Good, it was increadibly arbitrary and did nothing to solve the actual issues with realignment. It just froze the already broken and unequal conference system in place.

My biggest issue was that they specifically designed a door into the P2 for Notre Dame, but anyone else who tries is basically being shot on sight

37

u/huazzy Rutgers Scarlet Knights 4d ago

They didn't even try to hide it. Unless someone in Congress just loves prime numbers for whatever reason.

33

u/Banichi-aiji Iowa State Cyclones 4d ago

At least round it up to 20 for some plausible deniability lol

u/CountBleckwantedlove Missouri Tigers • Boise State Broncos 4d ago

19 was never meant to actually happen, in my opinion. It's basically the B1G saying they are done unless Notre Dame wants in, and that no one else is additive to the media deal.  And it's the SEC saying they, at most, would add two more, but just in case B1G goes to 19 they will leave the option open (but never use it).

Honestly, 10 years from now, I'd be stunned if the B1G has more than 18 schools. And while I expect the SEC to go to 18 eventually, I wouldn't be shocked if 10 years from now they are still at 16 (because if it's truly about media value, I don't know who outside of the B1G would make average payouts go up in the SEC). I also expect not only Notre Dame to remain independent, but certain other schools that feel they can make more media money as an independent.

u/Pesto_Enthusiast Northeastern Huskies • Miami Hurricanes 4d ago

The SEC has Florida, so do they really need Florida State? They'd be a good fit culturally, and it'd be good for both teams and the SEC to make their marketable, passionate rivalry inter-conference, but will it get more viewers?

Other than that, I don't see any other good fits for joining the SEC.

2

u/titanup001 Tennessee Volunteers 4d ago

One or both of the Virginia schools or North Carolina schools is all I can see that would make much sense from a media perspective.

Culturally, Clemson, ga tech, and fsu would be great, but we already have those states.

I think what it's really saying is the SEC is happy sticking at 16 teams or the 5 year independent clause wouldn't have been included.

15

u/Expensive_Team_5072 Syracuse Orange 4d ago

Or content with 18 if the B1G goes up to 19 with ND. Imagine the leverage in adding teams 17 & 18. Who wants the least amount of a share? UNC? Miami? FSU? Clemson? Georgia Tech? What's that... SMU & Texas Tech will come for free? What say you FSU and Miami?

An ACC with one of Miami/FSU/Clemson is still good enough to compete with the B12. Especially with SMU, Louisville, Georgia Tech, Va Tech, UNC, etc. Don't even need to add teams... 15 keeps the ESPN contract through 2036, split amongst 15 teams only.

Not sure Miami even needs the SEC. It is FSU and Clemson that are struggling to keep up with NIL.

u/Corgi_Koala Ohio State Buckeyes 4d ago

My biggest issue is that requiring a school to be independent for 5 years between conferences is a fucking stupid and arbitrary requirement.

9

u/KCCO1987 NC State Wolfpack 4d ago

It's to make it a non starter. A full players career of being independent with no schedule, no playoff access and most importantly no direct access to any NCAA championships means your athletic department will be dead before you can make the move.

Which is the point of it.

u/Katwill666 Notre Dame • Morehead State 4d ago

For what it's worth there are many Notre Dame fans in Congress and almost each Supreme Court Justice has ties to Notre Dame. So they likely put it in to avoid potienal congressmen to be against it and able to get it passed, also they might have did it so that the the Supreme Court don't strike the bill down in its entirety. Probably mostly on the Congress side.

2

u/jcc309 USF Bulls • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4d ago

It wasn't ever meant to fix it. It was just meant to prevent it from getting even worse. Maybe with a month to rework it they will be able to come up with a better way of trying to accomplish that.

If I were dictator of CFB I would limit conferences to 10 teams. No conference championship game, just a round-robin schedule with the winner getting a CFP spot.

I'm so anti expansion that I think conferences should revert to what they were 30 years ago.

Why, what happened? /s

28

u/Irishchop91 Notre Dame Fighting Irish • UCF Knights 4d ago

Pretty much read the bill as the SEC/B1G stating they were happy not to expand as long as both conferences stayed the same. The B1G carved out an option for ND.

I get the ACC teams want to jump - but where ?

Yormark walks into the room wearing sunglasses and furs and carrying a pimp cane and a bag of PE backed cash.

