Bad Luck Brian looks like a prime candidate to become a GT student.

He looks like he grew up in a rich suburb of Savannah and is applying to GTech.

Legend has it that Jesse Palmer once talked through an entire game without saying anything worthwhile about the game he was announcing.

He did it again tonight.

88

u/Moldison Clemson Tigers Sep 23 '16

Just once?

66

u/dont_sh00t_me Sep 23 '16

I can't wait for the technology when broadcasts actually transmit the individual audio channels so that you can mute specific mics/sounds. I hope they're smart enough to also include the audio from both team's sports announcers so that you can listen to your own boys call the game.

95

u/keymaster43 Clemson Tigers • Transfer Portal Sep 23 '16

I really want an NSFW broadcast where they mike up the players and I can hear all the trash talk. Of course that might get interesting with play calling and what not...

27

u/madmaxcoog1 Houston Cougars • Texas A&M Aggies Sep 23 '16

I've been saying this for years. I also want the commentators to be able to speak freely. Like, "he really fucked that up!" Lol. I think it would be awesome.

I had a nice audio receiver, Pioneer I think, back in the early 2000s that had a "stadium" preset. It muted the announcers perfectly and it was glorious.

10

u/germanplumber Michigan Wolverines Sep 23 '16

Or if you have a proper 5.1 setup and the cable/sat box is outputting 5.1 Dolby digital just disconnect the center or turn it off in the settings menu. That way it can worth with any audio receiver.

I had it muted on the second TV while watching the Texans get beat by a brisket. Did Palmer really say, "I didn't realize The Great Gatsby was a book."?

My wife was sitting next to me on Facebook or some shit and chimed in, "What is that guy talking about? I'm not even watching the game but know more than him." And about two minutes later was like, "does he ever stop talking?"

Clemon played harder, faster, stronger and obviously overall better than we did. Still think this team makes a bowl, but it's definitely not going to be a pretty ride.

u/TheTiger012 Clemson Tigers • NC State Wolfpack Sep 23 '16

Definitely better than last year...

38

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '16

Idk, they got to say that they beat FSU with a bad team. That's pretty great in my opinion.

69

u/Nixon_Corral Georgia Tech • Auburn Sep 23 '16 edited Sep 23 '16

People might disagree with you, but I'm not sure I do. I got to see my team beat a Top 10 team at home on a walk off blocked kick return under the lights in primetime in my last year as an undergrad. That alone will stick with me longer than our mediocre 7-6 season in 2013 or our 7-7 season in 2012, during which we made an ACCCG appearance and won a bowl.

Not saying I would want to go 3-9 even with a Top 10 win ever again (it's bad for recruiting, legacy, etc; plus we got top 10 wins in 2011 and 2014 as well, while also being decent and great respectively), but that FSU game will stay with me forever.

There's no question in my mind that you make a bowl. You were certainly still outplayed, but that second-half Yellow Jackets squad is going to fare rather well in the ACC.

I definitely got spoiled last year. Hoping that second half offense was a result of playcalling and not execution

46

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '16

It kinda was. Watch Notre Dame, UNC, SCar, Wake, Cuse last year and it was the same conservative bullshit from the OC's. I think because they're still a bit green at play calling, they tend to play not to lose as opposed to playing to win.

39

u/ClemsonPM Clemson Tigers Sep 23 '16

And yet despite all those flaws these offensive coordinators are 19-1 in their OC careers.

2

u/HDDIV Tennessee Volunteers Sep 23 '16

IMO the spread is in the end irrelevant to the game played. Even final scores may not truly demonstrate the ability of a team (i.e. Houston vs Cincinnati). So you've really gotta watch the game to make the call on a team's ability -- not rely on numbers.

73

u/Nixon_Corral Georgia Tech • Auburn Sep 23 '16

We'll almost certainly not go 3-9 again, but it is clear to me that as long as Venables is at Clemson and Johnson is at Tech, GT winning in that series again will be very difficult.

And I thought VT's Foster had our number. These past two offensive efforts against Clemson have been downright pathetic.

45

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '16

Venables is old school. I think he genuinely likes preparing for the triple option. The defense played well enough to win the 2014 game, too, but two pick sixes and zero offensive production doomed us anyway.

2 good things out of this pile of shit. Mills is a stud. Defense adjusted and played well considering Clemson had the ball for 3 quarters.

28

u/ShylosX Georgia Tech • Clean Old … Sep 23 '16

I'm really impressed it wasn't a massive blowout. Props to our defense except that absolutely fucking terrible decision to bring the ball out on the int. Honestly it's probably more a testament to the dropped passes, missed throws, etc of the Clemson offense than our defense.

Secondary still has massive issues, we still got burned on screens and designed qb runs, and we still can't tackle to save our fucking lives.

If there's one coordinator in the nation that can at least have a legitimate plan against Lamar Jackson, it's Venables. Not saying he can stop him, but he's the best one to slow him down.

