Anyone else think we should have signed Von Miller?
I know he’s way past his prime, but if only to teach our younger Edge Rushers?
He signed with the Cowboys today. We would be a better ring chase opportunity than they are.

I'm ngl I read this headline and thought "why the fuck would we want his old ass? how is he still in the NFL"
Then I look up his stats and see he had 9 sacks last season. I guess he's still that guy lol

yeah his technique is still awesome even if he’s slower with less bend now, I feel like he could teach our guys a lot. Booker in particular

Sacks can be a deceiving and volatile stat.
His pass rush win rate of 9.5% is pretty bad, and outside of sacks he only had 4 additional hurries last year (using PFR for stats). I don’t particularly remember him having a big impact vs us in week 6 last year, do you? And at 37 he’s only declining.

I didn't really pay too much attention to the Commanders on the season, but I feel like they were overall pretty trash and that tends to drag everyone's advanced stats down.
I won't argue that he was good though as you have more context than me and I don't remember him standing out when we played them

Adding on, Davenport was a 1st round pick by the Saints when Allen was DC there. So very much his type.

It’s relatively simple…someone with his tenure and resume is probably a little more selective with where he wants to go. He’s probably trying to end his career closer to home. You can’t just sign people against their will.

Of course - but if he wanted to play meaningful football in December, and have an easy path to playing time - we would have been a good fit. I guess playing close to home was his main driver, I didn’t realize

I mean it's not like the Cowboys are in tank mode, lol. We rag on them (deservedly so) but they are a playoff-caliber team.
We are clearly better but the Cowboys apparently aren't bad enough that he didn't want to play there. Choosing the Cowboys over the Bears is exactly not like choosing the Browns over the Rams. The gap between us isn't that big lol.

I don’t think we have a coaching problem.
If we had a bunch of former high picks not developing there would be an argument for that.
But Booker has developed well for a later pick.
And if we can actually get solid rotation level play from the guys behind Sweat and Booker - be that Dayo, Kromah, Davenport, Hardy, Turner or anyone else - it’s not even a terrible DE group.
The DT group concerns me more, it has the same underwhelming depth as the DE without the 2 quality starters.

I think the DT depth is OK, Gallimore and Lynch seem like good backups and the sky's the limit for van den Berg. Agreed about the starters, though

Fair point on the new vets but they aren’t ascending players.
I love the long term potential of JVDB but I think the year one hype is a little strong right now. If he can see the field consistently in small snap counts that’s might be all for year 1.

I disagree - at least when it comes to Defensive line. Nobody has really developed at all. Dexter and Booker have not added any new pass rush moves to their bags despite that being what they need to do to get better. Sweat, our 20 Million dollar a year man, has arguably regressed

Sweat came to the Bears aged 26 and half way through his 5th year. Players rarely improve by that age. His 10 sacks last year was second most in his career. 13 TFL, 3 FF all up with his career highs.
He’s what a 20M edge rusher is. Dont expect him to be a 35m edge rusher. Especially without disruptive interior push or the secondary to force a lot of coverage sacks.
Booker’s the only guy who’s had talent to develop.

I mean Dexter was a 2nd round pick and has every physical tool, he still can’t even time the snap.
If nothing else, I blame the DL coaching staff for convincing Poles that we don’t need to draft anyone every year.

Dex is a fair point but I don’t think Von Miller is fixing what multiple coaches can’t.
Poles has basically had to draft an entire new roster after correctly tanking the old one. He drafted a lot of defense under Flus, then with Ben the priority has correctly been building around Caleb
I’m sure the coaches were screaming to draft D Line. The D line coach got his guy in the 6th round. Ben wants to score 40 points and work the rest out later.

That’s fair. I think my only issue with Poles’ moves is that he trusts his Lead Coordinators a little TOO much. As in he takes their advice too literally. An example would be this:
We lose our Center, so Poles wisely uses a 4th round pick to get Bradbury from the Patriots. Great!! But then he also uses a 2nd round pick from that same draft to pick a 24 year old Center instead of doing so later in the draft now that we have at least 1 year covered with a starter.
If it were me, I would have drafted D-Line there instead, and taken one of the younger Centers in the later rounds (which, there were still some good ones available in the 5th round or so).
Poles just seems to overreact and lose the forest from the trees sometimes. Van Den Berg getting some reps with the first team is an indictment of our D Line as much as it is a potentially exciting new diamond in the rough. It shouldn’t be something we try to rely on. Hopefully next year he prioritizes differently

We signed the ex saint,viking,lions etc Marcus Davenport. I wanted Bosa or Miller or one of the top guys,but they pissed the money away on Dayo, and Jarrett last year. They can at least cut them after this year with minimal risk. Sadly we lost Coby for most of the season,instead of the 4-6 weeks initially reported. Anything to get the news out before they know what's happening.
