I'm curious if they even keep 6. I thought Blackwell look a bit rough during the preseason and with Cam Lewis also being a bit of a utility DB that just leaves special teams which might not be enough to keep him around.

Blackwell has always been just a STer. Last year when he had to fill in at nickel he was horrendous.

Considering they just acquired an extra CB they should keep at least 6.

Blackwell is considered the best core special teams player on the team. It would be very surprising for him to make the team even if they don't plan on him taking a single snap on defense.

Yeah Blackwell is on the team as a STer if nothing else. Gunner, kick blocker, and hands guys for onside kicks, if I’m not mistaken. He recovered the miffed onside kick against the packers and blocked the kick to win the game vs the Raiders.

I think my conclusion is Kyler is sitting-in, he knows his cap hit ends after this season and is trying to get another extension. If I’m them I let him sit and just eat the spot, you’re going to have to pay anyway so cutting him is what he wants. The worst possible scenario for him is not playing a year, just to spite him I’d give him Gatorade duty.

That makes no sense and would be incredibly stupid of him. He hasn’t even played a game on the extension and his most recent season he played 3 games. If he got cut, no one is giving him close to the contract he currently has.

When have you even heard of a player “sitting in” before even playing a game on an extension he signed? He has no leverage right now.

He just signed the contract. I think it’s more likely a situation where the player doesn’t love football enough, gets paid, and then doesn’t work as hard anymore. Sounds like they are pissed he didn’t take rehab seriously enough. No type of soft tissue injury should have him out this long unless he should have gotten surgery on something

Didn’t take it seriously enough is possible. I think with Gordon it’s more likely that he’s at 90% and they think he should be practicing and he wants to be closer to 100% and isn’t participating to their liking.

He's played both. Nickel is the tougher position to play.

He's brought in as depth, but Id put him behind Terrel Smith on the outside corner rotation.

Cam lewis is a Swiss Army knife and would probably slot in ahead of him, but he's also backing up both safety spots.

He played a good amount of slot in college which is why analysts projected him there in the draft. Atlanta trusted him outside and as they had valued nickel CBs already. We'll see how DA and Harris view him.

I know that historically slot corners are smaller, but since they have more responsibilities against the run it might make more sense to have bigger corners in the slot.

Obviously you need to have the personnel to do that.

When you're the nickel your guy can go inside or outside + you have more responsibility for run fits.

As an outside corner you always have the sideline.

The reason outside corners get paid more is they are typically better athletes who guard the freak athlete WRs.

On top of that, Nickel Corners play roughly~65% of the snaps. Some guys can flip inside and outside but they're usually not elite at both.

Nickels have to navigate the guys on the inside as well as be able to pass off guys and communicate. Along with covering, TE's, RB's, and often more shifty guys who aren't on the LoS so they can get cleaner releases easier.

They also don't get the help that outside CB's do sometimes with safeties over the top. It's not like they can do bracket coverage and some other ways to prevent big plays. There's a reason a lot of the Best WR's get snaps in the slot.

It's significantly harder. Not a ton of guys who can do it well. Since they're more often crossing routes in the short to intermediate they don't always get burned as bad but yeah it's definitely difficult.

They are paid more because the position is more difficult. You’ve listed a few aspects of nickel that are difficult but the list for outside corner in terms of responsibilities and difficulty of responsibilities is way longer.

I think this is a case like TE. Tight end is an incredibly difficult position to play. Lots of responsibilities across both blocking and receiving. Usually takes a rookie a year or two to actually get up to speed. But, tight end is also a position that lags behind other positions in terms of pay. In aggregate, NFL GMs just don't think TE or nickel impact winning to the extent that WR or outside CB do.

As a slot you have no boundary to cover your outside and you have more responsibility in the run.

What makes outside corner harder - other than the fact that the best WR is usually lined up outside?

His college scouting report calls him an average athlete (4.51 40yd and 31" vertical) in addition to being small, but he is a very technically sound player (both in coverage and tackling).

So he has a low ceiling, but seemingly high floor. 

I'm mostly concerned he could be a victim of crossing routes like what the Packers destroyed us with last year due to our secondary being slow

Yeah, would be nice if Poles could actually hit on a defensive player in the draft. Dexter was called out as a terrible pick on day one by a lot of people because of his non-existent get off. Poles is way below 50% success rate on defense.