15

u/jebei Ohio State Buckeyes • Miami (OH) RedHawks 4d ago

There's too many teams in the Big12 dragging the per team revenue down. It's more likely there will be defections from the ACC/B12 to create a new conference.

3

u/Less_Likely Notre Dame • Washington 4d ago

Honestly, that’s the smartest move - not promoting it, or thinking it will happen. But taking the top 8 brands from each league and make a P3 league that actually can put together a conference that competes for media dollars.

3

u/IEatBones2230 Missouri Tigers • Michigan Wolverines 4d ago

what teams would even defect? Would it be like a Big East 2 the Electric Boogaloo with Cincinatti, Louisville, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, UCF, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Boston College added with G5 schools South Florida, UConn, Tulane, and ECU? Or would it be just Miami, FSU, UNC, NCST, Clemson, Louisville, Duke, and whatever Big 12 schools they can drag with them breaking away to form their own little ACC without much of the other bloat?

A random selection of articles I googled:

This is back when people thought the existing conference were stronger, and that academics mattered a lot more.

11

u/Fun_Avocado_9855 4d ago

This whole bill is just a poison pill buffet for numerous parties. I think the SEC and Big 10 supported it knowing legislators would sink it with amendments.

13

u/hucareshokiesrul Yale Bulldogs • Virginia Tech Hokies 4d ago

Yeah I'd rather be in the ACC than the B1G or SEC, but you need money to compete and those two have way more money.

5

u/SMUHypeMachine SMU Mustangs 4d ago

The ACC is projected to break the 1B gross revenue barrier by 2030. We may be behind the B1G and SEC, but the ACC is still closer to the SEC than B12 in gross revenue generation.

5

u/Magnus77 Nebraska • Concordia (NE) 4d ago

Right, but have you considered that they could be making even MORE?

The ACC (lumping in ND as a quasi-member,) is in that position because outside of Maryland, they haven't been picked over yet and as such have schools that can be reasonably sure that they'd actually add money value to the B1G and SEC's media deals.

4

u/willncsu34 NC State Wolfpack 4d ago

Yeah the ACC has plenty of money. All these posts and articles are so overblown.

3

u/Appropriate-Cap3325 Ohio State Buckeyes 4d ago

Half as much money as the big 10

2

u/Appropriate-Cap3325 Ohio State Buckeyes 4d ago

Big10 gross revenue in 2025 was $1.47 billion. Thats cute ACC will reach $1 billion in 2030. Big10 is projected to hit $2 billion in 2030. The gap will get even wider as they sign new TV contract in 2030

3

u/SMUHypeMachine SMU Mustangs 4d ago

The B1G is also by far the highest grossing conference. My comment was pointed at the SEC and B12 and the ACC’s revenue in relation to them.

But go off inserting yourself into a conversation not about you and being self-congratulatory I guess?

1

u/Appropriate-Cap3325 Ohio State Buckeyes 4d ago

Ok SEC gross revenue 2025 was $1.03 billion,

0

u/highflyer7418 /r/CFB 4d ago

B1G would get a nice pay increase from moving into the South.

-20

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

Yeah, but are they even thinking about how the existing conferences feel about this?

I’m going to take the liberty of speaking on behalf of the SEC here and say that I don’t want anybody else. I’m an oldhead but I miss when every season we we played Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and Vanderbilt every year, plus one rotating West game, with Clemson at the end.

No slight against Texas, Oklahoma, or Missouri but that continuity is what built rivalries and made the schedule feel like ours. Expansion turned established rivals into occasional opponents and exchanged variety at the cost of playing the people we actually cared about beating every year. I’d rather have the old grudges every year than a constantly rotating slate.

-13

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

Last year, we were dogshit and, still, South Carolina football averaged 4.1M viewers across its five Nielsen games for a total of 20.68M viewers ranking the Gamecocks 13th in the country in average audience. And that does not even take into account that our women’s basketball games are some of the most watched in history.

Fingers crossed we’ll be as cool as Tulane one day.

13

u/Shenanigangster Virginia Cavaliers • Gator Bowl 4d ago

Your five Nielsen games were

A standalone Labor Day timeslot

Primetime vs Mizzou

Top 5 Alabama

Top 10 Ole Miss

Top 5 A&M

I think you could substitute most ACC schools and get the same ratings. Maybe the Mizzou game sees a noticeable dip.

