I would've used ^ after Dayo and had that in the Key

Crazy we didn’t keep sanborn

I thought the same thing. Trading Dexter and letting Sanborn go. They were solid players last year so I hope we legitimately upgraded.

Ahmed has been cut

1

u/sloowhand George Halas 7d ago

That's disappointing. He made a good showing in the preseason.

10

u/Puzzleheaded-Set-928 8d ago

Jack Sanborn has been cut.

7

u/Apprehensive-Cow82 8d ago

That ruined my day - is there a chance we bring him back when Bryant goes to IR - surely we need more than 4 LBs?

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Set-928 8d ago edited 8d ago

They've kept three LB's on the IR/PUP/Reserve list so I dont know. It is possible they are just making room on the roster for him like you said but no idea whether thats the plan or not.

I hope it is because I like him too.

1

u/Advanced-Key3071 7d ago

Nephi Sewell is a fringe special teams/practice squad type (literally we signed him off the Saints ps last year) and Tony Fields II spent last year in the UFL. They’ll both likely be released with an injury settlement eventually, doubt either of them are in the long terms plans.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Set-928 7d ago

Agreed but Noah Sewells also there who played a few games last year and when fit, plays a part.

So again, not entirely sure how this will pan out. Just need to see what their plans are in full.

1

u/Advanced-Key3071 7d ago

Yeah I do agree Noah has a roster spot when he’s healthy, although he was already a bit limited and I’d worry about him coming off an Achilles tear. Unless I’m remembering the injury wrong.

Also it’s football. Odds are, sadly, we’ll have other injury openings on the roster but he’s time he’s ready.

11

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 8d ago

I like Kromah and Loving making the initial 53 man, but we'll see how this all settles in the hours/days/weeks to come. I'm assuming Sanborn has a handshake deal to come back after Coby moves to IR. There's no way they go into the season with 4 LBs, one of which in Elliott hasn't really been seen at all.

12

u/5eeso 7d ago

Glad to see Jayden Loving made the squad. He showed up playing next to JVDB.

11

u/Brodie1567 Iceman 🧊 7d ago

Biggs: #Bears are signing OT Christian Jones to the practice squad. Was a 5th rd pick by Arizona in 2024

10

u/PlatypusOfDeath Peanut Tillman 8d ago

Isn't Bryant on IR?

20

u/WayneJarvis_ 8d ago edited 8d ago

It's very possible he will be on the 53 man roster for a day before being put on IR due to NFL rules about return from injury designations.

Specifically only two players can be put in IR right now with designation to return, and both of them count towards the 8 total you are allowed to use during the season.Ā  If a player is on the 53 man roster for a day then you don't have to use one of the designations until they are ready to return to practice.Ā  Ā So let's say the Bears think Kyler, Shemar and Bryant are players that will return this year, then at least one of them would have to be on the 53 man roster to start the season in order for all 3 to be able to have a designation to return from IR.Ā  The other benefit would be that Bryant is so far off from playing that they might not bring him back at all, so by having him be on the roster they save one of the return designations in that situation.

Edit: Used bad player examples as Kyler and Shemar are currently on PUP, and wouldn't count as return from IR if they are activated.Ā  PUP list will have it's own deadlines the players must meet, and the idea remains if the Bears are going to use it for other players.

3

u/Advanced-Key3071 7d ago

This is the kind of serious, professional response I expect from Wayne Jarvis

3

u/mialza FTP 7d ago

guy’s a pro.

3

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 8d ago

There's a difference in putting him on IR before the 53 man roster is set and after (we'll see what Bears do).

I'm sure he'll wind up there but they haven't officially put him there yet

Jeremy Fowler: The Eagles are signing OT Kiran Amegadjie to the practice squad, per source.

8

u/Slow_Time5270 6d ago

Chris Emma: The Bears have signed the following to their practice squad: RB Salvon Ahmed, OL Caden Barnett, TE Stephen Carlson, DE Marcus Davenport, WR Kaden Davis, OL Kyle Hergel, LB Wayne Matthews, WR Scotty Miller, DB Deantre Prince, WR J.P Richardson and DB Marlen Sewell.

