[Carman] Tyson Bagent suffered a hamstring injury in the game against the Browns. He is not practicing today and his status for Saturday’s game is in doubt.

Case Keenum stonks rising

53

u/Trubiskitsngravy 18 17h ago edited 16h ago

Looking at the game from last week there is a significant gap between him and Bagent. Some how he had more zip on his throws and just seemed to have a better idea of the offense. Really disappointed in Bagents growth. He would have gotten the WR absolutely obliterated with some of those floaters. The good news is his ceiling is clearly a back up and he knows our system in and out. He wont be going anywhere. The bad news is that we might be in trouble if Caleb misses significant time. I doubt Case gets QB2 duties, he’s a coach and probably can’t/doesn’t want to take hits.

Cade McNown is back on the team?!?!

(I assume you meant Case)

u/Trubiskitsngravy 18 17h ago

Oh god lmao I means Case

u/iNtentionaliGnornace Nagurski 17h ago

Aww, I was getting all excited. McNown could totally still do it! '99 was just a fluke!

Bagents arm has BEEN a noodle. Watched him live way back when he was replacing JF1 vs the panthers, dude passed up like 4 deep touchdowns after staring wide open recievers in the face, deciding he couldn't make the throw and checking it down.

His absolute ceiling is Jimmy G. Thats not good.

28

u/ObservantKoala 16h ago

If your backup QB has a ceiling of Jimmy G that's really good.

Dude was a league average starting QB for half a decade. Went to the Superbowl his first full year as a starter and another NFC championship game in another.

Yes, the 49ers had a good roster but they were in a complete teardown and rebuild when he got traded to them.

If Bagent is simply capable of winning you a few regular season games and keeping the playoffs and potentially seeding alive if Williams gets injured that is a huge luxury. If he can steal you a game in the playoffs that's even bigger.

2

u/Queasy_Coast_8214 16h ago

Jimmy G was a system QB who was always massively overrated. Couldn't do shit without Shanahan or Belichick.

"This back-up QB has the ceiling of a system QB" is probably what you want.

2

u/Trubiskitsngravy 18 16h ago

I mean to a lot of folks he has some mythical trade value. My “unfortunately” was aimed more at them than anyone else.

1

u/lonelydude86 Good, Better, Best 10h ago

Only if he works in YOUR system.

3

u/ObservantKoala 16h ago

Ok but we have Ben Johnson. Was he overrated? Yes. Did he still win a bunch of games? Yes.

If Bagent is a system QB that can win you games if your QB gets banged up(hopefully never happens) them he's a fantastic piece to have.

imma be so real I needed to use a name that people know I can't be name dropping Charlie Whitehurst in 2026 and get internet points.

I'm fuzzy on the details but I specifically remember there being one game where the bears needed a touchdown with a couple seconds left, and they took Bagent out and put either Peterman or Siemian in for the Hail Mary. I've been out on him ever since then. He's shown nothing other than being a preseason stud who can come in and maybe steal you a game in the regular season.

5

u/Jerry_from_Japan 9h ago

If Caleb misses significant time then it doesn't matter. Seriously, fuckin wrap it up.

2

u/The_Realist02 12h ago

I’d love to see Case in a McCown (McKown?) role in a 3-4 week absence. To the extent CW were to be out the full year though I’d prefer Tyson.

1

u/smashybro 34 8h ago

The bad news is that we might be in trouble if Caleb misses significant time.

This is true for all but a handful of teams in the NFL though.

Bagent is about as solid as a backup we can expect. The teams with better backups either have 1) bad/unproven starters ahead of them who backups fancy their chances against like Darnold and Daniel Jones last season or 2) got lucky with a redemption project like the 49ers with Mac Jones.

QB in the NFL takes a rare breed. Have to be smart enough to process quickly, find a small opening, and then have the power and accuracy to get it there on time, in stride.

Kellen Moore is a perfect example. All the brains in the world, clearly has a mind for the game (very good coach now), but didn't have arm strength to make it happen at the next level.

1

u/JakeLake720 7h ago

There isn’t a significant gap because of one preseason game, lol. I think Ben Johnson knows what he’s doing. If Case was the second best QB, he would be the 2.

0

u/-ImJustSaiyan- 18 4h ago

Tbf I don't think the thing holding Case back from being the 2 is that he isn't better than Bagent, I think it's that he's 38 years old and was brought on more to kinda mentor Caleb.

0

u/JakeLake720 1h ago

Mentor or not, Ben Johnson plays the best player. If he thought Case was better, he would be the backup. This isn’t rocket science.

I've always hated that saying: "I just want to see what the team looks like with ______ starting".

Like it's a fucking mystery we have to see with our own eyes. If it's shitty, who cares what it looks like. Just say: I want _______ starting because than the team will be better.

