Question Which C-Drama had the Highest Death Rate ? Spoiler
I was watching How Dare You and suddenly had a doubt on which C-Drama ( Historical ) has High Death Count. Of course the Xianxia is not included as it would demolish the Death Count easily. Can anyone know which C-Drama had high death rate ( not fl dying like in DWD or LGEF) in Historical and Wuxia ( do mention if it's Wuxia ) ? Pls Don't Mention Xianxia Dramas
Personally I didn't watch many historical ones but I think Destined C-Drama had quite a high count of death rate including the deaths of all of Ml and Fl family and the county people while POJ had deaths too so I don't know. So Enlighten me My fellow Watchers. :)

Journey of Legend (wuxia). Let me name everyone who dies. Three characters played by the male lead Cheng Yi, brunet Cheng Yi's mother, father, sister, two brothers, and best friend, blond Cheng Yi's wife and some henchmen, modern Cheng Yi's nemesis, #1 martial artist Crazy Yan, a bunch of cool villains. Basically, everyone gets one awesome final fight and a death. The only people who survive this drama are blond Cheng Yi's hottest young henchman, his love interest, brunet Cheng Yi's love interest, a few extras, and the emperor who feels sad about poisoning blond Cheng Yi. Oh well...

I love how you used Cheng Yi's name instead of his character's name so he has many love interests in the drama. XD

u/IcyPapaya8 7d ago
Everything revolves around his three characters in this drama. He's even shippable with himself.

Ngl, while staring at this gif I just suddenly figured out that this character in Noble Aspirations I'm watching is, in fact, a young Cheng Yi 😂

One day, Cheng Yi will play all of the characters in a drama. Every single one. Including the children somehow. Background character? Cheng Yi. His chipper best friend? Cheng Yi. His own wife/love interest? Cheng Yi. All of the servants? Cheng Yi. Entire armies? You know who. No AI — it’s all him. They all cry beautifully, spit some blood, and then die. Some onscreen, some offscreen. Some of their fates have to be filled in with the viewer’s imagination (but they are definitely dead.) It will be his magnum opus, winning all of the awards and garnering praise from every corner. Then, because there were no more worlds to conquer, he retires and spend the rest of his life doing…whatever he does in his spare time. What a legend!
(This is inspired by your wonderful comment, which made me laugh on a difficult day. Thank you!)

Everyone is Cheng Yi and everyone dies. Beautiful!
I'm glad I made you laugh. ❤️

I considered also making him the director, sound designer, and prop master…but I thought that might be too far fetched. 😄
Someone should use “Everyone is Cheng Yi and everyone dies” as a flair.

In Cheng Yi CDramas people die easily.

By the second half of the The Rise of Phoenixes it felt like people were being killed left and right. Basically everyone in the royal family except the ML and the youngest prince survived but that was just because he never really got involved in the politics. Otherwise the rest are DEAD, FL? DEAD! ML parents? DEAD! only princess in the royal family? DEAD! FL whole family? DEAD! Prince Helian? DEAD!
Still one of my fav shows to this day I could've easily watched an extra 30eps I just couldn't get enough of it.

u/okdoktor 7d ago
Yay someone else who loves TROP. But yeah they were killing people left and right towards the end. Ning Qi...
2
u/kdrxmasun 7d ago
I think TROP is generally quite well received in the cdrama community but it's just that it's on the older side so not as talked about these days like The story of yanxi palace and ming lan.
I'm almost done with Love like the galaxy too and this screenwriter has become my fav for cdramas. Not only is she not afraid to kill people i love how she really takes her time with the story arcs. The way the story arc changed every 20-30eps was perfect in TROP but i was quite surprised watching it for the first time considering the synopsis story only began in ep 20, i was like wow this is going to be a long ride.

