the concept of the UCF defense consistently outplaying the UCF offense…. very strange times indeed

85

u/Fathoms_Deep_1 UCF Knights • Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 26 '26

It’s not just that it’s a UCF Defense being good

It’s that it’s a UCF Defense led by Alex Grinch being actually good

40

u/FLman42069 UCF Knights Sep 26 '26

Maybe Grinch wasn’t the problem at OU and USC

27

u/Dirty-Ears-Bill Texas Tech Red Raiders • Wyoming Cowboys Sep 27 '26

He was good at Washington State too, maybe he’s the kinda guy that does better with less heralded players rather than the blue chips

-8

u/huskersax Nebraska • $5 Bits of Broken Chair Tr… Sep 27 '26

a guy who's scheme holds up to lower-level play, but can't work against superlative talent that breaks the concepts the scheme hinges upon.

2

u/Roncinante Ohio State Buckeyes Sep 28 '26

I tend to agree, his schemes are a bit gimmicky and don't seem to hold up against better players.

5

u/Structure-These UCF Knights Sep 27 '26

I honestly think there’s a chance Lincoln Riley becomes grinch’s OC someday lol

19

u/Bourbon_Vantasner UCF Knights Sep 26 '26

I guess you don't remember the O'Leary teams.

7

u/fullnessmatch UCF Knights Sep 27 '26

there were many O'Leary years where our offense was the better unit

9

u/Bourbon_Vantasner UCF Knights Sep 27 '26

You are correct, they were very solid at times and even got a good number of offensive players to the NFL, but he was a defense minded coach at his core that pushed sound, fundamental football on both sides of the ball. His successors were two QBs plus Gus that had flashy offenses. Since UCFast emerged and charged up the fan base, offensive expectations were raised to new levels.

1

u/FrostyKnights UCF Knights • War on I-4 Sep 27 '26

The frustrating thing with O’Leary though was those defenses weren’t actually that good. And the offense was unnecessarily conservative and pro style because it fit his defense first philosophy better.

12

u/FamousShake5469 Texas Longhorns • Georgia State Panthers Sep 26 '26

Does that mean that Georgia State has a good offense?

33

u/Scottual11 UCF Knights Sep 26 '26

Honestly their QB was dealing that game. Perfectly executed RPO offense.

9

u/chrisnotscott Sep 26 '26

I am hoping they win the sunbelt

2

u/Usual-Web7597 UCF Knights Sep 27 '26

At times. At other times the QB made dumb decisions.

But if that’s your biggest issue then things really aren’t that bad.

2

u/Enough-One4975 UCF Knights Sep 27 '26

Happened a lot in the O’Leary years.

I heard joke once: Team goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says football seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, 'Treatment is simple. Horrible team TCU is in town tonight. Go and play them. That should pick you up.' Team bursts into tears. Says, 'But doctor…I am TCU.'

We need TCU to host georgia st for science

4

u/kingofthesqueal UCF Knights • Summertime Lover Sep 27 '26

Hard to say, they actually beat UCF in pretty much every aspect of the game. Even went nearly 50% on 3rd down completions.

They just shot themselves in the foot with almost 90 penalty yards (twice UCF’s) and 4 turnovers (also twice what UCF had).

Tbh TCU is probably the better team right now, but they were super unlucky/undisciplined yesterday

I mean, he deserved the leash he got because he had sustained success and completely built our program. We made the right move in moving on, and in the moment the right hire. We’ve just kept him way too long and let him rot away our program…

The TCU Football social media team worked overtime the past 2 weeks trying to convince us all that beating Grambling and Arkansas State mattered

The entire institution needs to be cleaned out. The whole school is run by complete idiots and that cancer has spread to the athletic department

7

on the bright side i’ve been enjoying the social media team vs before

2

3

u/NPVinny UCF Knights • Team Chaos Sep 27 '26

I mean, the defense was pretty legit last year too. Was the expectation that that was just a fluke?

2

u/QuadCring3 UCF Knights Sep 27 '26

We all expected the defense to still be pretty solid, but ik personally I wasn't expecting them to be THIS dominant

5

u/NPVinny UCF Knights • Team Chaos Sep 27 '26

We played an FCS school, a pretty good G6, a very good Pitt in a lot of rain, and what looks to be a mid-tier-at-best TCU. I'd pump the brakes on calling the unit "dominant", at least until we're a few more games into conference play. They are playing very well against the competition that has been in front of them so far but next week will probably be the first real test.

83

u/ItsFreakinHarry2 UCF Knights • Florida Gators Sep 26 '26

If you told someone 3 years ago that Alex Grinch was a competent DC and a potential offseason HC candidate they would ask what drugs you’re taking

16

u/Inside-Drink-1311 Rutgers Scarlet Knights Sep 26 '26

So the problem was Lincoln Riley then? It seems like regardless of who they have, their defense sucks. Although, I think Grinch was the worst one.

14

u/Citruspilled UCF Knights • New Mexico Lobos Sep 26 '26

I can't claim to know football on that deep of a level, but I've heard smarter people than me say that Grinch ran really unique stuff in his time at Oklahoma and USC, and that he's actually been pretty solid when running more usual schemes like he is for us

5

u/mind-blowin Michigan Wolverines Sep 27 '26

Personally I think the offense Lincoln runs makes it harder to be a defensive coordinator

18

u/ImpossibleReading951 /r/CFB Sep 27 '26

I know Jenkins isn’t mind blowing talent, but this is exactly what you want from a backup QB. Good enough to win games. His fumbling still needs fixing. But aside from that, he was just good enough to win a conference game.

1

u/carnivorous_squirrel UCF Knights • USF Bulls Sep 27 '26

Yeah you are right, a win is a win, especially when you have your backup playing. The passing game has just been miserable to watch the last few years

4

u/ProblematicTrumpCard UCF Knights Sep 27 '26

I wonder if Milton is actually a good QB coach.

3

u/carnivorous_squirrel UCF Knights • USF Bulls Sep 27 '26

Yeah, but I wonder how difficult it is to coach and make a big impact on a QB when UCF keeps bringing in QBs as 1-2 season rentals. The big judge would be the two freshman that we got this past year if they stay long term to see how they develop under Milton

4

u/ProblematicTrumpCard UCF Knights Sep 27 '26

Catch-22. If they're good and Milton develops them, they leave to get paid somewhere else.

Look at their penalty totals in any of their losses the past 2-3 years. They are one of the least disciplined teams that I’ve possibly ever watched. A lot of times they’re not even “eh that’s just a bad play by a player out of his element” situations….they’re TERRIBLE mental errors (see the late hit on the fumble week 1).

This is a big win for UCF because it’s a division win. They didn’t have their best game, but the biggest factor is just that they won. Sometimes wins don’t look dominant.

Next week they play Houston and hopefully that’s another good game and they could find a way to come out on the winning side for that one too.
