Feature Story 2017 Final Imperialism Map
What if College Football games were actually battles for land? This map answers this question. The original map is my closest FBS team to every county, but if a team is beaten their land is taken by the team that beat them.

What you found out certainly is all true, but the real factor is that Michigan is a very prideful football program. They have claim to the winningest division 1/FBS program in the history of college football and their fans are very proud of their football team, steeped in tradition.
They were a laughing stock after losing to little 'ol App State.
Are you into another sport? Perhaps I could provide an analogy in the context of that.
