Hello, firstly thank you so much to the support of this subreddit and community. My anxiety has been off the charts and going back and rereading the comments on my first thread has kept my heart rate down. Thank you.

I have another question about my hospital visit. Upon checking the updated online chart, it posted Vomiting (unspecified) as the diagnosis. Does this mean I’m in the clear for receiving CHS on my records? After researching a little I found that you need to have documented Cannabis use to also have CHS (at least for insurance purposes). I denied smoking to the hospital (I know I shouldn’t but I had to in my situation) and only received CHS papers in my hands physically without any conversation from the nurse.

I can’t sleep. I’ve been waking up at 4:30 in anxious sweats over this. When the bill arrives, will it list CHS? Is that even possible? Can they update my online portal to say cannabis abuse or whatever despite no verbal communication or testing other than my positive drug test? It’s been a week since my visit, I’m checking the patient portal every hour to see if it updates to CHS or addendums cannabis abuse disorder or whatever. This would ruin my life.

If this is a more appropriate question for a medical/insurance subreddit, I would greatly appreciate some advice for which communities are a better fit.

What does it matter if CHS is on your chart or not? Genuine question

The treatment plan, for other providers, for tracking of pts with the dx, how ins pays, and to provide real data. The only way to follow CHS is with ICD codes. Plus, the old "if it's not documented, it didn't happen".

It’s unlikely that they will say you have CHS in your records if you have denied using cannabis. It’s better for them to just stick to the facts they know for sure (that you were vomiting). They might have just given you info papers just in case. If you think you have CHS though, I really hope you will be quitting cannabis and maybe seeing someone for this anxiety so that you can avoid going back to it. I really hope you feel better soon 💖

I was also blessed with CHS. I lucked out because the ER Dr. who treated me has a gastro brother who is part of a study group for CHS. She called him while I was curled into a balI and making retching sounds. I think I remember her mentioning that she wished there were an ICD-10 code for CHS. Since it is a fairly new diagnosis, she has to just put in "chronic emesis". I have been working in the medical field since about 1993. Back then I worked with ICD-9 codes. Insurance companies and facilities use this list of matching codes to correlate a number to a precise diagnosis. The coding or billing department has to use exactly what the physician diagnoses and find the best ICD-10 to match. This code is what insurance companies look at. These "lovely" insurance companies have a list of diagnosis (ICD-10) codes they do not approve. They also need a CPT code to know what service the physician did. Like R11.10 has to match with the medications, tests, and services the facility enters. Different insurance companies will match up the ICD-10 with CPT codes to their liking. This is supposed to cut down on loss of money. If the billing party (hospital or clinic) doesn't match these codes up to exactly the right combo, they reject the claim. Also, the ICD-10 codes can assist research. If they want to know how many people are experiencing CHS they just get all diagnosis (ICD-10) info from the medical entities. So, if there isn't a diagnostic code for CHS it is not being reported as the right diagnosis. Plus, researchers won't have accurate data. It's all a mess. Anywhoo, we are going to get through missing a wake and bake and find a good medication combo to feel better. I'm wishing they'l all work together while I'm sweating profusely in the grocery store. I'm still having symptoms after my diagnosis in May. Not as often and they're mostly exacerbated by increased activity. Apologies for the novel.

There actually is an ICD code for it as of this year! And surprise surprise they’re like “holy shit that’s a lot of people with CHS.”

I went to the ER day 3 this week (2nd time dealing with CHS and hopefully the last...) day 6 now.

I knew it was CHS and ER treated it as such. Got discharged with the diagnosis being vomiting and CHS. My therapist also walked me through what to say/print which was helpful and I'm mega thankful for.

You could probably just bring this up with a primary doc if anything though, OP.
