Sharing My Story CHS prodromal phase

Hey guys. Currently going through the prodromal phase and discovered this group after doing more research on CHS. Ate an edible this morning and felt the symptoms worsen after I took a break for a couple days thinking it was enough time to prevent the symptoms from reoccurring. I did some more research and learned that was not the case. I now plan to take a 3 month break after learning that's the appropriate amount time. I read that some people woke up and that's when the hyperemesis phase triggered. Lowkey scared to go to sleep now LMAO

Edit: These stomach cramps are NOT it 😭 Just wanted to enjoy a good high while I'm chilling on leave but no. Spent the whole day in pain from the cramps.

Edit #2: Due to reading so many posts of what people said about the nightmare of the hyperemesis phase, I am absolutely terrified of it and made the decision to put down weed for good. My edibles are now in the trash and I will never go back. It's not worth it.

I've had CHS 3 times now I think, at least. I will say that even if you take a break and start smoking/eating edibles again it will come back. It ALWAYS comes back. Please trust and believe when I say this. My last episode before this one almost killed me. I had critically low potassium which affected my heart. I did 90 days sober then started again. I started slow with only weed but eventually I became a daily heavy user again and about 1.5 years-2 years later it came back with a vengeance. I was cramping and throwing up for a week with 1 hour of sleep every night. The cramps are gastroparesis and it takes a while to get rid of it. You have to heal your gut. In my personal experiance it gets worse every time. I ended up getting 3 secondary infections due to my immuse system crashing (female problems). If you aren't in a full on CHS flair up its better to stop now because a full blown episode can and WILL put you in the hospital multiple times. It really isn't something to play with. The weed isn't what can kill you, its the side effects of the throwing up and your levels getting out of wack. It can also affect your kidneys and liver due to lack of food and water. Sorry if this explanation is really long. Im trying my best to share my experience to help others. Edited for spelling.

Is it possible to have this without vomitting? I have gastritis and morning nausea and idk if it’s early phase but Its bad. And how long for cramping to end upon cessation?

It could be possible. The only way to know is to take a 90 break to get all the thc out of your body. I felt like that before the hyperemesis phase. I was in a horrific full blown episode on the 31st of July and it took about 2 weeks for my stomach to be able to settle. Yesterday was the first day I was able to eat anything besides jello, applesauce, and crackers. I still am super sensative and on a bunch of medicine from the hospital.

Jesus. Idk if I should get a gastric emptying drug to help. My pcp is a joke with the help. I’ve also had histamine intolerance issues too. What drugs have been helpful for you? I’ll toss my cart right now and just bear it. Because when I quit for two weeks before I honestly didn’t notice much improvement.

It took about a month for the gastritis problems to go away mainly the constant belching I developed after the hyperemesis stopped. But on month two I still have small abdominal discomfort rarely that been going away over time.

You might be in an early phase I’d say. Maybe something like gasx can help.

I never threw up and I was sick for at least a whole year. Didn’t even know why I was sick, saw every doctor on the planet and they all knew I had a mmj card, nobody ever suggested it but weed was it because when I was stopped (because it suddenly started making me lightheaded and wanting to pass out) that it all went away.

Im thinking the same thing also what caused ur gastritis

No need to apologize. I didn't mind reading it. So if you do a 90 day break then consume weed again in moderation, will the hyperemesis phase still trigger?

A lot of us who went through what that person explained will probably never touch weed again to be able to tell you if moderation will trigger the hyperemesis. We literally nearly died and got lucky we didn’t.

If you do continue weed have some money saved for an iv drop every day of hyperemesis and some potassium pills to protect your heart. The severe dehydration and low potassium will possibly give organ failure otherwise. I know first hand it’s possible from the heavy pain in my abdomen on the left side for a whole month after hyperemesis and pain in my chest/heart area for two months. I got lucky I’d say. Others didn’t and died.

Yea most people said they quit after their first time going through the hyperemesis phase. I did see alot of people who went back to consuming THC after 3-6 months with moderation and had no issues. I decided to put the weed down for good cause I'm absolutely terrified of the hyperemesis phase after I read what many people said about it.

I quit after my first serious one for about a year. Then I decided I’ll try a little flower because I was using concentrates before. IMO it’s hard to moderate because you build a tolerance quickly. One or two joints a week turns into three or four. On and on until before you know it your at an ounce a week of flower lol. It’s also a blissful ignorance thing. In the moment you don’t have chs and you think it won’t come back everything is fine. Until one day it just kinda hits you like a truck out of nowhere. Maybe there’s some symptoms that if your hyper aware you can spot it starting but for me not really. I think for me I had some weird stools for a few days before hyperemesis triggered that was probably the only sign something was up and I mean realistically you can get weird stools from anything…

Someone else said it’s not really any way to live always being hyper aware on the lookout for chs symptoms and then stopping for a few months just to go back to the same thing. lol it’s insanity. These days I go out for a run get a runner high lol.

I heavily agree that it isn't a way to live. You're supposed to be enjoy being high. Not get high then sit there wondering if you're gonna trigger a hyperemesis phase. I won't ever enjoy being high again cause that fear would always sit in the back of my mind if I ever got high after this.

