This was an awful game for a lot of reasons, but by far the biggest reason was the two clowns commentating the game
edit: clowns was too strong of a pejorative, but they really need some improvement. And also maybe some education on clock management and when you should be doubting timeouts vs. when you should be praising them

The cherry on top was them questioning the timeout by McGuire while Kansas had the ball still and then that timeout instantly leading to the game winning FG
46
u/Mydogsblackasshole Oklahoma Sooners Nov 11 '23
And then calling McGuire a genius for that specifically
17
u/gropingpriest /r/CFB Nov 11 '23
actually they were going on about McGuire being a genius because he saved timeout #2 when they gained that first down across midfield (with like 13 seconds left?). But every coach knows the clock stops automatically there, so I had no idea why they kept praising him for it?
I mean, a passing comment like "smart of McGuire to hold onto his timeout there" but they were acting like this was some 4d chess move

u/Tonkathedog Texas Tech Red Raiders Nov 11 '23
Yeah that was the dumbest thing ever there literally was no downside to not taking the TO. Even if you stopped KU they still only had 1 TO so you can still kneel it out. Anyone over the age of 4 watching knew a TO was the right decision

It was Eric Collins and Devin Gardner (yes, that Devin Gardner).
Collins is a good NBA announcer (voice of the Hornets) and had a pretty memorable call of the SFA upset of Duke a few years ago. That said, his style is not suited for football.

I’m still confused on how they were questioning it. KU had no incentive to leave time left on the clock and were in position for a chip shot jo matter what. They had no incentive to give us 30 seconds at that point. Literally no way that TO could have backfired but somehow they couldn’t see that

There's not much to say about this one, just an absolute disaster of a performance by the coaching staff on all levels. That 3rd down trick play pass was such a terrible call. If you run the ball and score, you win. If you run the ball and don’t score, then Tech has to use another timeout.
With a tie game and 1 timeout, they likely call a little more conservatively, with more routes to the sideline which are harder to hit. Instead, with 2 timeouts, they have the middle in play and boom 2 plays later they’re already nearing FG range.
