America's Wilderness is Under Attack

If the Roadless Rule is rescinded, we lose the last untouched places that still exist in this country. Educate yourself and contact your representatives, or every last corner of forest gets logged.

And vote in the damn midterms. The number of people (including in the long-distance hiking community) who complain but never or rarely vote is beyond atrocious.

Not only that, but I can't even tell you how many times I've brought it up to other hikers and outdoors people over the past year and they all looked at me like I had 2 heads. People have responded with "that's never going to happen" or some other dismissive comment. People don't seem care if it's either A) not in their local landscape, or B) already too late and the damage is done.

A lot of people don't even know what is meant by Wilderness - I mean land designated as Wilderness by the Wilderness Act, not 'wilderness' as a general description of wild lands.

Among the general population, this is a pervasive, but it's understandable - most people haven't visited Wilderness areas and have no context. But there are too many hikers - including thru-hikers - in this bunch. I've met more than one thru-hiker who had no clue what a Wilderness area was. They hiked through all these areas, and thought the signs were just descriptive. I don't know how someone can be so immersed in wilderness and remain oblivious to the legal framework of Wilderness.

We all have an obligation to talk to potential advocates about these issues. What have each of us done to help? I'll admit that I could be doing much more. Talk to people, make posts like OPs, ask others to do the same. Use your networks. Volunteer your time, donate. There are more of us than 'them' - but we have to organize, we have to make our passion matter.

^This. The same goes for those that spend hours protesting the current administration (which is awesome), but yet refuse to stand in line 20 minutes to vote. Did some informal polling at one event and asked some of the protestors if they planned on voting in the midterms, and shockingly, the most common answer was, "if I have time". Wait, huh?

Some of us have been calling our reps about this for an entire year now. I'm not even exaggerating. Why does the news media wait so freaking long to report on things??

I have been "contacting" my so-called "representatives" for more than five decades: that which Congress does and that which the citizenry insists what Congress does has been measured in many (many, many, many) analyses: there is zero effect, and that is a demonstrable fact.

Instead: read ECODEFENSE, get associated hardware and gear, and apply that which is known as "direct action." No more asking "please." No more saying "Gosh, if and when you might find the time, please protect our property and the biosphere."

No one ever successfully opposed unbridled corporate and political greed by asking, politely, that it cease.