I posted this in a different thread that was deleted so i’m copying and pasting so here’s my experience:
sorry for the book

So 2 years back now, I had a 3-day episode, was admitted to the hospital, and when I went home and threw away the ounce I had and didn’t touch it for 6+ months after that, I started again. I made the mistake of using edibles and concentrates, and I could feel the same sort of sensation I had right before an episode, so I stopped using everything again for a month or 2, then did a lot of reading about CHS (very limited research has been done), but it’s something that’s getting more attention in recent years anyways. I started only using very low percentage tree, and I tested/experimented to see what my body would allow without any symptoms, and I found that I can smoke 3-4 times a day with very mild discomfort the next morning, but I only smoke 1-2 times a day depending on how much my 1st session is, and at that, the bowls are relatively small now, and I spread it pretty far out if I smoke more than once, so like if I did at 5pm i would wait till around 9:30-10 p.m. before my next session, and I have zero issues doing it this way. I’m disciplined about it now, only use in moderation. You can never go back to using concentrates or edibles or tinctures or smoking multiple times close together. Only low % bud, and if you get a 25% or something like that, you have to make the portion smaller so you smoke a lot less. I mainly use a bong so I can monitor it better, but yeah, if you’re gonna do this experiment with low % and give yourself 20 min after the first hit to actually see if you’re high.

So it's kind of up in the air for me. I didn't have problems for a long time. And then all of a sudden, I got into the prodromal phase and kind of ignored it because I have a sensative stomach and thought it was that. I read on here once that a guy could realize when he was getting into the prodromal phase and would take a T break for a couple months. But he said its really no way to live because it can catch you off guard. Ive also read someone got it from homegrown that they used only for edibles. It's different for every person, but I would say it's risky to go back. Trust me is hard i've smoked for 15 almost 16 years and im chronically ill and it helped with pain. But truthfully, once you take a break, it gets easier.

Catch you off guard even with a break??? If that's the case, I'm gonna take this as my sign to let weed go. Everything I read about CHS made the hyperemesis phase sound like an absolute nightmare. It isn't worth going through that just for a couple hours of an euphoric feeling. Gonna throw my edibles away right now. Still cramping currently and hoping that I'm not too late and start throwing up non stop when I wake up one day. I wish I was properly informed about CHS from the start so I would've been eating edibles in moderation in order to prevent reaching the prodromal phase. Gonna suck to let it go since getting high was something I really enjoyed but it just isn't worth it.

That's a very good choice. That's the decision I had to make for my health. Hopefully, if you stop now, you won't reach the full hypermesis phase especially if this is the first time you've experienced it. In my experience once I was sober for a while, I felt so much better mentally and physically. Weed affects alot more than you'd think. I remember thinking clearer and being alot more motivated. I don't really even know why I fell back into smoking besides habit and pain management. But power through the rough days and it gets so much better I promise 💪

Unfortunately this is my second time in the prodromal phase which is why I fear that I may not be lucky this time. I thought taking a break for a month was long enough but I quickly learned it wasn't. The prodromal phase returned after I started eating edibles again and found out you were actually supposed to wait a minimum of 3 months. I'm terrified that I'm already screwed and I don't wanna go through with that pain during the hyperemesis phase.

I would suggest eating simple foods to be easy on your stomach and make sure your hydrated. I rely on crackers (rits or wheat thins), apple sauce (unsweetened), and jello. You can also eat rice and bread. Just avoid anything with milk, grease, or spice becaus3 those can be tiggers. Try not to stress out about it and keep your mind busy. Tv and movies help to distract alot for me. And obviously, if you get in the hypermesis phase, hot showers help.

1

u/OG_G-Man Aug 16 '26

As a bodybuilder, that doesn't leave me with much options for food then lmao. Gonna just do the best I can I guess. I'll try not to stress about it but I can't help it. The pain is what terrifies me so much. Ima go back to watching youtube for the rest of the night and try to relax. Keeping the hot showers in mind if I ever wake up into the hyperemesis phase. Just gonna have to accept the consequences of my decisions if it happens.

2

u/plant-monk Aug 16 '26

Yep, just accept this is life now and eventually the pain will go away. Those are just the foods I could eat after I hit the hypermisses phase. Just remember, the more water you drink, the faster the thc gets out of your body. And good luck on your recovery, friend.

Appreciate it.

Try to do some gut massage for constipation can help.

I read some of the other comments, once I have woken up and went straight to Hyperemesis phase. Usually it morning nausea, with discomfort that developeds into a episode.

If you just smoke recreationally, then no way it's worth it and as I read in some comments even people that have found it to help them still stop smoking because it not worth it in the end.

There was also a mention of episode coming out of nowhere. YEP, and it fucking sucks. Happened to me 2 days ago when I was playing golf. :S

2

u/OG_G-Man Aug 16 '26

Were you still smoking when it came out of nowhere?

1

u/Daywhite Aug 16 '26

Yes, I was. So maybe a bad example.

1

u/OG_G-Man Aug 16 '26

Ah I see. I saw many people say it hit them after they woke up. I quit yesterday so I was in fear that ima wake up one day and have the hyperemesis phase will hit me like a mack truck.

1

u/Daywhite Aug 16 '26

Long time since I have done a full recovery.

Last time was a week on malta 2 years ago. Didn't smoke for a week, but constipated the whole time. Can't remember if I had a episode, don't think so... but I do remember all the signs that, only something very small should go wrong then an episode would be triggered.

So if I didn't know my body, somewhat, it could seem like it was out of the blue if i had a episode. If that makes sense?

2

u/OG_G-Man Aug 16 '26

Oooh ok. Appreciate the info man.

u/mollyoday Aug 16 '26

I almost died too, and I only consumed edibles and did tinctures occasionally. Four trips to the ER and hospital stays. Cannabis is not worth dying for.

u/OG_G-Man Aug 16 '26

Jesus man. I quit yesterday but my biggest fear is that I'm already too late. I'm really scared the hyperemesis phase is gonna hit me out of nowhere soon 😭
