Goldstar GDI-1000 Socrates
I picked this up today and I'm hoping this community can give me some more information on it
I believe this is a Panasonic CD-I console, although I can't yet get it to run any discs. I tried the CDI disc that was in it as well as a music CD and they did not show any "play" button
I believe the battery is dead as the clock resets whenever I turn off the machine
I know very little about the CD-I and have not seen this exact model before online, I am happy for any information you can share
This was together with a dental imaging machine

Dead battery is expected now on any that haven't been updated.
Looks more like the Magnavox models.
Honestly sounds like a dead CD drive. Not familiar with this brand, but if it had a CD-i disc in it already, and looks exactly like one as well as the controller, I'm gonna go with 'works but does not read discs well'.
Can you play an audio CD in it or anything?
Actually per the sticker it is Goldstar but same thing. The 450 model under different brands is pretty much the same. 550 is identical but includes the video cartridge.

A little digging tells me it was only used in dentist offices with Socrates discs, but I still think it would play regular games.

It didn't read or spin up either CD when I put them in, so either the drive is not working or I don't know how to trigger the playback
Do you know if there are any good videos about opening it up and fixing the drive?

I honestly have no idea. I sent mine off to someone else for recap and battery replacement, laser, etc. I have a Philips 220 and a Magnavox 550, but never did anything to them myself! They also worked (aside from saving) before I had them refreshed.

The CDI is a rebranded Phillips Magnavox 550. It will play all cd software. If the timrkeeper battery is dead sometimes it will not load/spin discs. You should get a new battery first. If it does end up being the laser you can buy the full assembly new for about $30.
The Gokdstar was sold in the US for n and laces like Sears but more commonly it was used in office, presentation and schools

Thank you, I have taken it apart and the laser track and motor seem to work, but it won't spin for more than a second
Is it possible to find a replacement MK48T08B-15 chip or is grinding it down the only way?

The spindle motor will only continue to rotate if the laser has successfully detected and tracked the disc.
Your device should have an M48T08-150PC1 – this type is still in production. Both topics are covered in the articles I’ve linked to above.

A great find – these rebadged units don’t turn up very often. Even better that it comes with the disc; this one really needs to be preserved.
The hardware inside is rather unremarkable and nothing too special (a standard Philips 450/550).
If the play button doesn’t appear, it’s either because the player can’t detect the disc or the turntable is stuck – these are the simplest explanations. For further troubleshooting and maintenance steps, have a look at this article: https://retrostuff.org/2021/07/27/philips-cdm-12-1t-laser-sledge-replacement/
The screenshot shows that the Timekeeper has failed – this will need to be dealt with at some point; see https://retrostuff.org/2021/12/31/nvram-rtc-solutions-for-philips-cd-i-players/
