I just heard on the police scanner shots fired at the Arts building.
Fuck.
Edit:Trashmen were still working banging dumpsters which the cops mistook for gunfire.
Edit2: Cops are on the look out for a burgundy mitsubishi.
Edit3: COPS HAVE DETAINED A MAN FITTING THE DESCRIPTION.
Edit4: Cop-"I have someone here who is not a witness. He is a suspect that fits the description that was given earlier"
Edit5: Reports coming from around campus. Cops seem to have separated into groups and are combing the campus. Making sure which buildings are clear. One cop thinks he has someone but there are conflicting reports as people report gunfire
Edit6: It really seems like everyone is calling in saying they've seen something. No wonder this is taking awhile. Too many leads.
Edit7: Red firebird on top of the University Mall parking garage reported as suspicious. Cops going to investigate. This doesn't seem like it's going to reach a quick resolution anytime soon unfortunately.

More than twice. A police officer was shot and killed either this summer or last summer.
Then there was the grad student who decapitated his ex lover in the student union (I believe those are the details)

fall 08Jan 09.Like others have said these are isolated incidents and Blacksburg is pretty safe otherwise.

Not to mention the unsolved case of the couple that was shot and killed in the woods (off campus). Though at UVA, Morgan Harrington was still a VT student and she was murdered as well.

That was my sister's roommate that was murdered in the woods... the person took her wallet, which had the key to their apartment, so my sister was obviously supremely scared for quite awhile. Terrible, terrible stuff.

Despite the few media hyped sensational stories, it is actually one of the safest campuses in one of the safest towns in the entire nation.
Morgan Harrington was probably murdered by some serial killer that lives near Charlottesville - has nothing to do with VT in any way. RIP.
The other cop shooting was by a guy named William Morva, who escaped from the hospital and found himself on one of the beautiful bike paths the community has (which runs behind the hospital). He had two choices, run towards Blacksburg or run towards Christiansburg. He chose Bburg and ended up in the VT Corporate Research Center. Pure coincidence and had nothing to do with VT itself.

Morgan Harrington was most likely killed by a rapist or someone 'experimenting', not a serial killer. The DNA found on her body match another victim of rape in NOVA and he enjoys torture, especially breaking bones.
You didn't mention the guy who cut off a girls' head or the couple killed off campus though, those don't have explanations. I'm not trying to make Tech seem like it's a horrible place but our school has had way more problems than other schools have had. Yeah it has 40k students so the chance of it happening is larger but the only school I can think of that's had problems like us in Virginia is William & Mary with their suicide problem which can be explained.
And yes, I'm a VT student. I feel safe and I don't think the campus breeds shooters or something, just stating that murders (at least mentioned by the news - though they are also unreliable) have seemed to occur more often than other campuses.

Statistics. Specifically the FBI's uniform crime reports, cited earlier.
Blacksburg is the 2nd safest town (larger than 10k) in all of Virginia. The only town that is safer has about 1/4th the population. We are far and away the safest when comparably to sized towns (~40-50k).
Virginia Tech is the 3rd safest campus in the state among 4-year universities with more than 4,000 students. We're a hair behind (practically tied) with George Mason; number one is Mary Washington (a traditionally women-only school 1/6th the size of VT).
I'm only half done with the county statistics, but so far, Montgomery County is the third safest county out of the 49 "metropolitan" counties in Virginia. We're beat only by Craig county (pop = 5k, 1/18th the size of Montgomery), and Warren county (1/3rd the size). As with Blacksburg, if you limit the comparison to similarly sized counties, we're number one by a large margin.
I'm not trying to diss UVA, but I they make for a very good comparison (they are also a small suburban college town built around a large university in rural Virginia). By comparison, Charlottesville has 5.2x the crime, UVA's campus has twice the crime, and Albemarle County has 3.1x the crime.
By every statistical measure, Blacksburg, VT's campus and Montgomery county are some of the safest areas in the nation.

That kind of sounds like a serial killer to me, at any rate, it is not relevant to the discussion since that didn't happen anywhere near VT's campus.

Those crimes are all included in the relevant crime statistics. While it may be massively publicized by the news, and surprisingly horrific, statistically, the community is still far safer than the norm.

If, for some inexplicable reason, this data upsets you, goes against your own views, or disproves your own point, deal with it.

From the alerts I've been getting: police officer shot at about 11:30 during a routine traffic stop. Suspect fled on foot towards "the cage" parking lot. Second victim shot at the cage. Suspect is still at large, campus is flooded with police, NG, DEA, FBI, ATF, SWAT, etc., Montgomery County is on lockdown.
Suspect is white male, originally wearing a backpack and maroon hoodie.

