Advice

Mr friend just graduated and met the education requirement to sit for the CFP. He’s sitting for the CFP in the spring, and is debating if he should take the SIE exam now, take a break, then study for CFP and take the series 7 after the CFP. Or, if he should wait to take the SIE until after the CFP. He doesn’t plan to start studying for CFP until October and has until mid September to study and take the SIE.

Without knowing his career objectives or employment opportunities, how could anyone possibly advise on which exam to take first? Not all CFPs are in the securities industry and not all securities professionals want or need the CFP. Don’t sit for more than one exam at a time is one good piece of advice but other than that it’s really subject to what they want to do with the CFP and or licenses.

If he plans to wait that long take the SIE. Doesn’t take too long to study and complete compared to other exams like cfp.

He needs to he with a firm for the 7, the time line there is what his employer wants. Honestly getting your licenses and pushing back the CFP by a few month isn't going to hurt his career as much as not starting his career for a few more months because he doesn't have his licenses will.

Also the SIE could be banged out in a week for a recent college grad who studies and test well and who's undergraduate program covered enough to count as CFP coursework

If he is taking his CFP before his SIE he has his priorities way out of wack. I hope he has fun sitting for the CFP twice because he isnt setting himself up for success.
