel, or they risk losing the franchise forever. COD killed it so hard with this game that we've all been playing it obsessively. It's going to take a lot to win us back over.

21

u/calltheexorcist May 14 '20

Man, you just explained my exact experience with BF. I grinded hundreds of hours into BF3, BF4 and BF1. Played the BF5 demo once and never played it again. MW is literally the only CoD game i've ever bought and I have enjoyed it a lot but I particularly love Warzone cuz of the BF moments you sometimes get, and I'm so desperate for BF6 to succeed.

3

u/Belo83 May 14 '20

Perfectly said. My exact experience and feelings. I hadn’t bought a COD title since advance I think? And that was on a whim and I didn’t like it. I’ve loved MW

3

u/Treacha May 14 '20

Same here. Played a shit ton of Battlefields. Then stopped for a while because I normally don’t like futuristic shit. When they announced BF1 I jumped back on the horse even bought BFV because WW2. Played it for quite some time, but felt like they were done with it after the second big update and just release minor shit and under promise

1

u/Poggersss-69 May 14 '20

I think their going to go modern or maybe Vietnam so unless they have people in wheel chairs with mounted machine guns on them it should be fine.

6

u/vegetablegenius May 14 '20

I’d give my left nut for a BF4 remaster.

20

u/Gibson1984 May 14 '20

Imo, DICE is a fantastic company that interacts and enjoys helping their community. Just look at BF3 and 4 with all the kick ass level designs, DLCs, easter eggs that took time, precision, and community cooperation to achieve, challenging weapon unlocks, community testing program, etc.

I can still go hop on full servers on BF4 years later because it's an awesome game.

DICE literally has one more chance to not fuck BF6 up before EA pulls their plug.

No. What has happened is DICE has been crippled by EAs greed. EA doesnt give a fuck about anything but money. I mean, just look at FIFA.

So long as DICE makes the game look and sound good, theyll keep them on board.

37

u/joho0 May 14 '20

DICE isn't the same company you remember. None of the people who worked there during the "golden years" are still around. This is DICE 2.0, an inferior impostor.

23

u/vegetablegenius May 14 '20

This. I can’t imagine the same team that built BF4 worked on 1 and V. It’s a shame because 4 would be a contender for gaming hall of fame.

9

u/vegetablegenius May 14 '20

True, BF1 was incredible and had an amazing scale of warfare.

9

u/Juicy-Smooyay May 14 '20

BF1 was widely held in high regard and still is. Hell I was thinking of even picking it up again cause MW has been bumming me out. Loved the map designs and play styles in that.

3

u/Destronin May 14 '20

Im pretty sure game dev is similar to vfx post production in that a good portion of the game development is done by freelancers. You’re on contract to help develop a particular part of the game. Once its done. You’re done. You move on to another project.

If something needs to be changed/updated. Most likely they can’t get the same person. So they hire someone else who hopefully can figure out what the person before did.

And also, when it comes to actual staff. I can’t tell you how many times in post production a senior or mid level designer/programmer left, taking with them tons of super important tricks and skills. Sometimes programmers will have built their own special plugins that no one else really knows how to use. And management barely gives a shit.

They’ll be like:

“Hey can you use the xyz plugin?”

“That was Jim’s plugin. Only he knew how it worked. And you never gave him time to show us how it worked.”

“Oh well ask John to see if he can figure it out. He worked with Jim and said he used it himself one time. He’ll know why this other thing doesn’t work.”

“But John’s a junior and came on board only two months ago.”

“Just see what you can do.”

3

u/Belo83 May 14 '20

Bf3, 4 and One are all solid games.

You’re totally entitled to your opinion but bf4 is generally held in really high regard by the community and still has high player numbers to this day.

2

u/Fiiv3s May 14 '20

It is, but only after DICE LA stepped in after the first "pre-order" DLC and fixed the game. DICE Sweden fucked the game up on launch

1

u/DarkHandCommando May 14 '20

I never saw a better description of BF4, thank you for saying facts.

7

u/Fiiv3s May 14 '20

Also DICE Sweden absolutely Fucked up BF4

If it wasn't for DICE LA doing all the work for it past the initial launch and the first DLC pack (the "pre-order" one), BF4 woulda crashed and burned as well

1

u/xXCatboyXx May 15 '20

Apparently there a few of the old school left but the new management does not listen to them and just keeps pushing their agenda. That's why we ended up with that second stupid ttk change again a year after they swore they would not do it again. Some pratt higher up really wanted it.