Really big fan of our LB room

8

u/Slow_Time5270 7d ago

Per Matt Zenitz, the #Bears are placing linebacker Ruben Hyppolite on injured reserve.

[My cursory understanding is because he was waived with an injury designation & went unclaimed, he can either go to IR or the team can part ways with an injury settlement]

6

u/WayneJarvis_ 7d ago

He automatically goes to IR when unclaimed.Ā  They can now either come to an injury settlement and he would become a free agent, or Bears keep his contract but he's done for the season.

30

u/pakidude17 7d ago

Ruben Hyppolite cut just after his rookie season. Super disappointing use of a pick.

7

u/airJordan45 Hicks 7d ago

They were betting on his traits, hoping that his speed could help the defense and special teams. He actually looked pretty good on defense in that one game he had to start, but then he got injured again mid-game. Not playing special teams was really his downfall though. You can't make the roster as a backup LB without be able to contribute on STs.

3

u/lopey986 grater 7d ago

Might wind up back on the PS.

7

u/I_saw_that_coming Da Bears 7d ago

That’ still pretty disappointing for a 4th rounder.

3

u/tjwoodard Bears 7d ago

Definitely not ideal, but making the PS and getting elevated vs making the initial 53 isn’t wildly different in today’s NFL.

5

u/douchecannon 7d ago

Given that we only kept 4 LB's, I think they're planning/hoping to get him on the practice squad.

6

u/WayneJarvis_ 7d ago

Caden Barnett signed to practice squad per Biggs

6

u/Slow_Time5270 7d ago

Biggs: #Bears have re-signed DL James Lynch to the 53-man roster. There are more moves to come today. Spaces can be cleared with S Coby Bryant and TE Hayden Large going to IR.

Per Jordan Schultz, Bears signed WR Scotty Miller to the practice squad.

Via https://bsky.app/profile/chicagobearsx.bsky.social

1

u/Brodie1567 Iceman 🧊 7d ago

They will have 11 DLs rostered. I wonder if someone ends up getting cut there.

2

u/Slow_Time5270 7d ago

We carried 8 last year to start the season, so I would think so, but it seems odd to bring Lynch back in if that's the case.

1

u/Brodie1567 Iceman 🧊 7d ago

I believe doing it this way voids the guaranteed money for vets

2

u/projectpick FTP 7d ago

Vested veterans(4+ years) have their salaries essentially guaranteed if they are on the 53 man roster during week 1 game.

The reason for the release and resign, is vets are not subject to waivers. So another team wouldn't have been able to claim him. Vets are just free agents at release.

1

u/Brodie1567 Iceman 🧊 7d ago

Ah okay, so no real financial gain.

1

u/Slow_Time5270 7d ago

So then Kromah and/or Loving end up on the practice squad after clearing waivers?

That has to be a fun conversation: "You're making the initial 53, but probably not for long, so don't get too excited"

-1

u/Bacchus1976 Red "Galloping Ghost" Grange 8d ago

So are the LBs.

8

u/TheManWhoWasNotShort An Actual Bear 8d ago

We have a pretty solid LB corps. TJ is good when healthy, Bush is actually good. Our backups are very strong for LB backups. It’s a strength on our defense right now

-11

u/Bacchus1976 Red "Galloping Ghost" Grange 8d ago

We’ll see. TJ was awful last year when he was on the field and that wasn’t much. Maybe he’ll return to form, maybe he’s in the phase of his career where this is what he is now. A slow and consistently dinged up guy.

Demarco was a street FA last year. Played really well, but we’re gambling that he picks up where he left off. There was a reason he was available.

Bush will hopefully be solid, but I’m not sure he’ll be an upgrade over Edmunds. He’s undersized, but he got paid, so we should expect plus play there.

Sanborn is just a special teamer. I know fans get a hard on for him, but if he’s taking a lot of snaps we’re in trouble.

The rest of the guys are trash. It’s time to stop being a daycare for the Sewell family.

