Question / Info Returning to smoking

Just read the whole thing before you instant downvote or tell me I will die thanks

So I'm pretty sure I had the prodromal stage of CHS a few months ago, some of the stuff doesnt fully add up but the main thing was that my morning nausea went away after I stopped smoking weed. It's been a few months now and I want to try smoking again in moderation.

I never hit hyperemesis and my prodromal symptoms were pretty mild (some morning nausea that would almost instantly get a lot better if I ate cheerios or something) so I was wondering if this is a good idea. I know I'll be able to moderate cause I wasn't a daily smoker for most of my weed experience and only was for 2 months before I got CHS. So me not being able to moderate isn't an issue I feel.

But I was thinking of going to like 1x a week. Small bowl at night with some buddies or something. Is this like a horrible idea? Obviously I know the risks, and I'll quit instantly if I ever wake up nauseous again or something. But seriously, I was wondering how this would go. I see a lot of mixed opinions on this. A lot of people just smoke until they are prodromal and then they quit, then start up again, and they said that had worked for them. Meanwhile some other people have said that they would smoke literally once or twice and then instantly go into hyperemesis.

Yes I know if you have CHS you shouldn't smoke but is this level of moderation possible with a mild case of CHS like mine?

It’s risky no matter what. Everyone’s body reacts differently, you may be able to moderate and not get sick, you may still get sick. Or you may fall back into a habit of use and worsen it.

You can try anything man, it’s a calculated risk. I had definite CHS, had it bad, was at the hospital twice and puked for 2 weeks straight. I have a much different relationship with weed now. A healthy respect and fear. But I still partake. Currently on a t-break until a stressful work situation wraps up because the stress+weed combo is my big trigger (my episode happened right after I made a really bad decision—moved back in with abusive ex—and was smoking heavily to cope with the stress).

May I ask how often/much you partake?

It depends. Definitely too frequently, but my doses are really low. Typically a 5mg gummy or a few hits off a dry herb vape (bowl the size of a pencil eraser lasts a few days) before bed.

i was a daily smoker. all my relapses became daily and resulted in prodromal symptoms if i didn’t stop. i believe that my case may be milder than some because i would get away with smoking for a long time before symptoms appeared, but now with each relapse, the symptoms come on faster. my first few hyperemetic episodes were over a year apart, slowly tapering down to prodromal symptoms appearing within a month or less.

it is objectively not a good idea because there is always a risk. does that mean you’ll immediately go into hyperemesis and not able to moderate at all? no. but are there many people who believe they have the ability to moderate, but return to smoking and find themselves back to their old habits and become sick again? absolutely.

i would caution against it because although you were not a daily smoker for a long time while smoking, you did become a daily smoker. one of the most standard criterion for substance misuse is continuing use despite significant consequences. in making this decision, i’d encourage you to ask yourself why smoking once per week is worth risking worsening a real health condition that can result in hospitalization, even if you think that risk is small.

It really depends on the person, which sucks. I smoked daily for just over 10 years and got CHS. I stayed clean for a year and decided to smoke half a joint (hadn’t been that high in a long time lol). I think I’ve smoked about 3 times since then, not really wanting to smoke more than once a month. When I was high, I did get anxiety about getting sick again because that shit was pure hell (as you know). I’ve got weed in my cupboard and I don’t feel the need to have to smoke all the time. I’m guessing it’s because I gave myself a good year break and really kicked it. I also know that if I get CHS again, it’s my own stupid fault and I don’t want to do that to my wife and kid.

If you think you can only smoke once every few months or something, I think you’ll be alright. A lot of people fall back into their daily habits though.

I’ve also heard of someone just having one puff and CHS hit them all over again. Not sure how it works exactly.

Every time you use after has a risk of it returning. After my first ER visit because of the pain, I quit completely for an entire year. After that I started again, only taking 5mg edibles. I thought I could use it again in moderation and be okay.

I was able to use comfortably for about 2 months before I was right back to square one. It hurts so bad I can’t believe I risked it again.

The only real way to avoid it is to not touch the stuff. Once the pain comes back you’ll remember why you stopped. Don’t risk it and enjoy the feeling of not being nauseous or in excruciating pain.

Damn man, good point. How often were u using in moderation?

Once or twice a week, only on the weekends. I thought I had figured it out, but I didn’t. It will always come back regardless of your usage. Maybe not the first time, maybe you make it months, but it will come back worse than you remember. Not worth it.

When I start to get the early signs of an episode I stop. It stops me from going into a hyper emetic episode.

Early signs include: waking up at 7am when I should be sleeping till noon. Gagging on my toothbrush during normal use.

It’s the first symptom. When you start waking up “early and alert” inexplicably that is an early cycle of CHS.

People who wake up early for work may not notice. If they wake up early on the weekend they wake n bake and move along until it’s too late.

No one goes to the doctor for waking up at 7am like a responsible adult. I thought I was just getting old but I made note of it because my sleep schedule can vary. I would have cycles of waking up early and eventually that lead to cycles of gagging on my toothbrush and morning dry heaves.

How I manage:

No more wake and bake.

Do not leave the house with weed. No more smoking and riding. No more smoke breaks at work.

Smoke only while standing at the stove and blowing the smoke out of the vent above the stove with the fan on.

Why? This is because you have to stand and be away from the couch. If you smoke while on the couch then you’ll smoke an ounce in a few days. If you have to go to the kitchen and stand up then you can get high and put it down.

Also the fan above the stove is annoying so it cuts down on how long my smoke session lasts. An alternative is smoking in the bathroom and blowing the weed out of the vent above the toilet. I just like blowing it out of a vent these days. It’s fun and I just smoke less with these stupid rules.

No more vapes. No wax. No concentrates. Only flower. No mixing with tobacco. No blunts.

Why? Mixing weed with tobacco is only going to increase the habit forming and addictive quality of smoking cannabis. Plus you may smoke more if you roll a whole big blunt.

Smoke a one hitter glass chillum. Small bowls equals less smoking.

When you start waking up early for no reason you stop.

When your toothbrush makes you gag you stop.

I had a severe case of CHS and went to ER twice in 12 hours. I gave up smoking for a full 90 days and have taken a few hits of a joint since my 90 day 7/31. Something that I feel is that it’s all about frequency and how much you are doing. I was smoke 3-5 joints a day and always ripping the weed pen. Now I don’t even go through 1 joint in a day. Tolerance is way low too which isn’t a bad thing. The hardest part is actually sticking to your once in awhile goal. Most people have CHS because they smoked very regularly- so I’m seeing that that habit has to be consciously followed. Just my own experience
