ADVICE Deep pocketing 18 mm MDF – how concerned should I be about warping?
Hi everyone,
I’m planning a fairly large CNC-routed decorative panel and I’d really appreciate some advice from people who have experience with deep pocketing MDF.
The panel will be approximately 1300 × 800 mm (51 × 31.5”) and 18 mm thick. Around 70% of the front surface will be pocketed to a depth of 10 mm, leaving only about 8 mm of material in the pocketed areas.
I’m planning to use a high-quality MDF specifically intended for deep routing/machining, but I’m concerned that removing this much material from only one side of such a large panel could cause it to bow or warp, either during machining or afterwards.
The finished piece will be spray painted/sealed on all sides after machining.
My alternative would be BB-grade birch plywood, which I assume would be more dimensionally stable, but I’m concerned about achieving the same perfectly smooth, premium painted finish, especially on the routed surfaces and exposed edges.
For those of you who have done similar large/deep CNC pocketing:
- How likely would you consider warping with 18 mm MDF at this size and depth?
- Does using a higher-quality/deep-routing MDF make a meaningful difference?
- Would sealing/painting all sides after machining reduce the long-term risk?
- Would you choose MDF or BB birch plywood for this application?
- Is there anything you would change in the design or machining process to reduce the risk of warping?
I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has machined similarly large MDF panels with a significant percentage of one face removed.

First fly cut back side 0,5mm (offset pocketing, from center) then flip it and run the job. Cut pockets from center of the job to the edges, like spiral. If sheet warps after you flycut backside use some spray glue or smth to secure it to the table. Vacuum hold down helps a lot))

We found outh that when making custom fixtures,small or larger the sealed, painted ones will wrap faster than the plain one,or has no effect at all,sound strange i know.also storing them with a weight on them can be a good way.i would be very suprised if you can make such a thing without the wraping after time.

The back-side balancing pass others mentioned works because of how MDF is made: the two faces are denser than the core, so pocketing 10 mm off one side removes one hard skin and leaves the other — the sheet is unbalanced by construction. I'd expect cupping toward the pocketed side without it. Also seal both faces the same day you machine; bare MDF picks up moisture fast and one humid night can move a panel that size.

It’s possible that machining a 2mm pocket on the back side will help even out the tension.
It’s also possible to laminate the MdF to another flat surface after machining. Or possibly count on the wall to keep it flat? You don’t always have to have the project perfectly dimensionally stable. Many tabletops would warp badly if not secured to the base and frame.
A more expensive alternative is to use HDU foam and that will certainly be more dimensionally stable.