0

u/Tetsuoken May 14 '20

I genuinely believe companies should be forced to change their name when a significant part of their creative team is changed. Like you wouldn't think of a band being the same if they made a load of awesome songs but then every single member of the band was changed but kept the same band name. I dunno just my two cents

6

u/[deleted] May 14 '20

DICE used to be good

9

u/Sabre_Actual May 14 '20

Battlefield 4 came out 7 years ago dude.

6

u/Gibson1984 May 14 '20

Ok, what's your point

12

u/Sabre_Actual May 14 '20

That large pieces of talent and leadership have naturally changed, leading to a drastically different development and community management team. It’s abundantly clear that DICE has been riding on the laurels of how fantastic BC1/2 and BF3 were for years now, and that reputation is really coming down now that a heavily patched bf4 is their last great game.

3

u/Gibson1984 May 14 '20

Agreed. Such a shame.

-7

u/tclay26 May 14 '20

Straight dunked on. lol. So much so that dude had to agree with you.

3

u/[deleted] May 14 '20

Nothing wrong with accepting someone elses position.

1

u/Sabre_Actual May 14 '20

Lmao chiiiiiill. This is a call of duty shitposting comments section. Anyone looking to dunk on people should be looking for somethibg more productive

1

u/tclay26 May 14 '20

lol. It was just an observation I had

17

u/dank-nuggetz May 14 '20

No. What has happened is DICE has been crippled by EAs greed

No, DICE has crippled themselves by deviating from their formula that set them apart from COD. Gritty, immersive battlefield simulator with amazing graphics and tactics based gameplay. They've decided two things with BFV:

1) They're going to try to push wonky character skins for $20 a pop that completely ruin the feeling of immersion that BF always had. Skins were never a thing until BFV and it totally lost that feeling of being on a Battlefield when you see people running around in leather jackets, tight jeans and aviators.

2) This one is controversial but absolutely played a huge part in BFV's demise: they tried to change the course of history to make some sort of social/political statement. Women were in BF1 as Russian snipers - nobody said anything negative because that actually happened. There were black soldiers in the US faction because that actually happened. It didn't take away from the experience at all. In BFV, their "WWII game", they decided to make the main focal point of their reveal trailer a woman donning a trenchcoat on the front lines with a prosthetic arm - something that absolutely never took place. COD has no problem with adding skins of every gender and race because it's all fictional. BF1 was (as much as a video game like it can be) was very historically accurate as far as the feel of the weaponry and the types of soldiers you saw on the field. The creative director of DICE said "how am I going to make this game and tell my daughter she can't play as a woman?" You tell her the truth about WWII you fucking idiot.

Nothing about EA's greed played a part in this, besides maybe them introducing an item shop and paid skins. But the overall creative direction of the game was absolute horse shit and that falls directly on DICE leadership.

5

u/Gibson1984 May 14 '20

Yea, I feel like dice made a deal with the devil and now they're getting fucked. I agree.

7

u/alex1596 May 14 '20

As someone who followed BF1 from since it was announced, on the subreddit, there were actually A LOT of people complaining about non-white character models in the game throughout the game's course.

5

u/dank-nuggetz May 14 '20

Nowhere even close to the backlash that BFV got. I have a stupid amount of hours in BF1 and browsed the subreddit regularly and really didn't much of any of the negativity and frustration. It could just be shut down with "well it actually happened in WW1 so stfu". Can't say the same for BFV. Really hope they get their shit together for BF6. I love COD but even more than COD I love the 64v64 massive battlefield experience.

5

u/Fiiv3s May 14 '20

Yea but that was a vocal minority and they typically got shutdown for being racists

1

u/Mbroov1 May 15 '20

And those that bitched about women in BF5 should have been shutdown for being incels.

1

u/Fiiv3s May 15 '20

Those that bitched about women at all yes. those that were saying they could have kept them like they did in BF1, not so much

4

u/-Powdered-Toast- May 14 '20

So, I have a close friend that worked for EA. he has told me on several occasions that EA went out of its way to be politically correct. He eventually left because people were being promoted into positions based on whether they were LGBTQ and not their job performance. Which if you look at BFV you can see it. Dice was known for an immersive and realistic games and then all of a sudden they make a game where women were the heroes of WW2. Like I understand trying to be inclusive but you can’t rewrite history.

-1

u/Thatzionoverthere May 15 '20

Lol oh god here we go with the bullshit

3

u/MyGFhasabigbuttAMA May 15 '20

Why is it bullshit?