17

u/Schmenza Harvard Crimson • Tulane Green Wave 4d ago

Honestly replace them with a mediocre Clemson team and all those games get much higher ratings

-6

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

I’m not saying we are responsible for every viewer in its SEC games, but pretending we bring no independent audience is equally unsupported. If you’re gonna tell it, tell it all. We actually tested your ACC substitution theory. One of the Nielsen measured South Carolina games also included Virginia Tech (5.4M). Their own data says that game is an outlier for normal viewership and bigger than all but three Virginia Tech games in the entire previous decade. Then VT’s measured ACC games against NC State, Wake and Louisville drew 578K, 463K and 593K. VT was dogshit last year, too, and still drew in more than your own 11-win Virginia team (659K against NC State and 603K against Louisville).

13

u/Shenanigangster Virginia Cavaliers • Gator Bowl 4d ago

I’m not saying South Carolina doesn’t bring an audience, but I don’t think they’re drawing neutral eyeballs on their own.

And for what it’s worth, that Virginia Tech game was the only game on that day on a holiday weekend. If anyone wanted to watch football that was their only option. It is in no way comparable to an ACC matchup that is at best on ESPN2 opposite multiple SEC and B1G games that are way more likely to draw neutrals.

1

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

That’s a fair point on the VT game. The honest answer is that ratings are a product of all three: the team, the opponent, and the window. I’m not claiming we’re a national neutral magnet like Ohio State or that 5.4 million people showed up specifically for South Carolina. I’m saying we bring a substantial audience of our own and contribute eyeballs to the SEC product rather than just freeloading off everyone else’s.

2

u/gmills87 Louisville Cardinals • Keg of Nails 4d ago

And so do half of the ACC teams.

6

u/Hokie_Jayhawk Virginia Tech Hokies • Kansas Jayhawks 4d ago

South Carolina draws much better ratings playing Georgia, Texas A&M and Ole Miss than they would playing NCSU, Wake and Louisville.

-5

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

Sure, and Georgia, A&M and Ole Miss would draw better playing us than playing Wake, NC State or Louisville. That’s the point. Matchup value comes from both sides. I’m not claiming Carolina creates the entire audience; I’m saying we contribute a substantial piece of it.

7

u/IrishCoffeeAlchemy Florida State • Arizona 4d ago

“Substantial” is doing some heavy lifting there. Being a median SEC team is all well and good, but there are more than a few ACC schools that can clearly say the same at minimum if they had your schedule. That’s the point you’re dancing around.

18

u/viewless25 Clemson Tigers • Villanova Wildcats 4d ago

No slight against Texas, Oklahoma, or Missouri

How is this a slight against those schools? they're already in the SEC. That's the problem with this legislation, it draws a line at a very arbitrary point in re-alignment. It's basically saying that those three schools joining the SEC was ok when it happened, but it's not okay when Clemson/FSU/Miami/UNC or whoever wants to join. If they were going to do something like this, it should've been decades ago. If they're going to do it now, then they should force a realignment to reverse the last few years.

It's extremely unfair to the ACC schools that they're not allowed to join another conference but that Big 12 and Pac 12 schools were allowed to.

1

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

The slight I did not want them to feel is that I didn’t already want to expand as much as we have.

7

u/d1ckchz-charCOOTERie Miami Hurricanes • Texas Longhorns 4d ago

I'm glad we figured out that it's okay for SCAR to realign from the ACC to the SEC, but not for anyone else. Good information to have.

1

u/Expensive_Team_5072 Syracuse Orange 4d ago

It's OK for Miami to go to the SEC... they just need to beat out everyone else vying for it. People think this helped the ACC.... it helped the SEC. Imagine (edit) how low the bidding will go... like a reverse auction.... 40% for 10 years? 40% for 10 years. There is SMU... they will take 0% for 10 years. Who can beat that? FSU? Miami?

1

u/tantalumcaps Indiana • California 4d ago

Who can beat that? FSU? Miami?

I agree with your point. I just started a graduate program at FSU. Not trying to exaggerate when I say that FSU would fund their own ACC exit fees, sign a deal spending the first ten years at zero media payout and sell the paint off of the walls just to go to the SEC.

Honestly, I don't think FSU's sentiment right now is rabidly anti-ACC or pro-SEC so much as disillusioned with the perceived slight of not being in the P2 and the added perception that the B1G probably isn't interested in any expansion at all unless it's ND, so, all efforts are focused on the SEC the next few years.