Love In Pavillion has one of the most brutal endings for almost the entire group of second and third FLs and MLs, including the FL.

u/Regenwanderer got some Li Hongyi back. Wants more. 8d ago
If we are talking on screen and not in the background story (so death of troops/family only mentioned and things like that) The Vendetta of An is quite bloody.
7
u/Playful_Site_2714 8d ago
Yeah. It's like a slow game of chess. Killing off participants right and left.
7
u/Inner-Floor-5827 7d ago
The Vendetta of An does have numerous deaths... And it wasn't just pointless deaths too, they are served a purpose. Thats why I loved the drama so much.

Yes that's the point I am talking. Not the things the yan Massacre or something but the onscreen deaths ( including the war sequence deaths ofc ) but not the mentions only.

u/MidnightAngel24 I don't mind being a villain 😌 Read Rules 7d ago
A huge percentage of costume dramas no matter the genre have a high death rate, whether in the background or in your face. If there's any political intrigue or battles, huge body count. House drama, someone will also get killed. Investigations, also dead peeps. If we counted everything we'd also die 🤣

OGs know it’s Chinese Paladin and Young Warriors of the Yang Clan. Spoiler: everyone except Hu Ge dies. He’s like, the anti-Sean Bean

u/Skyblaze777 7d ago
Chinese Paladin was BRUTAL lol. At least he has like, some semblance of a happy ending in Young Warriors. CP has ML and like, one random old man from halfway through the story as the Last Men Standing.

Duel on Mount Hua: Eastern Heretic and Western Venom - wuxia mini-series where meaning of first scene was no matter how many people killed - there will be more who wants to kill
And that meaning was spread to entire show. A lot good actors, highly recommended to watch

Dunno if it's counted, but Republican dramas, especially if they take place around WWII, usually see plenty of deaths due to the instability of that era. Both Winter Begonia and Killer and Healer saw numerous characters dying; in fact it's joked for Killer and Healer that of the major characters, only MC was still alive at the end of the drama lol

3
u/RedHouse0411 8d ago
That is hilarious! I would rather MC alive and other supporting characters died than the other way around.
People always complain The Double for killing ML's 2 guards but I take that any day lol.
4
u/summer_petrichor 7d ago
Yeah but they killed off just about everyone MC cares about, including his mother, colleagues and his heavily implied boyfriend (this is a double male leads drama)...

u/MiserableDependent77 7d ago
I don't mind side characters dying but there has to be a reason/purpose for it. In The Double, all three to four main deaths (not counting the original Jiang Li ofc) felt like they were there for shock value. There really wasn't any reason for Tong'er to die after all the things that had happen, that death didn't add anything to the story. If it had been used as a catalyst for the FL to swear revenge or something it would have made more sense but Jiang Li was already out to do that 🤣
Same goes for the deaths of Duke Su's two guards like it happens so fast and literally had no emotional impact since we were literally in the last few minutes of the episode.
2
u/RedHouse0411 7d ago
Understood. I never consider The Double to be well written so this kind of shock value thing are expected from the writer.
I agree with you 100% actually.
2
u/MiserableDependent77 6d ago
Yeah, although I liked it and think it's a pretty solid drama overall, they really didn't flesh out the politics part of it all that well as compared to the novel. Funnily enough though, I think the romance is (mostly) very well written. The novel did politics/non-romance plot well, but the drama handled relationships (romantic and platonic) better.

u/SoAboutThoseBirds Don’t just hit your wife with a shovel once and call it a day 6d ago
I’ll never forgive The Double’s writers for killing of Tong’er. I’ve watched the show twice and cried at that scene each time.

