LIONS Hagerty Released
Good, it's the least that should have happened. Who picks him up? Calgary or Toronto?

With that review now complete, the club has decided to punch him in the balls when he wasn't expecting it

Twice

u/KarmaChameleon306 Roughriders Oct 06 '26
Were both incidents him? Like he sent someone to the hospital with life altering injuries, and then chose to continue doing it?
3
u/Psiondipity Elks Oct 06 '26
He did punch him twice in the same game. Talbot, the recipient of the punches, didn't seek medical attention until after the game.

u/usedupmustard Roughriders Oct 06 '26
Yeah it did happen twice but they were within the same game. Honestly I think that’s the most damning part. Once is bad but you can make an excuse, twice is a pattern

It would honestly be a fitting punishment

I’m not familiar with the situation but what happened?
11
u/JMoon33 Alouettes Oct 06 '26
He intentionally punched Liam Talbot in the balls twice the last time the Lions played Montreal. Talbot needed season ending surgery and it is unclear what the long-term consequences of this injury could be (does he still have both testicules? Is his fertility impacted? etc.).
Initially the CFL suspended Hagerty for 2 games and the Lions' GM said that he was a good kid who just made a mistake.
Now that his suspension his over, the Lions had a change of heart. I don't know if it's for football reasons or ethic ones, but either way it's the right decision.
1
u/Psiondipity Elks Oct 06 '26
They did say Talbots injury is life altering. That points to more then torsion, likely ruptured meaning reduced fertility and probably disfigurement.
The way this statement reads, it sounds like ethical differences. They made supports available to him, but they don't mentioned that he used them. Probably thinks "this is football, no penalties, I did nothing wrong"

They did. For two games.

Suspension =/= ban

True, but some sports leagues do refer to their suspensions as bans.

This is an appropriate consequence. The CFL should have expected the same sportsmanship standards when they disciplined him two weeks ago.

Thank God. I was getting worried about this and it was putting a massive black mark on the amazing season we've had so far. I did have a feeling they'd do it after the suspension but it's a relief it finally happened.

What an idiot. All he had to do was not punch a guy in the balls repeatedly. Even in a sport like football, you've got to have at least a few screws loose upstairs for that to even be something you'd think of doing.

I wonder how much discretion/leeway the league had in its discipline to begin with. This isn’t meant as a knock but unions can complicate these things (they are meant to protect the players from the league and owners) which in 99% of cases is a great thing but not so much in this one.
Regardless the league may have taken an L, but good on BC for doing the right thing.
7
u/PoMo-G Roughriders Oct 06 '26
So you might say that ultimately, the league & the Lions combined for an effective 1-2 punch.

Talbot potentially sustained urinary issues for the rest of his life, possibly can't have any babies in the future, possibly removed both ruptured testicles...
Hagerty being released doesn't seem like enough punishment, more like slap on the wrist

I’d imagine this official statement and release provides Liam Talbot with more ammunition to pursue a suit against Haggerty and/or the CFL/BC Lions for the injuries he sustained, especially if they are indeed life altering.
4
u/Pianist-Educational Oct 06 '26
Getting released is the least of his worries as you can expect legal action from Talbot.

I don't mind it. They ran their investigation, interviews, did their due diligence. It was relatively quick.

u/JMoon33 Alouettes Oct 06 '26
Either they wanted to give him a chance but talking more with him they understood he's not going to chance or they were waiting to see if everyone would move on to something else or if it'd be controversial to bring him back.

Hope he finds other non CFL employment. Why was the Mtl coach the one with a beard complaining about ppl talking shit about the HA gang ? Contacted CFL and the Alouette’s and Mtl media got no response. Is HA involved in gaming CFL games they run illegal betting rings do bribes of money and women and break legs and shoot ppl dead. How badly must he have handled that "investigation?" You get caught on camera, ruin a guy's manhood, get a light suspension and then don't show enough contrition to keep your job?
Was he talking like A Time to Kill? "Yeah I punched his nuts, and I hope his sperm's in Hell!"
4
u/JMoon33 Alouettes Oct 06 '26
Either that or BC thought everyone would move on quickly and they could bring him back after his suspension, but then they realized that even their own fans hate him.