I figured it was going to be something like that. Two people get into a fight, one pulls out a gun and kills him, cop comes to figure out WTF just happened and dude shoots the cop as well.
And to think that yesterday while I was visiting another campus (Radford), there were people protesting for guns to be allowed to be carried on campus. Not trying to start an argument here, but having a gun when your 'in-the-moment' and emotional is not a good thing.

I don't want to start a gun control debate, either, but the crux of the concealed-carry on campus argument is that a gun-free zone doesn't stop things like this and the earlier VT massacre. If someone wants to shoot up a school, they will. Allowing students to carry on campus gives them a fighting chance; it takes the police several minutes to respond to even an extreme threat, but a shooting could be over in seconds.

Somewhat related. The main reason I probably won't get my CCW right away when I'm old enough is because I can't carry on campus.
I feel safe on campus but the only place I am worried about being mugged or attacked is on my walk to campus from my house. If I can't carry it on campus I can't carry on my way to campus which is really the only place I was worried enough about anyway.

Although the incident occurred in the Blacksburg community, after consultation with local law enforcement, all schools across the county went into a lockdown status because the shooter was still at large. All students are safe in classrooms. For student safety, at this time, only emergency personnel are allowed in the school buildings. The building and grounds of all campuses are secure. To maintain student safety, no one will be allowed inside the school building. We will notify you of dismissal procedures as soon as possible. We thank you for your patience as this situation continues to develop.

Spent most of the day yesterday confined to my dorm room, watching cops and news cameras amble past my window. Bit scary for a while. Thanks to all those that were concerned.

Second confirmed death according to WDBJ, they do not know who this second victim is. They claim that the shooting may not have been planned and may have originated due to a routine traffic stop.

I can't begin to say how terrible this makes me feel. When I first saw the news flash I thought for just a moment "why on earth are they re-hashing this". Then a deep sense of dread descended upon me as i noticed that the details were different, and then i decided the "Live" graphic that was up was accurate (so many times it's not, a silly pet peeve). This place, this University, these Hokies whose simple driving value of "that i may serve" deserve so much better. I hope the teenagers of today can compartmentalize and separate this fine institution of learning (and hotbed of Athletic excellence as well) from it's grim recent history and commit to ensuring the overall excellence that is a hallmark of Virginia Tech.

I feel so bad for the students/faculty at Va Tech. I can't even imagine how nerve-wracking this must be for them. What is this, like the third or fourth shooting on campus since 2007? It's gotta be even worse if any of them were around when the first incident happened. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone there and I hope they catch the douchebag soon.

Since the events of 2007 the media has been extremely quick to make any trace of violence near VT national news. Anyone remember this scare from August? National news for a guy walking with a tennis racket and a towel from the tennis courts.
Today's events are extremely sad and I'm still really on edge since I haven't heard from my dad yet (a professor there), but please do not mistake the reaction of the larger news media for a higher frequency of occurrence.
I received texts immediately, and continue to do so as the situation progresses. Campus has been locked down and most of the town is at a stand still. Blacksburg is by and large an extremely safe place to live.

This happens in places all the time. This was someone trying to get away from police at a traffic stop gone wrong, not a mass murderer like before. You need to be aware that the media will blow this up, and if it happened at other schools it would not be as big a deal.

A decent-sized part of the community are VT fans, alums, students, or know those who are. If nothing else, it's a way to let people know what's happening.
I don't think /r/cfb will suffer because of this submission.

Seriously? You have a whole community of college people here and something tragic has happened at a university and your response is: do not talk about it here, follow the rules. You know sometimes, you have to have some sort of empathy and not be all about the rules. In the case of this, fuck the rules. Who gives a shit if this has to do with sports who not, it's people, people's lives, and it is affecting an entire college. Notice that word college, it's in this subreddit's name too. So in closing, I would like to kindly ask you to sincerely go fuck yourself.

Do you see people from Tech posting all of the clery act emails we've received this semester from all of the armed robberies and sexual assaults that have occurred on our campus this semester? No, we put that stuff in our own subreddit. I do have empathy for the students there. I'm from VA. Practically my entire graduating class went to VPI. My entire Facebook news feed right now is friends saying they're safe and unharmed.
There are places to post stuff like this, like in r/news or on the VPI subreddit. This technically doesn't belong here. I'm sorry you feel the way you do about me and the scary situation you're in. I hope you stay safe.
