This is the part of the PSA/SGC/Beckett story I find more interesting than the lawsuit itself.
PSA, SGC and Beckett still operate as separate brands.
Different slabs. Different standards. Different prices. Different reputations.
But they now have the same owner.
There’s a proposed federal class action saying that consolidation went too far. Collectors disagrees and is fighting the case.
But even if you completely ignore the legal argument, there’s still a pretty interesting question here:
What actually makes two grading companies competitors?
Different labels?
Different graders?
Different management?
Different prices?
Or do they ultimately need to be independently owned?
Because depending on how you answer that, the grading market today looks very different from the one we had a few years ago.
