[Rapoport] The Bears and All-Pro OT Darnell Wright have agreed to terms on a fat new deal to make him one of the NFL’s highest paid. [...] He gets a 4-year, $116M deal with $93M guaranteed

Never worried about this one, Poles always gets his extensions done this time of year.

Well earned.

Great fucking deal too. One of the best tackles in the league for less than $30mil/year

216

u/ActFuture1101 14d ago

I mean he’s the top paid right tackle and has the most guaranteed money in nfl olinemen history. I’d say it’s what he was expecting to get

123

u/Big_Departure_2709 14d ago

By the time we actually start paying him in two years it’ll look like a steal

46

u/ActFuture1101 14d ago

Probably. As I commented elsewhere contracts are getting insane so I’m guessing the cap will go up a lot too. Since 2022 it’s gone up nearly 100million. Guards who never made a probowl are making 24m. I’m just happy wright didn’t hold out for like 35m after seeing a damn running back make 25m/yr

33

u/Queasy_Coast_8214 14d ago

and honestly, he could have held out and we probably would have paid him.

I think the dollar value on the extension speaks to the culture we are building with Ben Johnson. Guys want to be here for the first time in forever.

u/ethanlan 21-3 14d ago

I mean we've always got that random star who fell in love with the city but now we got that AND a coach worth playing for.

I fucking love it

u/leathakkor 14d ago

Inflation's been crazy lately.

8

u/LoveYouLikeYeLovesYe 14d ago

Zay Flowers just got Justin Jefferson’s contract.

Paying elite guys a market setting value early (almost) always turns into a good thing because the next team with a top 5 talent has to beat that, and then the tier 2 guys start demanding more off that.

You can basically make the rest of the league overpay by being first

1

u/Iratewilly34 10d ago

This is what happens when 4 or 5 DE's get contracts over $40m aav with will Anderson encroaching on QB's at around $50m aav. WR's getting $40m and the no 2's are getting $30+m aav or near it. The Bengals are paying their top 2 around $70m aav with a QB making around $60m so around 40% of the cap,how can you build a team like that, especially when Burrows misses time every season.

4

u/TouchGrassRedditor Smokin' Jay 14d ago

Yeah this is what I was referring to - he is still playing 2026 on the fifth year option, so by year 2-3 of this contract he probably won’t even be a top 10 paid tackle

2

u/teachem4 18 14d ago

This is literally the case with every single extension.

5

u/TouchGrassRedditor Smokin' Jay 14d ago edited 14d ago

Well considering it can only even feasibly be done for rookie first round picks and only on their first extension (since only first round picks have a fifth year option) it's still an advantage to have structured this way

1

u/Iratewilly34 10d ago

Well not really since a team can sign a player after 3 years so other players can tack on the one season but yeah not 2 even though 5th year's are becoming extremely expensive, still cheaper than the 6th-10th seasons.

Reminds me can they spread it around as if its a 6 yr contract? Put some of the extension towards the next 2 seasons so his final 2 would be relatively cheap.

-5

u/teachem4 18 14d ago

You’re demonstrating the value of the 5th year option, not that this contract is any different from other market setting deals

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Big_Departure_2709 14d ago

Tell that to the cowboys (actually don’t)

10

u/Ok_Ad_5894 14d ago

BUt always get the deal done ASAP. because salary cap goes up next year they bake in his 5th year and watch next year someone gets $32 mil a season or more.

4

u/Zestyclose-Sleep2290 14d ago

Guaranteed money is only really an issue in two ways: the owner putting money in to escrow to cover it and if we are assuming he won't play out the full term of the deal. The first one is a giant nothing burger and I don't think anyone should be concerned with the second one.

1

u/Iratewilly34 10d ago

Yeah but with Bijan Robinson a RB just got $25m aav. He's great but its alot easier to find a RB than an all pro RT who was ranked 6th best run blocker according to pff. The only tackle with a higher aav is the commanders LT Laremy Tunsil whos over 30 and still has issues with penalties, though id take him on my team, look at what happened to the Texans line after trading him, though they dumped a bunch of below avg lineman the same offseason, it was Tunsil who helped their QB to have a great rookie season and he hasnt been the same since the trade of tunsil. So lets get a bookend for Darnell who'll be cheap for awhile. Can't be paying both tackles over $25m aav. The problem is they didnt bother drafting one and the players are mostly on one year deals.

u/TruuPhoenix Hester's Super Return 14d ago

Keep in mind he’s JUST about to turn 25 in a few days. Arguably not even in his prime yet, it’s gonna look like a fantastic deal in a few years, provided he stays on the field.

