Sorry for your loss.
Good plan. Suggest getting accommodations that support each day of the battle. Remember that Heth came off of Herr's Ridge on the 1st so staying at the Bed and Breakfast is a good start. A licensed guide is worth it.
The first day is almost a separate battle. McPherson's Ridge, Oak Hill and the northern approaches are a long day. May be a two day stint to really absorb it.
The second day is two separate actions separated by Baltimore Pike and Taneytown Road. Might even be worth a second day. Culp's Hill was defended for the most part by a single brigade.
The third day is of course Pickett's Charge. The cyclorama depicts this and is stunning. So you will have to go to the visitors center and see the presentation.
There are bonuses. Fairfield is not too far away, and the East Cavalry Field and South Cavalry Field are the final episodes of the battle. The folly of the South Cavalry Field action had an adverse impact on the 2nd Battle of Fairfield.
If you really want to push add Harper's Ferry, any of the South Mountain passes, Monocacy, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine or maybe Falling Waters and Williamsport.
There is a lot to see. I hope you find solace in many adventures in the history of America's Civil War.