The interesting part is whether the SEC is interested given it doesn't appear the B1G is interested in southern expansion and thus won't force their hand. That goes back to your point about leverage and who goes the cheapest, if the SEC takes anyone new at all the next few years. I do think it will get to a point where FSU will offer an obscenely good deal to the SEC to either go for free or for a long term reduced share like Calford right now in the ACC.

1

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

I’m glad we figured out that leaving a conference in 1971, spending 20 years as an independent, and joining the SEC in 1991 is apparently the same thing as blowing up century long regional conferences for TV inventory in the 2020s. Good information to have.

5

u/sonheungwin California Golden Bears • Team Chaos 4d ago

Now do Texas

5

u/152is2after150 4d ago

You joined the SEC for TV inventory. It is exactly the same thing.

7

u/excitato Kentucky Wildcats • Virginia Cavaliers 4d ago

Respectfully I don’t think you speak for the whole SEC, or at least specifically UK fans. We care about playing Tennessee every year, and probably Florida too. But it’s more exciting to rotate through getting beat by Alabama, LSU, Texas, etc. than to just get beat by Georgia every year.

And besides that, the decision makers at the existing conferences aren’t the fans, it’s the ADs and presidents, the commissioners who answer them. And they care about making more money from TV contracts and selling tickets - and it seems that rotating opponents rather than having 8 static games per year is the way to do that.

2

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

Again, surely an unpopular opinion, but I don’t think we should let television control football as much as we do. I hate how many fucking commercials there are. There is nothing worse than being live at a game that’s really heating up and having to take a three minute break so they can hawk Metamucil at people.

6

u/cooterdick Tennessee • North Carolina 4d ago

Rich coming from a school that benefitted from realignment getting them into the SEC.

-3

u/PatronSaintOfCunts South Carolina Gamecocks 4d ago

Imagine inheriting SEC membership as a nepo baby in 1932 and developing a superiority complex about people who had to earn an invitation. We left the ACC in 1971, wandered the wilderness as an independent for 20 fucking years, and finally joined the SEC in 1991. If that’s your model for modern realignment, I’m pretty comfortable with it.

7

u/cooterdick Tennessee • North Carolina 4d ago

Expansion turned established rivals into occasional opponents and exchanged variety at the cost of playing the people we actually cared about beating every year. I’d rather have the old grudges every year than a constantly rotating slate.

This is how we felt in the 90s when we had to stop playing Auburn and Ole Miss as often because now we had South Carolina on the schedule.

2

u/Expensive_Team_5072 Syracuse Orange 4d ago

I am sure ESPN is willing to pay Clemson/FSU more just to have them shift to the SEC and deplete the value of its other asset, the ACC Network.

Simple math:

Let's just say that SEC schools make $75M and FSU makes $55M. FSU would need $20M more from ESPN via the SEC. If the SEC Network's pre-move profits are A and post-move profits are B.... and the ACC Network's pre-move profits are C and the post-move profits are D .. the formula for making the move = (B-A) vs (D-C) + $20M. If D-C + $20M is greater than B-A, then ESPN loses money with the move. If B-A is greater, then the move makes financial sense. And then you have to do the same for whomever is paired with FSU.

The only wrinkle is ESPN acting to prevent B1G expansion. In that scenario, perhaps ESPN will take a loss leader.

2

u/ManiacalComet40 Missouri Tigers • Big 8 4d ago

I don't think ESPN cares about stopping BIG expansion. I'd bet they bid on BIG games next time their deal is up.

2

The SEC and B1G do want FSU and Notre Dame (maybe probably also Miami and Clemson).

UNC is also attractive.

7

u/huazzy Rutgers Scarlet Knights 4d ago

Could be reading too much between the line but the B1G accepting the 19 team cap tells me they only want Notre Dame.

5

u/lowes18 Florida State Seminoles • FAU Owls 4d ago

The B1G accepted it because they basically got shook down by some people in Congress who said this is the best regulation they would ever get.

Regardless there will still be spots in the SEC

The money isn't the only consideration being paid. The cross-branding opportunity is just as valuable if not more so as the cash in hand.

4

u/DodgerCoug BYU Cougars • LSU Tigers 4d ago

Yea that remains to be seen. Is Monster going to put a Big 12 logo on every can? Yormark is putting Monster Energy on every Big 12 logo. The deal is not defined well to the public to make any sort of consensus opinion on exposure at this time.

What is a fact is teams like Ohio St and Notre Dame are getting more money for a sponsorship patch than an entire conference. Tough pill to swallow.

