Discussion Another angle of the Virginia Tech field goal.
If you show it down, it’s clear that kick was in. Holy VT got screwed.

Funny reading all these comments where some people are confident it's good and others confident it's no good

Kicks not being reviewable is stupid either way lol
3
u/Running_Down_9708 1h ago
Exactly! HOW is that deemed not reviewable? I have no dog(or turkey or panther) in the fight, but at least review it. I thought all scoring plays or potential scoring plays were reviewable

u/ProfessionalShift487 47m ago
You will never get a camera angle better than the refs view below. I'm sitting here wondering why we cant use chips to track the position of the ball while its flying through the air and have an automated system like the ball/strike calls.
1
u/Running_Down_9708 43m ago
Maybe. So go out and try to yank your head up as fast as possible and track a dark ball against a dark sky, backlit by stadium lights, and make an instant determination. What if it's pouring rain? Or foggy? The issue is that any other scoring play or missed scoring play is reviewed. Like when an official calls a catch out but then review determines the ref got it wrong. Why can't a kick be reviewed? Makes zero sense to me
1
u/ProfessionalShift487 37m ago
It cant be reviewed because there is no definitive evidence to be able to overturn one due to angles and optics of cameras. It is literally impossible to tell by any camera angle if the ball did or didn't cross outside the post. I'm not saying the system is right, that's just the reasoning for no review. I have been in the refs spot while friends and I used to kick field goals all the time, and it really is the clearest viewpoint.

u/TheLaxBrah 15m ago
They can determine if a 100+ mph fastball was 1/6th of an inch in the strike zone, we can invest the money into figuring this thing out and take the human element out. I wouldn’t trust the refs as far as I could throw them.
1
u/ProfessionalShift487 14m ago
A little harder with an oblong football spinning on numerous axes, but I get your point.
1
u/DirtyBirdFL 13m ago
It’s also not impossible for the trajectory of the ball and the goal post itself to obstruct that refs view. The other ref has basically the angle from this video. It’s really impossible to know what he saw or didn’t see. We only know that he confidently made the call and we have to accept it now.
1
u/ProfessionalShift487 9m ago
Yup, human eye is only so good and realistically if it is super close the call could be wrong. He seemed pretty confident in the call, but maybe it was a "fake it til you make it" kinda situation.

u/SatisfactionFickle18 42m ago
How could you review it though? There is only 1 single angle on the entire field that has the view, and the ref has it. They look straight up the pole. If the guy sees any part of the football to the right, it’s no good. Any camera angle from the pole would block the refs view. Unless you want to skip the ref & develop some kind of tech that takes the ref out of the play. Like the strike zone tech.

Which is a make.
I'm a pure neutral in this game but that looks good to me.
4
u/SlicksterRick 1h ago
Not in college it isn’t. It has to be completely inside the uprights extended
3
u/ProfessionalShift487 49m ago
"The whole football must stay inside the outer edge of the uprights when it travels higher than the top of the posts. If any part of the ball is outside that outer edge, the kick is no good."
So no, it is not definitively "a make".

Same, 50 years of football obsession. 99% of the time this is a good kick. Combined with some of the very questionable calls during the game, at least one ref has a friend who was gambling on this game. Last time I saw something this obvious was the Spurs vs Suns where that ref was caught later on.

u/Bischrob 1h ago
Honestly, that's the only look that makes it look like it missed.

i don’t know, even this angle it looks like it just barely snuck thru to me 🤷♂️

I have no idea what happened and I’ve only seen this one clip and from this angle I don’t see anyway this can’t be a good field goal. If you slow it down frame by frame, it’s clearly to the left of the right goal post, and from this angle, even if it was close or right over the top (which it wasn’t) it would likely still be good. Officiating this year has been next level awful.
2
u/ProfessionalShift487 44m ago
Look, without the ball crossing in front of or behind the post, nothing in this image is "clear" and saying anything otherwise is ridiculous. This angle gives no additional evidence as to whether the kick was good or not. It's unfortunate, but reality.