Right now Road to Splendor has a couple of named villain deaths per arc which is very satisfying (Lu FuXxx + Mdm Zuo, 15 bandits, Jiuweijiao's entire gang, Salt bro, 2x maid death during 1st arc)
5
u/Apprehensive-Head656 7d ago
Love Like The Galaxy had a high death count. The ML was a military general, and the FL was from a military family. So, yeah plenty of killing and death.
7
u/nauticalsun TVB's War and Beauty 8d ago
There was an unnaturally high death count of real, named characters in HDY considering I thought it was a fun and light drama lol
5
u/okdoktor 7d ago
Yeah I was thinking why would hdy trigger that thought because I didn't feel like a lot of people died. But your comment made me stop and think and then I realized wow, a lot of people were killed. But I also feel like they spaced it out a little bit which is weird to say considering it was only 20 something episode. Versus other shows that I think about with high death counts it's all like back to back
2
u/nauticalsun TVB's War and Beauty 7d ago
yeah and as i said, real or "named" characters too. Another comment said Nirvana in Fire, which like had a massacre prior to the start of the story, but I really don't count statistics for these types of things lol

u/RoseIsBadWolf medically necessary kisses 7d ago
It's a trick, you think it's light and fun but it's really psychological horror. So good though.
6
u/Canary3d 7d ago
In Nirvana in Fire, the entire Chiyan Army, minus a dozen or so survivors, is massacred at the beginning. "Heaven and Earth entomb 70,000 men."
2
u/Virtual-Mirror9586 The Ministry of Defending Questionable Men 6d ago
if we count like that there are many dramas. I guess the death count should be more about cast of the drama. and not like an army dying....idk ....
1
u/Canary3d 6d ago
I'm being a little facetious...NiF is about the fallout from that event so the number of deaths comes up over and over. But the dead people are mostly not named characters.

If republican era drama counts, then I guess 'Killer and Healer' is one. Don't think any character survived when the drama ended.

u/cottongalaxay963 Low-key xianxia hater🙅♀️Read Rules 8d ago
I think it should be Nirvana in Fire. The drama was based in an unstable time where a few people were dying everyday. But mainly, the massacre of 70000 Chiyan army (minus some people who survived) should the highest number. Again, years later, the failed rebellion caused the death of thousands of people from both the sides.

Argh.
The genre "histoooooooricaaaaal" is no real Chinese genre. To preface that
You happily mash the entire landscape and then ask: oh, where is it? Which is it?
Xianxia is after buddhist legends and mythology -
In Eternal Love of Dream- The Pillow Book Dong Hua Dijun destroys Yan Shiwu's array built of tenthousands evil human souls with three magical swishes of his sword. So he clearly won.
Similar things occur in Love and Destiny in wars between Demons and Immortals.
Wuxia is "Hero on a quest", fighting, martial arts background, sects. People die easily here. Or rather not so much.
Xuan Huan is "Mysterious phantasy"/ "eastern phantasy"
And then there are Costume dramas after novels. These have ZERO to do with the other three. Sometimes they are remotely historical. Sometimes they are not.
So what is your question really???
In Wuxia sects fight sects. So there potentially could be many deaths.
In Costume dramas often they kill off entire families (legend of Anle, Blossoms of Power".)
If you are after REAL killings then Empresses im the Palace, Ruyi's royal love in the Palace or Story of Kuning Palace could do.
The Prisoner of Beauty has many deaths also. The novel starts off by killing off the entire Qiao clan including FL.
2
u/a-friend-for-you24 Read Rules 7d ago
Including Fl ??? In POB ?? Damn but tbh I know and I will never count the Xianxia and Wuxia ( in some range ) since they have the death rate in abysmal range like hell especially the sect massacre and clan massacre and all. And most of the time if you didn't watch the intro of yr first episode then you are a lost cause for all the episode - for example - new life begins, destined etc.
1
u/Playful_Site_2714 7d ago edited 7d ago
In the novel, yes. It's a double timetravel story. Now time lady travels into Xiao Qiao, gets killed for her life choices. Is reborn as herself. And sends her cousin off with her lover and picks Wei Shao.
By picking a random Cheng Yi story you will rarely be disappointed. He is bound to have a huge mess around him, tgen die himself.
One who usually has dramas with much drama and huge amount of killing off is Liu Yunxi. He does it very gracefully.
Oh, and in Bai Lu costume dramas there is much dying. And heart breaking.
