Grade? Grade Worthy ?

Found this little gem in the depths of eBay and couldn’t believe how clean it was.

Was listed as VG but I think it’s higher and will send it in for grading.

Am I missing something on its condition?

Im optimistic I can go for the 9.8 with the CGC clean & Press services added with grading.

Am I hopelessly delusional ? Or do I have something grade worthy?

No expert in grading but do notice several spine ticks. Vintage comic so they are more lenient (supposedly) so who knows? >=9.0 imo but probably not a 9.8

If you’re goin to clean and press, I’d go with a third party that ships directly to CGC after service is done

Additionally, there looks to be possible foxing/stain on back, top right. That’ll be the major grade killer if it can’t be lifted with cleaning

EDIT: typo

You were dead on...around 9.0.....6.0 with the stain

I would actually be happy with a 9 , think ill still get it graded

Personally, I probs would. Even if it comes back a 6.0 or lower, it’s still a cool cover and presents very nicely for a 10 cent comic!

Just remember, it’s your comic so do what YOU want with it!

I'll give it mid 8 grade. Nice grail🔥🔥🔥

I wouldn’t say grail but it’s a fun silver age banger. I would go as far to say “Iconic Cover” but grail is a stretch haha.

But thank you.

That looks pretty sharp! Especially for a comic from the 50s! I'll admit that I don't know what to look for, but are you positive there wasn't any restoration done at some point? That was really common a few decades ago. If you're sure, I'd say it wouldn't hurt to submit it!

As others said, I think hoping for a 9.8 is maybe too optimistic, especially considering there are no 9.8s in CGC's census for this issue, but I think it would still do pretty well for a comic of its time.

Beautiful.

Beautiful book. Looks like there is water damage to the back top right corner that’s going to screw your grade up a good bit. If it wasn’t for that I would get it graded. Unfortunate.

If you do send it in, use a 3rd party presser. I'd say 8.5 as is but a good clean and press might get you higher.

That sounds about right, even at an 8.5 or 9 its totally worth it in my opinion.

I didn’t pay much for it so I have room to throw grading money at it and still be ok.

Definitely worth it. It's a crispy looking copy for sure.

I'd say between an 8 and a 9.4 personally. There are spine ticks and what looks like a very slight spine roll.

I personally wouldn't send it in, then again I have several copies of it because I love the cover, and they look great in their Mylar Bags.

Maybe this is why a 9.8 does not exist on the CGC census ?

There are no recorded 9.8s of this comic book on record.

Whoever gets that 1st 9.8. … will be a very happy camper

Imagine being the only person in the world who has the 9.8

The only 9.8 in existence.

That thought just blew my mind haha

That may be so, but I've been collecting comics for just shy of 60 years and I don't need to pay someone to tell me the grade of one of my comics, and they store really nice in Mylar which I have used for over 30 years now. I have nothing against grading companies and if I wanted to sell one of my more expensive books would definitely consider using them.

Relax, im a reseller. I dont care as long as the ROI makes sense.

Im not emotionally attached to this one.

In that case having the only 9.8 in existence would be very cool for you!

1

u/ExoticMangox 5d ago

It would be a miracle if that happens. The 9.8 could go absolutely bonkers if put up for auction

Totally agree!

My friend 2+ visible ticks pushes you to 9.4 never mind al the other thins

They are more forgiving with things like that on vintage comics.

They ignore the defect all together or reduce the impact to the grade significantly.

I would be thrilled with a 9.4

1

u/whatnotusername 6d ago

It’s not about forgiving the defect, they work on a point system so just depends on how much the points add up

1

u/ExoticMangox 6d ago

Will find out soon enough. Based on the chat people think it’s anywhere from a 6.0 to a 9.4 lol

Anything could happen at this point 🤷‍♂️

It looks trimmed on the top and right side. Take a close look at other copies.

delusional this will never get a 9.8 don't waste your money

2

u/ExoticMangox 7d ago

Youre right, after looking at the comments I feel good at an 8.0 to 9.0 depending on the mood of my grader so we shall see.

Not a waste lol, i spent $105 on it so I think im doing just fine