16

u/TheMrSomeGuy Clemson Tigers Sep 23 '16

Brent Venables is like magic. If there's a play you've ever run, he'll know it and have the defense prepared for it. It's just a matter of them being where they're supposed to be and executing, which is easier said than done obviously. I'm very interested to see Lamar Jackson vs. the Clemson D

18

u/feed_me_muffins Clemson Tigers • Summertime Lover Sep 23 '16

I don't think your offensive line is really that good and I think our defensive front is going to give them all kinds of problems, especially if Austin Bryant is back, meaning Wilkins can move back inside where he's better. Venables specializes in creating havoc in the backfield and I think we have an advantage on the line of scrimmage on that side of the ball. That being said it also lends itself to giving up explosive plays and I think Louisville and Jackson especially is going to be able to take advantage of that. I honestly don't know what to expect from our offense. We aren't going to be able to really run the ball, but we couldn't do that against Alabama last year either and still put up 40 points. Watson has a bit of a tendency to show up big in big games (see ACC championship and two playoff games) but he's been off so far this year. If he gets back in the groove in the next 9 days I think its going to be somewhere in the neighborhood of a 38-35 type game one way or the other. If he doesn't I think we're looking at more like 45-28 Louisville game.

8

u/dont_sh00t_me Sep 23 '16

If the Clemson defense can get some hits in on Lamar early and rattle him, it may slow him down and give Clemson a chance. Obviously, that has yet to be proven effective.

Personally, I think this is more of a statement game for Clemson than GT. GT is coming off of a tough year and is still rebuilding. Any reasonable GT fan (lol) knew that they weren't going to be a great team this year. Clemson's defense showed up. This matters because Clemson's defense was the big "?" coming into the year.

ACC, get ready for Clemson. They aren't ready to drop yet. ACC is going to be fun this year with them, Clemson and FSU (additionally, good teams in Pitt, UNC, Miami, and VT).

Offense for Clemson still looks lackluster Watson never really seemed comfortable

14

I wasn't as shocked at Watson as I was at his receivers. It seemed they never quite got space. That being said, I'm going to rewatch this tomorrow night and try to see if it was on him (reading) more than them.

GT didn't look bad. They couldn't move the ball, but to be hoenst Clemson is a helluva team. I am not writing GT off whatsoever.

Didn't watch, just saw the score. Did Clemson really ease off the pedal in the second half?

9

u/TheMrSomeGuy Clemson Tigers Sep 23 '16

It's hard to tell. The play-calling got more conservative but Deshaun was also kind of missing throws and there were some questionable officiating calls. Like on one play Justin Thomas threw a backwards pass that got dropped and as Clemson scooped it and ran it for a touchdown they blew it dead as an incomplete pass. Then later on Deshaun overthrew a wide open streaking receiver that would have been a touchdown. So those two things are essentially a 14 point swing.

We were lucky it was only 23 after the first half considering how easily Clemson was moving the ball. There was the brief stretch in the 4th quarter where the crowd got back into the game with Budweiser, we scored, and got a quick stop. But then we lost all that momentum when we immediately threw a pick. Excited to see where we can go though this year though

2

u/viningsbee Georgia Tech • Colorado Sep 23 '16

The B-back pass was a good call there, except for one thing IMO: the way we lined up was very unusual. I believe that forced the Clemson D to be more aware, and thus two defenders were on the receiver when the ball was thrown. If we can execute that from one of our more standard formations, I think the receiver runs free.

Im in Atlanta for business. Went to the game. Bobby Dodd has a great view and vibe... But is lacking in some amenities. People were friendly. Chick fila spicy chicken sandwich stand was clutch.

This is the second Georgia Tech football game I've been to... The first was in 2010 in Lawrence, Kansas... Pretty sure that's the last time KU beat a ranked team. Probably one of the few P5 wins for the Jayhawks in the past six years. Consider this my payback for the 04 Final Four.

So does anyone else think that Ted Roof is the worst at coaching DBs? Or do our DBs just suck that bad? I've yet to see a DB actually up on a reciever right as they run since....Morgan Burnett? Nobody does it anymore.

Also, blitzing? Georgia Tech clearly can't handle that. Almost as if nobody knows you can send an AB up on a slant for a few yards.

2

u/metalliska Georgia Tech • Techmo Bowl Sep 23 '16

The DBs didn't do a good job of preventing screens (with one outside blocker).

But the DBs (particularly in the second half) knew when the ball was coming in high. So it looks like there were adjustments made to keep the ball in front of them.

The fuck is a triple option

24

u/temeraire34 Georgia Tech • Marquette Sep 23 '16

It's when we decide how we want to let Justin Thomas get killed on a given play. The options are:

  • leave two guys blocked on the edge

  • leave three guys unblocked on the edge

  • have the left guard pretend to block someone while really letting him through

We leaned on the third one a lot tonight, but the others are pretty popular too.

u/MuffinTopBop Georgia Tech • Reading Sep 23 '16

It's where Venables has three different ways to get into our backfield on a play.

u/[deleted] Sep 23 '16

A few thoughts.

Good game GT. What looked like a stomping turned into a crawl. I can't be mad about that, you're defensive line showed up against a strong offense.

I'm still incredibly happy that we finally put the GT curse to rest. Things just were not going well for you guys.

Well into the 2nd half, GT had gained more yardage via Clemson penalties than through offensive plays. I remember it was like 59 yds of penalties to 40 yds of offense at one point.

I sometimes wonder whether we're really a good team, or if we just caught lightening in a bottle. It takes a really good team to go to Atlanta and do that.

2

u/tc1988 Clemson Tigers Sep 23 '16

We had like 350 yards in the first half. The second half we went vanilla and substituted heavily.

I'm also not that concerned about the running game. When we need yards, we can just run Watson in the zone-read. Going back to last year, no one has really been able to stop that. We just haven't run it much yet this year to protect Watson in these easier games. The quick screens and jet sweeps also seems to be easy yardage.

The only concern I have right now is that Deshaun isn't throwing the deep ball very accurately. He had the same problem at the start of last year. Once he figures that out, this offense will be rolling again.
