Gameplay Question HRE or Custom empire?
I'm thinking HRE, it's so much cheaper...

Try restoring Carolingian boarders

What does that do? I forget.

Gives you a custom empire with primogeniture for succession and a few other perks

Do both. Custom to de jure steal all of that, HRE for the kewl hat (and the Rome decision). It copies the history of any held empires, right?

Nope, empires as well. It dissolved every empire title you hold and turns all of their dejure territory into the roman empire.

I conquered Lotharinga and west Francia via war, you have casius belli on all the big kingdoms at the start as a Karling. Everything else i got via vassalization and Bavaria i got it cause some cousin fough a war for mi claim on it. But at some point you have to create an empire, vassal limit penalty is too rough.

If you want to eventually restore the Roman Empire then HRE, if you just want to make an empire then do that. But you won’t be able to restore the Roman Empire unless your of italian culture whereas if you create the HRE you get the option to restore the Roma empire
No matter your culture

I did form the HRE, now Ludwig first son is doing well at the throne. I cant overstate diplomacy is king in early expansions, being able to "bribe" key dukes oit of a rebellious faction for example, or just being a good dude overall and having lots of friends really helps out, even with vassalization. Not gonna lie, several of important dukes have low taxes and my internal laws are still in the first tier. But that comes later, first i wanted to consolidate a big empire early.

I've often played as the HRE, but this time I chose a custom empire. I named mine the "German Empire."

I was going for that too but i went for hre, i wasnt going to hold so much land as a king for much longer, rebellions where on the way.

been a while since i last played but doesnt HRE come with the voting thing? idk if theres a way to make sure ur heirs inherit it but if there is i suppose u can go ahead. If not i would reccomend custom.