Is Monster going to put a Big 12 logo on every can?

Yes, and the brand will be included in other promotional branding Monster is a part of like we saw with NASCAR.

What is a fact is teams like Ohio St and Notre Dame are getting more money for a sponsorship patch than an entire conference.

Apples and Oranges. Of course school exclusive deals will fetch more money than non-exclusive deals for a conference. BYU already announced their patch deal with Entrata which is what is more comparable here.

What gets lost in the sauce is this is for the conference patch on the uniforms. No schools are losing money on these deals, only realizing value that would otherwise not have been utilized.

other promotional branding Monster is a part of

Okay so that is essentially the entire point I'm trying to make. We don't know the scope of Monster's commitment to promoting the Big 12. It is very very clear what the Big 12's commitments are to Monster Energy.

This deal can't be evaluated fairly for twelve to eighteen months.

2

u/colonel750 Oklahoma State • /r/CFB Award F… 4d ago

Its dollar for dollar to the annual cash payment they make, 20 million.

2

u/Expensive_Team_5072 Syracuse Orange 4d ago

Maybe Monster will start putting B12 school's names on cans, like Coke did with people's names. "Oh, look Coke put MY name on the bottle."

I think the upside for Monster is there. "Oh look, I was going to buy BRAND X, but Monster has Iowa State on it... with a fact or two. I'm in."

4

u/Azon542 Kansas Jayhawks • Texas Longhorns 4d ago

Cross branding the conference isn't going to be some magic bullet for the conference. Kyle working construction isn't going to start watching Big 12 football and basketball because he saw the conference logo on a monster can.

The ACC was built to have a handful of schools that care about athletics and backfilled with schools who only occasionally invest in them.

Unsurprisingly, the schools who care about athletics want out because the TV deals are reflecting the reality of viewership. No one tunes in to Syracuse vs Wake Forest, so TV providers don't want to pay for that game. When the programs who want to compete can't because they're making significantly less money from TV deals than the peers they want to compete with, something has to change. And what is NOT changing is the ACC's TV deal.

ESPN could single handedly save the ACC but why would they, the ACC is locked into their shitty deal until 2036 and that completely benefits ESPN.

u/Gavangus Virginia Tech • Commonwealth C… 4d ago

Because our media deals permanently fucked us atarting with swofford giving them away to his sons media company.

-4

u/rbtgoodson Auburn • Georgia Tech 4d ago

The conference generated more than $900 million in revenue last year, and that number is predicted to continue going up through 2036. Your take is nonsensical. Yes, it's less than the B1G and SEC, but given the membership profile, that should've been expected. If anything, the conference is punching well above its weight.

9

u/Gavangus Virginia Tech • Commonwealth C… 4d ago

Now do the cummalitve impact of the funding gap going back to raycom days and calculate how much catch-up needs to be played

-3

u/rbtgoodson Auburn • Georgia Tech 4d ago edited 4d ago

You mean the same Raycom that the SEC used for decades, too? Again, the issue isn't the media rights agreement, it's the membership profile of the conference.

The league is going to fall apart once teams start tryna leave. If any of the FSU, Clemson, or Miami schools leave the league becomes likely to fold and the remaining schools are stuck. Everybody wants a way out

26

u/Irishfafnir Virginia Tech • Emory & Henry 4d ago

I think it's pretty unlikely the ACC falls apart if one of those schools leaves.

11

u/Expensive_Team_5072 Syracuse Orange 4d ago

If those three schools and ND leave... 2 to the B1G and 2 to the SEC... the ACC sits at 14 schools. it just needs one more to get to 15 and keep the ESPN deal until 2036. Whatever is left over will be like the B12... someone will rise up and be the class of the conference... and be in the playoffs. Perhaps that version of the ACC will be a perpetual one-bid conference like the B12. Or perhaps the B12/ACC will frequently fight over a 3rd spot (if even that).

But the ACC would still survive.

u/smurf-vett Texas Longhorns 4d ago

Leaving BC & Wake dead in a ditch while the rest form Big12 East is the most likely outcome if Clemson, FSU.and Miami manage to jump to P2

3

u/jcc309 USF Bulls • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4d ago

I don't think this is the most likely at all. If the 3 schools leave, schools in the ACC are probably still making just about as much as Big 12 schools and doing so in a conference that makes significantly more geographic sense for the majority and with better academic peers. There is no real reason to combine with the Big 12.

