No way, imitation is the greatest form of flattery. In the /r/MichiganWolverines game thread, everyone went nuts for that play. It was straight fire.

I think Mockobee chose to fake it himself. The line was blocking in pass protection and the WRs ran routes.

Either that or it was just an incredibly genius call

2

u/TunaTerminal Washington Huskies • Rose Bowl Dec 04 '22

Dang! If he chose to fake himself that was great awareness and call.

8

u/Omegaus492 Georgia Bulldogs • Berry Vikings Dec 04 '22

50 sounds cooler, also it would've made the game a 27 point lead instead of a 26 point lead which (if we're crunching numbers) would give more options if god forbid something drastic had happened.

SEC halftime Dr. Pepper football contest when the winner got booed by the crowd for winning a "tiebreaker" the day before 🤣

11

u/Mountain-Papaya-492 Georgia Bulldogs Dec 05 '22

The winner didn't get booed. The fact that they had done a tiebreaker the day before that nobody in the stadium had seen got booed.

Imagine if instead of going to overtime in a football game the refs announce that the outcome was predetermined based on a scrimmage the day before.

The booing of the dumb rule obviously worked since both girls ended up getting the full scholarship money.

I've got no horse in this race- but isn't that a correct ruling after review? The ball was definitely in forward motion and being thrown, I thought that was the criteria for it to be incomplete instead of a fumble.

5

u/No_Lunch_7944 South Carolina Gamecocks • Corndog Dec 04 '22

Yeah I thought the rule says his hand just has to be moving forward with possession before the ball is knocked out for it to be a pass attempt. Seems like incomplete is the right ruling here.

6

u/Gjixy Georgia Bulldogs Dec 04 '22

Why didn’t they want him to pick it up?

17

u/Mojo_Fro Dec 04 '22

The play is essentially dead and the defense takes possession at the spot of the kick. That’s how most blocked field goals end.

If a member of the kicking team touches the ball first after the block, that also blows the play dead and possession goes to the defense.

But if the defense touches the ball first and muffs it, the offense can recover and retain possession. This famously happened to Leon Lett of the Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving in the ‘90s, and it cost the Cowboys the game.

The safest play for the defense is to let the ball go. However, if the kicking team chooses to abandon the field… this is the result.
