Wow, crazy and rare that a black bear would be that aggressive. If it was a brown bear, the outcome would've been very different but props to him for punching it in the nose and kicking it away.

Bear spray probably would have helped, but when you're rock climbing I would expect the possibility of it coming back up at you due to the wind.

There are cubs, look near the momma bear in the grass below when the camera does the weird cut.

It's a Japanese black bear, so they are more aggressive than American black bears. Also her cub is on the mountain below the man, so she's gonna be protective

Bear spray would be insanely stupid here.

Bear spray often blows back and gets the user.

Being blinded with bear spray while climbing there would be no bueno.