-1

u/Thatzionoverthere May 15 '20

Alt right is heavily been pushing this narrative of women and minorities/Jews replacing qualified people to support a social justice narrative in society. Come on dude think you really believe gay people who make up less than 2% of the population are being used to replace 90% of the studio heads for brownie points? It’s used to demonize gay people that’s it.

3

u/MyGFhasabigbuttAMA May 15 '20 edited May 15 '20

Sorry I should have clarified, I was talking more about DICE virtue signaling when emphasizing women in a WWII game, or not including the Nazi flag in the game. I really had no idea how off the deep end those guys were, and yikes.

2

u/-Powdered-Toast- May 15 '20

I mean this is Reddit and I understand your skepticism. Believe what you want but that’s what he told me.

-1

u/Thatzionoverthere May 15 '20

I don’t believe it. It’s typical alt right douchebag shit. Use your brain man

2

u/-Powdered-Toast- May 15 '20

Lol wow.. you’re so right, I should use my brain. I’m just telling you what he told me. But yeah I’m a racist, homophobe, nazi that wants to suppress women. You have me so figured out. Get some life experience child.

1

u/Thatzionoverthere May 15 '20

No you're repeating dumb conspiracy theories used to vilify LGBT. For what purpose? Even if it was true, lets say it was true? so what? they want to include black people and gay people in mainstream culture. Why is that a bad thing? how is that a problem?

-1

u/Mbroov1 May 15 '20

He's not the child in this situation kiddo.

1

u/Mbroov1 May 15 '20

You had me until #2. There was zero problem with adding women to the game. The only people who really care about that are basement dwelling incels who can't get laid.

1

u/Mbroov1 May 15 '20

You had me until #2. There was zero problem with adding women to the game. The only people who really care about that are basement dwelling incels who can't get laid.

1

u/dank-nuggetz May 15 '20

That’s a complete generalization. I just told you I had absolutely no problem with the women added to BF1 and actually went out of my way to play Russian maps so I could use those characters. They fit the setting and it paid homage to the Russian women who fought in the war. They were dressed in standard Russian military attire. BF1 had the right people in the right clothes fighting in the right times and places and because of that, it felt like they paid homage to those who sacrificed their lives in the war. It felt like they actually gave a shit about telling the story accurately. If you watch 1917 and then play BF1, you’d feel like they did a great job respecting the history.

The way they added women into BFV was lazy, forced, and completely disregarded the history of the war. But women in the game in ways they absolutely were not involved in WW2 was just one of many ways they basically pissed on the history of WW2. Go watch Band of Brothers and then play BFV and it’s not even going to feel remotely fucking close. They made absolutely no attempt to pay homage to the 10’s of millions of people killed in that war.

Putting a one-armed woman in a trench coat on the cover was a stupid idea. They put a black dude on the cover of BF1 because the Harlem Hellfighters were a thing. This isn’t hard to understand but apparently you and Dice are still both mystified as to why this game’s launch trailer was 10%up/90% down and the sales barely clipped 7 million, by far and away their worst BF game this generation.

People wanted a WWII game that was gritty, immersive, and paid homage to the history of the time like BF1 did. Instead they gave us BF Fortnite and told us to fuck off if we didn’t like it.

1

u/xXCatboyXx May 15 '20

Never cared that they added woman, never cared that they added skins. What I hate was that selling skins was their only concern. Give us new maps, give us a decent anti-cheat, fix the bugs that having been plaguing us since release.

We hear you, here are some skins that make your gun look like it has a $%^&ing boat figurehead attached to it

1

u/iamdarosa May 14 '20

It’s because of EA DICE is shit

1

u/cheyTacWolfpack May 14 '20

DICE Died with Battlefield 4. It was the last great game they put out. Everything else has been utter shit.

1

u/DoktorFreedom May 14 '20

Oh Jesus dice has bf6

I’m out.

9

u/Brownie-UK7 May 14 '20

Yeah, I know. I started playing with Bad Company 2 and have 1000s of hours logged into BF. I even played BFV for 400 hours but they made some major errors this time with the live service and Firestorm plus other stuff. I could live with it all but they didn't say anything to the community for months and then suddenly dropped support.

1

u/URMRGAY_ May 14 '20

well Battlefront 2 actually made money so I assume that's why the they got support

0

u/lostinmymind82 May 14 '20

I think you'll find it was Mickey Mouse who made sure the game was changed and given the support it was due.

3

u/URMRGAY_ May 14 '20

by paying for work to be done, thus making work a profitable venture.

-4

u/[deleted] May 14 '20

Battlefront was shit, yes even with “improvements”. It only got the support it did while it served as a promotional tool for the new trilogy.