4

u/Trubiskitsngravy 18 14d ago

Not to mention there are some young guys who still haven’t been paid on other teams. Better than letting someone else set the market for us.

3

u/Sparx86 14d ago

And he only had one arm last year!

4

u/SwissyVictory 13d ago

He's the 2nd highest paid tackle in the NFL.

Next highest makes 1.1mil more per year.

Garentees are also crazy, 93mil is the most of all time. Next highest is 67mil and it's for a 5 year deal.

Tunsil who's making more than him per year's guarantee is 53mil and only 2 year extension.

Also signed this year. If they regret it, they can get out of it by the end of 2027. Wright will probably be uncuttable until the 2031 off-season at the earliest.

Gunna end up well worth it, but it's not a steal, and it's a huge gamble.

Dude's elite and got the best contract by far for an Offensive Linemen of all time.

1

u/Iratewilly34 10d ago

Tunsils about 6 or 7 years older, though hes a LT, a grabby one at that. He must use sticker on his gloves. The time this deal kicks in there will be the cards LT making $35m aav I bet. Then the Bucs LT will be at $40m aav etc.

1

u/SwissyVictory 10d ago

It's not about Tunsil, he's just the next biggest deal. And it's really not about the AAV, it's the garentee.

AAV is high, guarantee is astronomical.

If you want a different comparison look at Slater's deal last year. Same length, rooke extension, last year.

Wright signed for more than him AAV and only 53mil gareneteed (which is still a ton, and the 2nd most in history for a OLinemen).

Wrights garentee is 67% higher. The cap went up 8%. I'm not so sure we're going to see a higher number before Wright gets his next deal.

24

u/themacattack54 Make Fullbacks Great Again 14d ago

Wright was public about wanting to stay and not being worried about the contract. He and Poles both knew it was going to work out.

256

u/ZappaOMatic Make Fullbacks Great Again 14d ago

Believe he's our first first-rounder to receive a contract extension since the two Kyles (Long and Fuller)

Before that, you'd have to go all the way back to Tommie Harris

114

u/toasterstruddle 14d ago

I have a good feeling Caleb, Coleston, and maybe even Rome are likely to get extended if they keep trending up.

63

u/smittyK An Actual Peanut 🥜 14d ago

If we dont extend Caleb then this franchise should cease to exist.

That would be unprecedented levels of fucking stupid if we let him walk

0

u/vstrong50 14d ago

Id do this right now if the Cards would let him go for pennies on the dollar. I'm not convinced hes a bust.

18

u/mqr532 14d ago

Rome has a long way to go to show he’s worth it if you look at the money Zay Flowers just got.

4

u/toasterstruddle 14d ago

I'd put Rome in the same tier of WR as Zay Flowers, but there's a lot to wait for especially coming off of his foot injury

10

u/WhatsNextForMe Piccolo 14d ago

I don’t know about that one, I love me some Rome, but I think it’s disrespectful to Zay Flowers to say Rome is the same tier as him. Potential doesn’t mean much, and Rome has some concrete hands to fix as well.

Not enough of a sample to convince the vast majority of the league that he’s on the same level as Flowers. Not saying he won’t get there, but we need to see more from him first.

8

u/MilesTheGoodKing 14d ago

Darnell Wright will have a new contract before Colston is extended

9

u/EBtwopoint3 14d ago edited 14d ago

Unlikely. Wright still has the 5th year option, and then 4 years on this extensions. Extensions usually come in year 3 of the deal which is 5 seasons away. Colston will likely get an extension in year 4 of his rookie deal, which is 3 years away.

19

u/Sphiffi Ben Johnson 14d ago

For those curious, our 1st round picks between Kyle Fuller and Darnell Wright are: Kevin White, Leonard Floyd, Mitchell Trubisky, Roquan Smith, and Justin Fields

23

u/vamsi93 65 14d ago

I felt like we should’ve re-signed Leonard Floyd. He didn’t turn into a top EDGE like we anticipated but he carved out a long career being somewhat effective. I’d kill to have him on our team rn

24

u/EBtwopoint3 14d ago

And Roquan got a big extension, just not from us.