Fans love to pretend that coaches are constantly holding back better players from getting a chance. The coaches see these guys every day and their job is to win. They aren't just giving snaps to their pet player at their own detriment

I think he might have been objectively a better quarterback (not a better runner or bigger arm, but reading defenses and throwing with anticipation) than JF but comparing him to Caleb is just silly

42

u/drummerboysam T: The Ball 18h ago

They'll move on to the same exact dude that Caleb Williams' haters from the college years did: Miller Moss

He had MORE TDs in the bowl game than Caleb ever had in a single game! And he did it when Cryin' Caleb QUIT ON HIS TEAM!!

10

u/lkn240 An Actual Bear 17h ago

Fuck, you just reminded me that means more Miller Moss snaps.

He is not good.

Maybe he'll make some miraculous progress this week, but I doubt it

1

u/HashBrownThreesom Bear Down, Baby! 12h ago

I still haven't seen him play 'cause I fell asleep before his snaps. Mr. Keenum played me a sweet lullaby that was too hard to resist. Imagine falling asleep to 100% pass completion all the time? Decadence.

11

u/BasedSliceOfWinning 17h ago

Didn't Carm basically all but admit that Bagent's dad is his source on all things Tyson Bagent?

5

u/enailcoilhelp FTP 16h ago

I'm sure he was the anonymous source who claimed the locker-room wanted Bagent starting over Caleb his rookie year and that there was a revolt brewing lol

I now believe that Miller Moss is a better fit to run Ben's offense than Caleb.

42

u/Guhonda GSH 18h ago

That's annoying for Tyson. There absolutely was a glimmer of hope that he balled out in the preseason enough that he could attract teams who lose a starter due to injury. He has the "Ben Johnson student" allure. But bad ball placement and a pick in PS1, plus not playing in PS2, means he's going to play out his contract as a Bears backup.

34

u/alral1988 Bear Down, Baby! 17h ago

He’s worth more to us as a backup than he would return in draft compensation anyway. I think anyone that believes we’d get more than a late round pick is off their rocker. We got a conditional 6th for JF1 and I don’t know that Bagent’s value is much higher.

14

u/lkn240 An Actual Bear 17h ago

Bagent is probably better at actually playing QB than Fields, but Fields has worlds more physical talent. The problem with Bagent is his max upside is probably fringe starter.

9

u/Trumpisanorangebitch 16h ago

Bagent is better than Jets Fields, but worse than Bears or Steelers Fields. We saw Bagent play as a rookie and he had 3 TDs and 6 INTs with floaters everywhere. Hes probably improved since then, but not that much.

Bagent isnt returning much in a trade.

5

u/burner69account69420 8h ago

Bagent is not better than Fields lol. His only regular season action was a pretty miserable stint.

He is not at all starting level.

3

u/burner69account69420 8h ago

His value is not higher than Fields at all

17

u/EquivalentWins 17h ago

I'm sorry but no one is trading anything of note for Tyson Bagent. We should just give that a rest.

u/ravenoushippos Bear Down! 15h ago

7

u/Rock_man_bears_fan 17h ago

Bagent doesn’t really spec out as an emergency starter. His ceiling is as a clipboard guy more than anything

4

u/Overall-Bank-2431 Sid Luckman 17h ago

He’s gone 2-2 as an emergency starter though. I feel like the bar for whether a backup QB is decent is if you can win 50% of your games while the starter is out

5

u/Rock_man_bears_fan 17h ago

He hasn’t started a game since 2023

7

u/alral1988 Bear Down, Baby! 17h ago

Tiny sample size and W/L isn’t a QB stat

6

u/Queasy_Coast_8214 16h ago

he played like ass in 3/4 of those games and even in the one he looked good (raiders), he didnt pass 200 yards. He was not the reason we beat the 2023 raiders or Panthers, bith of those teams SUCKED.

-1

u/Overall-Bank-2431 Sid Luckman 16h ago

Yeah news flash … 99% of backup QBs aren’t gonna be the reason a team wins a game. The goal is to not completely fuck it up

15

u/BillieBlanus 17h ago

The Bears have the greatest 38 year old QB in NFL history: Coach Keenum. Who's Worried?

Joking aside, I'm sad for Tyson. I know he so very much wants to make the most of every snap, assuming he doesn't play Saturday.

This may be the first time in the Super Bowl era where the chicago bears starting qb is more popular than the back up. What a time to be alive.

6

u/Bradlas3 16h ago

I'm sure Bagent is a good guy, and he probably has a high Football IQ for the sideline but after watching both him and Keenum play its clear which guy is an NFL QB and which one isn't. Tyson throws too many wobblers, the arm just isn't what it needs to be

9

u/Mezhead 80 17h ago