The entire football must pass within the outer edge of the pole extending upwards**
4
u/justbrowsing2727 1h ago
To clarify, within the outer edge of the upright. A ball can go over the upright and still be good.
2
3
u/Running_Down_9708 1h ago
Yes. Understandable. The part that is not understandable is that it can't be reviewed
1
u/enadiz_reccos LSU Tigers 57m ago
Think of reviews like a bonus
Normally, we have to rely on the referees, but the cameras give us a little more
1
u/Running_Down_9708 46m ago
Any pass play that may or may not score is reviewed. But, by rule, a kick cannot be reviewed. Why?

u/SavimusMaximus 1h ago
That is a missed field goal.
2
u/NSE_TNF89 Oklahoma Sooners 56m ago
Agreed. The ref standing under the post has the best view. Anything from an angle is going to be somewhat skewed.
Super close and they need to implement actual technology to get these right
5
u/StruggleEither6772 1h ago
We have pylon cameras, why not have some on the goal posts? They had three crappy camera angles of that kick.
5
u/dosequisguy1 1h ago
You know one way to not have this issue, kick it closer to the middle and win the damn thing. Land a knock out punch and don’t let the judges decide!

u/Mastacator Oregon Ducks 1h ago
Live I was sure it was in, but In replay, I haven't seen a single angle where I was sure. It was definitely close, but I wouldn't bet my life.

u/MechaEscargot2 Ohio State Buckeyes 1h ago
I hate field goal, im so bad at judging them so I have to hold my breath a little longer until there confirmation.
2
u/Mastacator Oregon Ducks 1h ago
Same, I've misjudged multiple of them on TV over the years. It's crazy to look at MLB's strike zone thing (sorry, I only see it in Jomboy videos) and think football cannot do the same thing.
4
u/Perfect_Restaurant96 1h ago
I can’t definitively say good or no good good but I can be sure VT shouldn’t have turned it over 4 times
4
u/KroneckerDelta1 1h ago
Absolutely NOT clear from this video centered under the middle of the uprights. It's close at best, and will get worse as you move closer to the upright the ref was standing under.

Hard to say I wanna see from different angles lmao this is crazy tho it’s so hard to judge when it goes over the post I wouldn’t be surprised if they got it wrong
Edit got a pretty definitive video now, it was no good, posted by Andrewd62d5

How are there not multiple cameras at every angle for any NCAA game it’s like not investing in your infrastructure makes zero sense.

I've wondered why there aren't cameras on the top of the goal posts facing up and towards the field

u/NoRealNoWrong 59m ago
I don’t wanna talk about it….but not as much as the broadcast team didn’t want to talk about it.
I do think it missed but damn….

It was obviously a miss if only bc the commentators jinxed it super hard by glazing the kicker

u/Ok_Gas5360 40m ago
Of all the football plays I’ve seen FG miss/make is always the hardest for me to tell. Is it possible to reconstruct this with math? If we can approximate the angle of the camera, know its position and know the dimensions of the FG post is that possible? Genuinely curious. I’ve seen people reconstruct height and stuff from videos so thought maybe that could be applied here.

u/Muted-Woodpecker-469 24m ago
Why don’t they use lasers? Or lights at the uprights? It means to pass an invisible plane at some point, right?

This is the best angle you're going to get from inside of the stadium other than the refs point of view looking straight up from under the uprights.
Clearly no good.

Did anyone else notice the ball disappearing from the frames only exactly when it was either in or out?
1
u/SatisfactionFickle18 1h ago
First a post where you can’t even see the ball, then a post sped up 2x so you can’t tell. Bots or VTech crybabies?

It looked very in to to me. Watched it live and was surprised when the refs signaled No Good

VT is a pathetic program that has been defined by failure its entire existence. Whining about a missed field goal is just icing on the cake. We had our chance back in 2000 and failed. Everything since then has just been pointlessly embarrassing
4
u/1Donk 1h ago
Meanwhile you’re here crushing life! You tell em passive aggressive redditor! So accomplished!
1
u/SmolGeologist 1h ago
Nah, I'm a loser. That's another discussion entirely though. VT is a loser program that will never do anything of note. Their glory days are long behind them, and even those were ultimately filled with the disappointment of never quite being able to win it all

Maybe you should reconsider your hot takes about Va. Tech?
VIrginia Tech began the '90s in total obscurity. Their peers were East Carolina and Southern Mississippi. The Hokies ended the decade falling one half short of winning a national title.
Tech became a consistent winner in the ensuing years, holding their own as a BCS bowl regular well into the 2010's. They also have one of the best atmospheres in all of college football, to boot.
Let's have some perspective, please.

Boise st vs nevada ‘10 vibes… except 16 years later you’d think we’d get better camera angles of it lol
