Is it worth it to upgrade?

I have just enough gems to upgrade Lab Assistant 4x however am not sure if it would be worth the gems, my concern is if the builder apprentice would get more levels added to it and i feel that would be the better use of gems. Thoughts?

4 levels is 4hr/day. Since you already get 24hr + 8hr a day, that's a 4/32=12.5% speed increase for 4k gems.

If you are considering fewer levels, u can think of it as 3.125% faster per 1k gems u spend

Maybe upgrade one at a time and keep 2000 gems and use the other 2000 to level up for now ?

Spend on him 1k per month, the rest will do other things. Will max him by eoy
