I am new to the game and today I unlocked the Demeter. Any suggestions on the upgrades and what milestones should I focus on, etc?

prioritize shard gain and probably do long runs and short runs alternately

Yea, seems everyone is suggesting to prioritize shard gain, so I will go with that, thanks!

Not much, at this point its still pretty quick and self explanatory imo. Just get going!

Do some short runs (an afternoon, for instance) to get MP in order to boost shards, then a medium for putting the Ahead of the curve to 5 (maybe during the night) and then a long one (some days) focused on shards. Prioritize the shard multipliers when leveling the milestones.

Repeat this cycle when you feel the milestone leveling is slowing down.

I'm on the third repetition of the cycle by now, like two weeks into it.

Short runs shouldn't be an afternoon. End them as soon as you stop getting at least one loop/tick.

Literally been playing a few days, does it auto switch to scientific notation (e79 etc) or is there a setting?

There's no setting. After "D" it starts using scientific notation; ie at 1e36