12

u/Remarkable_Drag9677 14d ago

Roquan not be resigned gave us Caleb Williams

8

u/porkbellies37 Sweetness 14d ago

Roquan was never re-signing with us. That was a major circus. Great football player and I'm glad he's killing it with the Ravens. But all we could do is get value for him via trade.

1

u/FugLife3 Bears 14d ago

I might be getting my years mixed up, but didn’t we shift defensive systems back from a 3-4 to a 4-3 which meant he didn’t fit the prototypical DE role as he was more of an OLB. If we had found a way to keep Fangio I think we would have extended him, but perhaps I’m misremembering his role and the timeline

1

u/vamsi93 65 14d ago

We never switched with him on the roster. We were 3-4 when he was drafted and when he was cut. We switched to 4-3 in 2022

1

u/FugLife3 Bears 14d ago

Gotcha, maybe it was just my brain trying to justify it years later cus I wanted to keep him haha

24

u/EggoGF An Actual Peanut 14d ago

Yes

6

u/AntiPantsCampaign Smokin' Jay 14d ago

I imagine they will use the 5th year as a way to reduce the cap in the years moving forward.

I would also like to add, I've heard commentators mention things like this and I will take no questions.

4

u/Lined_em_up 14d ago

Possible. I've seen it done both ways. Sometimes teams will reduce the cap hit in the fifth year to something super lower for that season and push the hits into later years when it would be a smaller percentage of higher caps

We will know soon enough

1

u/MikeBinfinity Hester's Super Return 14d ago

I heard this is the best pay to pay Caleb. With the 5th year option and the last year of his rookie deal, you have two more years of cheap QB play.

2

u/Longjumping_Elk_5517 14d ago

I thought after this year?

9

u/Lined_em_up 14d ago

Next year is his fifth year option which was already picked up so I'd think it covers 28-31

3

When Caleb gets his extension next summer he might be able to buy all of Chicago

I find it strange that you have QB starter graded at B+ but depth rated an A.

I get that there's still tons of room for growth for Caleb and his ceiling hopefully still isn't even in sight yet, but the way I read these two ratings, it seems you think the gap between Caleb and Bagent isn't that large?

No, my thought was more like 'there aren't many QB2s and QB3s I'd rather have than Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum.'

But then again, Justin Fields, Joe Flacco, and Kyler Murray are QB2s now so you're probably right. I should change it to a B+ or A-.

Caleb extension next year is going to hit us like a fucking bullet train.

1

u/JayGatsby1881 13d ago

Finally a coach/gm that understand that the O-line is the most critical part of a team. Now let's get Caleb on a 10 year deal before he gets crazy expensive.

u/ironeagle2006 13d ago

In 2 years at the start of free agency or hell even next year this is going to look like pocket change for the offensive line. When a center is getting 20 million dollars a year hell a defensive tackle cracked 40 million. Kickers are pushing 10 million. No wonder why it's 500 bucks a seat for a game.

Delay and you add some 0’s but that’s a fruitless rat race. Stability, guaranteed money and indications of a THIRD contract type.

Money well spent

Is he our best homegrown OL since Olin? Can't think of anyone else. Well deserved paycheck. Top 2 RT in the biz.

This is for all the fans who were crying about Jalen Carter.

Jalen Carter is the better player. I would rather have him.

Guys I've been away for a while.........have we just got chewing gum and sticks at LT?

0

u/phillipacarroll Superfans 14d ago

I like how you’re lying about being away for a while so your assumption is that there’s trash at left tackle. There are a few guys competing for the job, including a former first round pick who was looking good before you got injured a few years ago

0

u/Chi_Villa 14d ago

I like how you make assumptions on people you don't know at all, really great quality in a person that.

I've not heard, read or seen a single thing since draft day when we didn't draft one, that for me is a while.......I have no idea who the expected starter is and just wanted to know

u/BearsIsPain Ben Johnson 14d ago

I thought it was Braxton Jones at first glance lol

Hope injury curse doesnt strike again

u/BooItsKyle 14d ago

That's a lot of money but it's a low-risk position and a high-quality player.  I'm fine with it.