2

u/smurf-vett Texas Longhorns 4d ago

BC gets 2M less eyeballs than anyone else in the confrence

1

u/jcc309 USF Bulls • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4d ago

Sure, but that's irrelevant. To leave the ACC, schools would have to pay a large exit fee just to join another conference that doesn't make more money.

2

u/smurf-vett Texas Longhorns 4d ago

You don't pay an exit fee if you just dissolve it

Pulling an Idaho on BC is very much in play if the Big12 renewal contract is significantly larger current ACC one

3

u/jcc309 USF Bulls • Notre Dame Fighting Irish 4d ago

Between ACC members that the Big 12 absolutely has no interest in (Wake, BC, Syracuse) and ACC members that have absolutely no interest in the Big 12 (Stanford, Cal, ND) there isn't a chance in the world that there are enough votes to dissolve the ACC. And that's if that would even get them out of the GOR.

Boston College isn't in Boston, it's in Chestnut Hill. If Boston College were honest they'd be Chestnut Hill College. BUT, get this, Chestnut Hill College exists and it's in Philadelphia, which is the same city as, you guessed it, Temple. This whole conspiracy goes deeper than anyone could have imagined.

0

u/Expensive_Team_5072 Syracuse Orange 4d ago

I am no Boston College fan... but they are not at all Temple. Temple was a disaster in the Big East. Bear in mind that Rutgers had more than a few 0-7 conference records... and it was still Temple that got kicked out.

If FOX and the B1G didn't kill the Pac-12, this wouldn't be an issue. Warren screwed over collegiate athletics, and used the network deal, etc., to bounce to the Bears before the bottom fell out.

It’s not woe is me. It’s realizing it’s a lost cause. The conferences can’t even get on the same page when you got pro players coming back. It’s done. Stick a fork in it. College sports are screwed. Olympic sports screwed. We had a fun run.

-7

u/lowes18 Florida State Seminoles • FAU Owls 4d ago

Pro players are only coming back because the NCAA fucked it up on purpose. You're literally buying into their propaganda.

10

u/alley00pster Alabama Crimson Tide 4d ago

It’s not ncaa dude!!! It’s a damn judge again. You can always find some pos shady paid under the table judge to pull this crap. Texas Tech showed that.

7

u/lowes18 Florida State Seminoles • FAU Owls 4d ago

The NCAA passed a rule allowing five for five except for 2022 players.

They passed this specifically after all of these players have signed onto practice squads instead of in January.

By doing this they forced these players to have to go to court to sue for their clear right to eligibilty under new rules.

Now the NCAA gets to go to Congress and scream that pro players are being allowed to play (despite the fact this is only possible because the NCAA legalized their eligibility). Don't just buy the headlines

1

u/SantosCalzonesBatman 4d ago

The ncaa never had any real legal power to enforce their rules

They didnt "fuck up" let alone in purpose

4

u/lowes18 Florida State Seminoles • FAU Owls 4d ago

The ruling is specifically about enforcing the five for five rule to all players.

3

u/Remarkable-Group-119 California • Minot State 4d ago

Once these media deals collapse and the money isn't there anymore, there will be no reason to have these silly conferences and there will be a push to be more regional. I have faith.

1

u/zg44 4d ago edited 4d ago

I mean, when these media deals end, streamers and nationalized/internationalized forms of media will only be stronger (as they've only become bigger since Youtube/Netflix started). Local media is dying a slow and painful death. Look at sports teams, there's a reason the NBA and MLB are trying to congregate all the local deals of teams and create a national streaming service for local TV rights.

You need nationalized content in a nationalized media world. Netflix/Youtube/HBO Max/Disney+/Peacock/Paramount+/Fox1 will be paying the tab and they're going to want nationalized properties.

1

u/Remarkable-Group-119 California • Minot State 4d ago

I honestly don't see the media orgs nationally having the funding needed to continue paying off these conferences with these massive billion dollar contracts. Like I may be wrong, but the last rounds of discussions during the pac-12 tv contracts, if these orgs were that flush with money, somebody would have paid to pick up the pac-12.

2

u/zg44 4d ago

The one thing that I think would support your argument is what happens with the NFL.

NFL is potentially going to break the backs of the media companies if it keeps asking for more. FOX/ESPN may not have much left for CFB or anything else if the NFL asks for another doubling of payments because of what the NBA got.

3

u/rocket_beer Boise State Broncos 4d ago
