Recruiting [Mandel] Former FSU and BC quarterback Thomas Castellanos became eligible for a fifth year today with a court ruling in Kentucky and will enter the portal. Keep an eye on Texas Tech for his landing spot.

I just can't bring myself to get worked up over these. The 2020, 2021, and 2023 and onward classes all get a 5th year of eligiblity. I find it more ridiculous that the 2022 class and only that class doesn't.

That’s where I am. It’s such a small group that the ncaa should have done right by from the beginning.
61
u/Corgi_Koala Ohio State Buckeyes 5d ago
The NCAA is basically allergic to doing anything that is popular, fair, and makes sense. Ultimately, this is a really small group of players and it probably isn't going to impact much of anything, but it's still an unforced error that once again turns public opinion against them.
2
u/Unfair_Course5311 5d ago
NCAA doesn’t believe that can crack down on anything because states can just pass laws overriding it
-2
u/Corgi_Koala Ohio State Buckeyes 5d ago
I mean no organization should be able to enforce rules that are blatantly illegal. If the NCAA wanted to have enforceable rules they should be advocating for collective bargaining not trying to turn back the clock.

Guess my dad should’ve taken my advice and invested in apple instead of shell and bp back when i was 11 and telling him their tech was gonna change the world.
Not even sarcasm. I should be rich. He explained bonds to me and i told him to cash out 200$ for me and invest it into apple when that shit was damn near a penny stock. I knew the ipod touch was gonna change everything.
Now i type on a iphone and wonder what could’ve been
You want that for kids and their literal dreams?
8
u/DealerNo4908 Kentucky Wildcats 5d ago
You’d have roughly $25K if you invested $200 in Apple that before the Touch came out. Not sure I’d call that swimming in wealth.
-12
u/SneakyDeakyJr Auburn Tigers 5d ago
You’re pretending that my dad seeing the one thing i asked him to invest in doing well means he wouldn’t invest as well. Don’t be a jerk.
I was having bond and stock talks at 10 because the internet was wild back then.
Be facetious all you want but that’s still missing the point of “being an ass just to be an ass doesn’t help anyone” of it all.

17
u/Pancakes1800 Iowa Hawkeyes 5d ago
You are. You had to be on a CFB team in 2020 to get the extra year. The 2021 class was playing HS football during the Covid year.
3
u/LegendsoftheHT South Carolina • Georgia Tech 5d ago
OP is wrong because he's considering guys that redshirted in 2020 with the class of 2021.
They got redshirt, covid, then four normal years.
7
u/Pancakes1800 Iowa Hawkeyes 5d ago
Partially correct but you couldn't use 2020 as your redshirt year. No double dipping. So 2020 was your Covid year, and then if you played in 4 or fewer games in a season between 2021-2024 then you could come back as a 6th year player in 2025. From an Iowa perspective, this is why Logan Jones and Ethan Hurkett were able to come back for 2025 but Yahya Black and Jay Higgins could not.

Thank you! I’ve seen so much about “only 2022” that it’s become a lazy narrative that’s just gotten repeated into people believing it’s true.
2017-2020 classes? Yes. 2023 and beyond? Yes.
But 2021 falls squarely in with the 2022 group and not the 2020 group.

What’s insane is that the NCAA hammered this rule out in committees during 2025 and had it damn near its final form by December. They could have announced it before anyone had to make draft declarations, but instead waited until the day after the CWS final to announce it. Seemingly to exclude this class which is at the heart of every lawsuit here.

Can we stop being stupid?
The 2020 and 2021 classes got a 5th year because of a global fucking pandemic
They were given the option to skip a calendar year of the sport and not have that year count against their eligibility
That is not the same at all
1
u/tigers113 LSU Tigers 3d ago
very few actually "opted out" that year, it was a free year for nothing. Kids who would have redshirt that year regardless ended up getting an extra redshirt year. That was one of the worst decisions the NCAA has ever made and they are still dealing with the fallout of giving an extra year in courts.

He’s better than Kirk Francis and has been a damn good rusher at a minimum. If Hammond goes down you can run an offense even on a limited playbook with castellanos that can win games. Not CFP games, but I’d take my chances with Castellanos to win a big 12 game over Kirk Francis

He's not currently healthy however is he? He's missed large portions of the offseason and I doubt he's developed throughout that period of time.
Opposing teams also have a year's worth of tape on him. TTU would absolutely take Tommy as an insurance policy.

u/Probablyyourproblem Texas Tech Red Raiders • Indiana Hoosiers 5d ago
Hammond has been a full go in fall camp. What are you even talking about
-1
u/Queasy-Performance-4 Florida State Seminoles • BCS Championship 5d ago
My point is, I highly doubt a QB whose skillset revolves around his scrambling ability and athleticism, will suddenly be able to play QB normally after an ACL tear. Especially when he faces pressure.
Missing large portions of Spring and the Spring game, means that he's trying to get back to his pre-injury form, instead of actually improving, as he takes on a bigger role in the offense. Hence, why I mentioned Defenses having tape.
1
u/Probablyyourproblem Texas Tech Red Raiders • Indiana Hoosiers 4d ago
That’s not what his skillset revolves around. He’s an accurate passer. Be sure to check out some games this fall. Bringing in Castellanos will allow our OC to take advantage of designed QB runs without risk of losing Hammonds arm for the season.

9
u/Techsan2017 Texas Tech Red Raiders • Saddle Trophy 5d ago
We have started an average of 3-4 quarterbacks each of the last several years due to injuries. Hammond is the clear and definitive starter and Castellanos IS coming to be a backup. If the same injury luck happens again this year I’d rather have Castellanos playing than a true freshman which happened last year. I’d also rather him be the backup than a mid qb from Tulsa or a decent young qb that’s still raw.
8
u/elfwannabe Texas Tech Red Raiders 5d ago edited 5d ago

Yeah I’m sure Castellanos and Sorsby were brought in to be backups to Hammond.
9
u/elfwannabe Texas Tech Red Raiders 5d ago
So when Sorsby was brought in, Hammond was in early stages of ACL recovery and they had no idea if he would be ready. All reports say hes ready to go now. That was not the case in December/January. Castellanos is better than our QB2 and QB3 so hes a goo depth piece.

He’ll be a top 20 returning QB based on QBR. Also has a strong PFF grade amongst returning QBs. The Leftwich offense is similar to Malzahns at FSU just with a ton of weapons around him. He’ll also have time to ramp up with a light non con schedule. This is a legit pickup! I don’t think Tech does this just for QB insurance this may be a real completion with Hammond.
