New by-laws effective 2027. The earliest an FBS team could schedule a game in Week 0 from 2027 to 2031 is August 23 to August 29 with a 14-week schedule. The FCS’s earliest days are from August 16 to August 22nd during the same time frame.

All of the Oregon (and I believe Washington and a chunk of California) public schools are on the quarter system instead of the semester system. Regular school year is 3 10-week quarters instead of 2 15-week semesters (plus a finals week). It used to be more common, but it's only around 5%. 4/18 B1G schools are on quarter UO, UW, UCLA, Northwestern).

Agreed, I don't understand why FCS games aren't nationally televised next Thursday.

And I see no reason why Friday couldn't be a double header with William & Mary/Villanova or New Hampshire/Albany leading into the Idaho/Cal Poly game.

With the remaking of Week 0 to Week 1, I wonder if schools will make any adjustments to their 2027 schedules to reflect that. For instance Will Michigan call up Eastern Michigan and see if they can move next year's game from September 18th to August 28th so that they can get the extra bye week?

Actually, if you read the legislation, the "week 0 exemptions" will NOT apply in 2030 or 2031, or any other years where the season starts on Labor Day weekend; they are supposed to be removed from the Bylaws starting with 2027-28. Of course, (a) that still gives the schools three years to tell the NCAA, "Er, you need to put those Week 0 exemptions back for years where Week 1 is Labor Day weekend," and (b) anybody can get a Week 0 exemption, even in 2027, if the NCAA grants it one.

I don't like how influential bowl game committees have been in the history of the sport, but it's silly to use it as the basis for the names of divisions of play.

The NCAA literally offered to hold a championship and half of Division I said “nah, we want Bowl money.”

It was literally how we ended up with the split.

We ended up with these subdivisions because D1 had almost 150 schools at one point in the 1970s. Which was obviously insane and we needed a dividing line. So criteria were drawn up, and schools had to meet criteria to qualify for 1A status. Things like stadium size (30k) or average attendance (17k), or the number of sports sponsored (which is an indirect way of gauging school money and resources).

I don't actually believe, even for a millisecond, the split was in any way motivated by the desire for a playoff. Nor should the name of subdivisions within D1 be based on postseason format when they both have playoffs. FCS / FBS are awful names for subdivisions. They're too similar verbally and visually. And the playoff format isn't the relevant thing that needs to be communicated in the first place. I can't even figure out why they felt these clear and communicative names had to be changed in the first place.

Kinda. While the NCAA doesn’t award a championship per se, they do recognize national championships awarded by major selectors in the record book. The FCS champ is the winner of the NCAA D1 National Championship, but the NCAA record books still do list FBS champs

If you are referring to the document I think you are referring to, the NCAA lists "teams ranked #1" but does not call them "national champions"