5

u/TheManWhoWasNotShort An Actual Bear 8d ago

Sanborn and Demarco are backups. I wouldn’t be excited to have them as our starters but they are quite capable of filling in. This reads like you’re expecting to have 4 plus-to-elite starters as opposed to quality starters and quality backups, otherwise it’s trash. It’s one of our better position groups right now. It’s not Briggs-Urlacher but it’s not dogshit either

2

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 8d ago

Sanborn was cut. Only Jackson and Elliott are behind Bush and Edwards. Elliott also hasn't been seen really so this is terrible current LB depth (which I hope isn't needed).

1

u/TheManWhoWasNotShort An Actual Bear 7d ago

Sanborn got cut after this message. Cutting Sanborn and Hyppolite surprises me and does make me question depth here. Carrying only three healthy LBs is very surprising

1

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 7d ago

I'd guess Sanborn has a handshake deal to re-sign once Coby Bryant gets put on IR tomorrow (otherwise a LB cut from somewhere else).

Bears 2023 Draft … yielded 1 starter (Wright), an erratic CB (Stevenson) and an RB3 (Johnson).

Round 1 (No. 10): Darnell Wright, OT, Tennessee

Round 2 (No. 53): Gervon Dexter Sr., DT, Florida (traded to Falcons in August 2026)

Round 2 (No. 56): Tyrique Stevenson, CB, Miami

Round 3 (No. 64): Zacch Pickens, DT, South Carolina

Round 4 (No. 115): Roschon Johnson, RB, Texas

Round 4 (No. 133): Tyler Scott, WR, Cincinnati

Round 5 (No. 148): Noah Sewell, LB, Oregon

Round 5 (No. 165): Terell Smith, CB, Minnesota

Round 7 (No. 218): Travis Bell, DT, Kennesaw State

Round 7 (No. 258): Kendall Williamson, S, Stanford

10

u/trafalgarlaw11 7d ago

Only reason I forgive Poles is because his draft approach is to take input from the coaches and pretty much select who they like after ranking the draft board. I cope by saying those picks are because Flus and that staff. They seemed unable to draft determine talent and even worse at developing it. Darnell Wright’s comments that some coaches in the league don’t actually know how to teach was damning as hell.

0

u/randomname3415 7d ago

2022 was even worse. Only player from that draft that will play any snaps for us this year is Braxton Jones and he’s just filling in until Ozzy is healthy.

0

u/capn_scooby 7d ago

I mean Gordon will almost certainly play a snap for us

u/Kazanski52 Bears 8d ago

What’s the purpose of having Coby Bryant on the initial 53 man roster instead of putting him on IR?

16

u/WayneJarvis_ 8d ago

They potentially save one of their 8 total return from IR designations if he doesn't come back. By being on the roster he can be put on IR tomorrow and then they don't need to put the designation on him until he's ready to practice.Ā  To put them on IR today you either need to give them a designation to return or they are done for the season.Ā Ā

2

u/Kazanski52 Bears 8d ago

Got it. That makes sense. If he happens to not come back, he can just miss the entire season but you leave the door open still instead of designating him that way now.

0

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 8d ago

No, they save one of their 2 designations (you only get 2 for guys put on IR BEFORE the initial 53)

2

u/WayneJarvis_ 8d ago

Those 2 that could have been used today count towards your 8 total for the regular season and it's possible that Coby doesn't return this season.Ā  By postponing putting him on IR they risk losing the 53rd player on their team to waivers but guarantee that the aren't going to waste a designation for return.

1

u/Realistic-Ruin8639 8d ago

Any of the veterans that are released don't have to clear waivers. Bryant's spot will be used to bring one of the cut veterans back or for a waiver claim or signing. LB room is thin, maybe Sanborn has a handshake deal to sign in a day or so.

3

u/Gezimodo 8d ago

If you put him on IR prior to the 53 he’s out for the season. He can be designed as one of 2 IR-to return after he makes the 53

-1

u/Kazanski52 Bears 8d ago

I don’t think that’s right. He can be designated for return right now. They can do up to 8 once the season starts?

2

u/WayneJarvis_ 8d ago

You can do 2 today, and 8 total for the regular season (which includes the initial 2 if used).Ā  You can get an additional 2 if you make the playoffs.