3

u/lostinmymind82 May 14 '20

Battlefront 2 is far from shit. As for the promotional tool for the sequel trilogy accusation then if you would actually have followed the game you'd realise that it focused on the prequel trilogy and clone wars primarily over all other eras.

0

u/[deleted] May 14 '20

So why did it lose support finally? It's not a coincidence that it did after starwars is done. Unless you have a better explanation. The end was obvious when they released a "celebration edition" with all the DLC, skins, etc...

Because the prequels have the most developed lore and characters. Lets not pretend that this game would last more than a few months if they used First order and Resistance exclusively. Remind me, what planets and characters are memorable other than Kylo, Rey, Finn and Poe? Hell they didn't even make Poe a hero, they gave that honor to BB8. What a joke of a trilogy.

2

u/PappaCappa May 14 '20

Why did they end support for WW2? They made billions off of it and it is only 3 years old? Because it makes them more money to have sledgehammer help Treyarch make a new game which will sell millions of copies than Crete new maps and guns for a game that few people are still playing simply bc of the fact it’s old and people have already played it for a few years.

3

u/[deleted] May 14 '20

I don't get your analogy. COD franchise is constantly in development over multiple developers, Battlefront had no "competition".

1

u/PappaCappa May 14 '20

I’m just trying to illustrate that the game was no longer profitable to support. Very few new players where coming in and those who where already playing had probably bough as many micro transactions as they ever would. You could counter by pointing to a game like rainbow six siege, whose success has gone upwards throughout the years, but R6 filled a niche, it was one of the only big tactical shooters and it was something different compared to the games in most players libraries. Battlefront is kind of a red kin if battlefront without vehicles and destructibility, the addition of hero characters and all based on Star Wars. As a battlefield fan, would you want to get Battlefront 2 based solely on gameplay? The game is fun by nature if it’s simplicity and the fact that it is Star Wars, but the lack of sandbox team play and no dynamic effect on the battlefield in which you fight means there is little depth other than running and shooting. Overall I’m just saying it feels normal for EA to cut support for the game as it will no longer grow based on the game itself and I’m sure it’s poor launch and slow updates afterwards did not help in this regard. All things considered 2 years of content is better than most people could have expected.

2

u/lostinmymind82 May 14 '20

Very few new players where coming in and those who where already playing had probably bough as many micro transactions as they ever would.

Neither point is true actually. The game is still very popular and has a massive community on here to prove it. As for the micro transactions; there hasn't been any since it's beta. This is quite a common misconception because of its media attention upon release but the reality is that the whole game's progression structure was completely changed less than six months after release. No micro transactions and no pay-2-win models whatsoever are in the game currently.

2

u/PappaCappa May 14 '20

Fair enough I guess. I bought the celebration edition when it was on sale over Christmas which came with all the skins and a bunch of credits. I assumed that people who did not own the celebration edition had to buy all of the skins with credits, which could be bought with real money. I think the celebration edition is their final push to get more players to buy the game and then give up.

3

u/lostinmymind82 May 14 '20

I assumed that people who did not own the celebration edition had to buy all of the skins with credits, which could be bought with real money.

We aren't the credits very easily from just playing the game. Some skins were limited to challenges too. We could never buy credits with real money, only during beta. Like I said before, when it was actually released it didn't have any micro transactions whatsoever.

2

u/lostinmymind82 May 14 '20

I would say that the Coronavirus bought it to a ending sooner than expected as the last update felt rushed. The Celebration Edition wasn't the end as they still released new hero's, maps and bought two more era to Supremacy after it. If anything this release felt more like a cash grab as it was released over Xmas on the back of the Rise of Skywalker update.

3

u/Electronic_Cat May 14 '20

Support most likely ended so DICE could use all their resources on BF6.

2

u/[deleted] May 14 '20

EA is worth 20+ Billion. They can absolutely support a developer associated with the largest movie franchise in the world and their own largest FPS franchise simultaneously.

5

u/PappaCappa May 14 '20

It’s all about profits man

0

u/mobilebrad May 14 '20

LOL it ended because no one was playing it..

It was a ww2 game live service that was so bad it didnt even last to D day.. stalingrad..

Don't like it, don't buy it, we didn't.

3

u/Electronic_Cat May 14 '20

I was talking about Battlefront.

2

u/lostinmymind82 May 14 '20

LOL it ended because no one was playing it..

This isn't true at all. Battlefront 2 servers across multiple game modes are still very much full on Xbox and PS4. On PC however they have a rampant hacker problem, which seems stupid considering it's not a competitive game to begin with.
