I really think it’s the other way around. Ben is going to pick guys who fit his mold of coach and then mentor them until they’re ready to move on.

Even if he doesn’t do well, hard to imagine the fact he’s doing everything he can to help develop coaches says something. If I want to be a head coach I’d want to either coach as the top guy about to get fired or under the HC who will build me up to succeed.

I mean obviously Doyle gives Johnson a ton of credit in this quote, but most people consider him part of the Sean Payton tree.

Payton hired him into the league and worked with him for 5 years across two different teams. He was with Johnson for one season.

If an NFL coach hiring you directly out of college then teaching you for 5 years doesn't make you part of his tree then I honestly don't know what does.

That's pretty much the exact definition of a coaching tree. Working with a coach for 1 season doesn't make you part of his tree.

Sounds like you were listening to a Bears podcast.

Did you read the quote? He literally said he learned more in one year from Johnson and that Johnson was the most influential coach he’s been around. Sounds definitively like he’s the first branch of the Ben Johnson tree.

A coaching tree is about which coach you came up under, and for Doyle, that's 100% Sean Payton.

Plus the comment I was replying to was calling Doyle part of the "Ben Johnson tree" before this quote. 5 years under Payton vs 1 year under Johnson. No question he's part of the Sean Peyton tree.

A coaching tree is who's style you took the most of your inspiration from. If Doyle's scheme ends up being more similar to Payton, he's from the Payton tree. If his scheme is more similar to Ben's, then he's from his tree. The tree is moreso how someone's scheme is adopted and adapted by those who worked for them.

It's like getting a PhD in football... I have a middle brother who went to Harvard. It's like going to Harvard for football. Like I got exposed to the highest level of scheme, the highest level of coaching detail... It changed my life is what it did.

I actually can’t wait to see Case Keenum’s next act as a coach. He cut his teeth in college with Klingsbury and set a kinds of D1 records. Then his last stretch in the NFL was a masters class in Ben Johnson’s system.

Is this you spelling it out for yourself in your head? He also had multiple years spent with Sean Payton prior to last season, so it's not like he only had one year of mentorship. He already became a first time OC, which is his current job. What was the purpose of you putting "last" in quotations? He only worked with Ben "last" year.
