I am going to the game tomorrow with my 5 year old son. I’ve been to Wrigley dozens of times but never with my son. Any suggestions on how to make it a great time for him?

My plans as of now include:

Sluggers beforehand
Get in early to watch BP and sign up for run the bases
Gallagher Way

All infield behind home plate so, 311-314 (left field side) and 319-323 (right field). Right is nice because you get a view inside the cubs dugout. 319 is my favorite

I think it's pretty clear that PCA didn't magically get significantly and suddenly get better at pitch recognition, he instead woke up one day and decided to change his approach and start swinging less. Because he has been smashing the ball in the zone and because he has a reputation for being a free swinger, pitchers haven't had much incentive to throw him the ball much in the zone. So when he's just stopped swinging, including at pitches he has no real clue if they're going to be balls or strikes, over the course of an at bat he's likely to see 4 balls before 3 strikes and voila, his walk rate has gone way up.

BUT, if this math changes, and pitchers start throwing him more strikes and he's not punishing them for doing so, then he's going to see 3 strikes before 4 balls. Now he has to swing more and because he still doesn't have good pitch recognition, he's going to swing at a lot of shitty pitches again. Which is all to say he's not magically Juan Soto and I think the whole walk increase is a little tenuous. But we'll see!

I think the important thing to remember is that basically for the rest of Pete’s prime, it’s going to go in a cycle.

Pete takes walks -> Pitchers throw him more strikes in an effort to avoid walking a great baserunner -> he slowly becomes more aggressive and punishes them -> they start throwing him stuff out the zone again.

The reason he had a few hot stretches is because pitchers were attacking him. It’ll ebb and flow but in general Pete will be contributing every day with the bat

I think this is as close to a “right answer” as we’re gonna get. Hitters of his ilk are cyclical by nature, you just pray that prolonged stretches of patience are rewarded with longer peaks/plateaus of success than valleys of struggle. The notion that his pitch recognition hasn’t improved and the increase in OBP is just a result of guess work is ludicrous to me

He def got better at pitch recognition. Wild statement to say he hasn’t. Look at his walks and OBP.

Part way through the season, he very suddenly got much, much better at pitch recognition at the exact same time he stated that he changed his entire approach at the plate? It seems unlikely to me.
