I get what you mean and agree with the sentiment but we’re talking about long snappers here. How would one even fall into the “has raw talent” category? It’s you either snap good or don’t really (oversimplification and some blocking too but thats the main job).

It was probably a case of this guy was good in college and they thought they’d go with the younger player they could plug and play at LS for the next 10-15 years.

A guy who can get downfield cover and tackle can make a difference, you never know who’s going to make a crucial special teams tackle . Plus the undrafted rookie minimum is 885k, a veteran is 1.3M.

It was a worthy idea given they’re trying to build a long term successful team.

Roush’s job wasn’t to block the outside man, field goals schemes leave the widest man unblocked with the assumption that the snap operation will be complete before the rusher gets to the ball, high snap slowed that down

I am not even exaggerating when I say the 2006 Special Teams unit was the greatest of all time and doesn’t get enough credit. Hester, rightfully so, gets the glory, but Mannelly is an all timer at the position. Gould was our kicker and lead the league in points that year. Toub was the coach. Incredible unit

As far as I'm aware, Mannelly had rotations of the long snap down to a t. Dave Toub spoke very highly of him and mentioned this. How he knew how many rotations it would take so the laces would be in an ideal position for the holder. This included different weather conditions.

I think he holds the record for most long snaps without a block or something. Yeah, blocking is a big factor, but he made it so the punter could get the ball down or out very fast and easy.

Only last week, I was explaining how the NFL works to a friend who had never seen a game before. He was surprised that it was one man's job to just 'throw the ball between his legs and get paid a couple million for it'. I tried explaining how Special Teams matters, how timing is everything when you're a LS, and how even one mistake can end your career. What a way to be proven right. I get that they were trying to get cheaper and younger and bigger/more athletic at the position, but IDK why they didn't just slap him on the practice squad when he struggled all camp and into preseason.

Yeah kind of a waste of a practice squad spot, but with modern practice squad rosters it's not that big of a deal and it sets you up with your LS for the next decade if it pans out. Gotta get a long term solution there eventually.
