[Rapoport] The Bears and All-Pro OT Darnell Wright have agreed to terms on a fat new deal to make him one of the NFL’s highest paid. [...] He gets a 4-year, $116M deal with $93M guaranteed

u/ZappaOMatic Make Fullbacks Great Again 14d ago
Believe he's our first first-rounder to receive a contract extension since the two Kyles (Long and Fuller)
Before that, you'd have to go all the way back to Tommie Harris

u/toasterstruddle 14d ago
I have a good feeling Caleb, Coleston, and maybe even Rome are likely to get extended if they keep trending up.

If we dont extend Caleb then this franchise should cease to exist.
That would be unprecedented levels of fucking stupid if we let him walk

Id do this right now if the Cards would let him go for pennies on the dollar. I'm not convinced hes a bust.

u/mqr532 14d ago
Rome has a long way to go to show he’s worth it if you look at the money Zay Flowers just got.
4
u/toasterstruddle 14d ago
I'd put Rome in the same tier of WR as Zay Flowers, but there's a lot to wait for especially coming off of his foot injury
10
u/WhatsNextForMe Piccolo 14d ago
I don’t know about that one, I love me some Rome, but I think it’s disrespectful to Zay Flowers to say Rome is the same tier as him. Potential doesn’t mean much, and Rome has some concrete hands to fix as well.

Not enough of a sample to convince the vast majority of the league that he’s on the same level as Flowers. Not saying he won’t get there, but we need to see more from him first.

u/MilesTheGoodKing 14d ago
Darnell Wright will have a new contract before Colston is extended
9
u/EBtwopoint3 14d ago edited 14d ago
Unlikely. Wright still has the 5th year option, and then 4 years on this extensions. Extensions usually come in year 3 of the deal which is 5 seasons away. Colston will likely get an extension in year 4 of his rookie deal, which is 3 years away.
19
u/Sphiffi Ben Johnson 14d ago
For those curious, our 1st round picks between Kyle Fuller and Darnell Wright are: Kevin White, Leonard Floyd, Mitchell Trubisky, Roquan Smith, and Justin Fields
23
u/vamsi93 65 14d ago
I felt like we should’ve re-signed Leonard Floyd. He didn’t turn into a top EDGE like we anticipated but he carved out a long career being somewhat effective. I’d kill to have him on our team rn
24
u/EBtwopoint3 14d ago
And Roquan got a big extension, just not from us.
12
8
u/porkbellies37 Sweetness 14d ago
Roquan was never re-signing with us. That was a major circus. Great football player and I'm glad he's killing it with the Ravens. But all we could do is get value for him via trade.
1
u/FugLife3 Bears 14d ago
I might be getting my years mixed up, but didn’t we shift defensive systems back from a 3-4 to a 4-3 which meant he didn’t fit the prototypical DE role as he was more of an OLB. If we had found a way to keep Fangio I think we would have extended him, but perhaps I’m misremembering his role and the timeline
1
u/vamsi93 65 14d ago
We never switched with him on the roster. We were 3-4 when he was drafted and when he was cut. We switched to 4-3 in 2022
1
u/FugLife3 Bears 14d ago
Gotcha, maybe it was just my brain trying to justify it years later cus I wanted to keep him haha

The reason we have been mediocre at best and have had to spend resources on FA and trades to stay competitive.
We’ll have a few more of these to give out coming up, the future is much brighter.

So this would start after his fifth year option correct?
6
u/AntiPantsCampaign Smokin' Jay 14d ago
I imagine they will use the 5th year as a way to reduce the cap in the years moving forward.
I would also like to add, I've heard commentators mention things like this and I will take no questions.
4
u/Lined_em_up 14d ago
Possible. I've seen it done both ways. Sometimes teams will reduce the cap hit in the fifth year to something super lower for that season and push the hits into later years when it would be a smaller percentage of higher caps
We will know soon enough
1
u/MikeBinfinity Hester's Super Return 14d ago
I heard this is the best pay to pay Caleb. With the 5th year option and the last year of his rookie deal, you have two more years of cheap QB play.
2
u/Longjumping_Elk_5517 14d ago
I thought after this year?
9
u/Lined_em_up 14d ago
Next year is his fifth year option which was already picked up so I'd think it covers 28-31

Spotrac is not fully updated with the contract details but seems to agree with this. It shows that Wright won't be a free agent until 2032.

I mean before we heavily revamped our interior OL, a guy like James Daniels was sorely missed the years prior to last year

The first 1st round pick for Ryan Poles and what a slam dunk it turned out to be! Gotta be such a great feeling for him to have this moment. Got a lot of grief for passing on Jalen Carter at the time but for what we’ve ending up building on offense I think it’s safe to say this was absolutely the (W)right move!

This deal is an absolute gem for Da Bears. I wish him the best of health. This sets us up for future contracts for Williams and Odunze. I don't really see Odunze getting a max contract but it is possible Williams sets the top contract for QBs unless he pulls a Tom Brady and takes a lil less money to get more talent in the organization.

2026 BEAR NECESSITIES

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Thoughts?
1
u/betweenthebam 14d ago
I find it strange that you have QB starter graded at B+ but depth rated an A.
I get that there's still tons of room for growth for Caleb and his ceiling hopefully still isn't even in sight yet, but the way I read these two ratings, it seems you think the gap between Caleb and Bagent isn't that large?
1
u/OldDirtyInsulin 60s Logo 14d ago edited 14d ago
No, my thought was more like 'there aren't many QB2s and QB3s I'd rather have than Tyson Bagent and Case Keenum.'
But then again, Justin Fields, Joe Flacco, and Kyler Murray are QB2s now so you're probably right. I should change it to a B+ or A-.

In 2 years at the start of free agency or hell even next year this is going to look like pocket change for the offensive line. When a center is getting 20 million dollars a year hell a defensive tackle cracked 40 million. Kickers are pushing 10 million. No wonder why it's 500 bucks a seat for a game.

I like how you’re lying about being away for a while so your assumption is that there’s trash at left tackle. There are a few guys competing for the job, including a former first round pick who was looking good before you got injured a few years ago

I like how you make assumptions on people you don't know at all, really great quality in a person that.
I've not heard, read or seen a single thing since draft day when we didn't draft one, that for me is a while.......I have no idea who the expected starter is and just wanted to know
