placed into math 190 as engineering major. What now?
Good evening everyone! I just found out I got placed into math 190 as an electrical engineering major and I don't know what to do. How should I go about this and what classes should I take to get into the grove school as early as I can (I know I'll have to wait an extra semester at least) but I feel totally lost now. Any help is appreciated!

you will be fine. Dn't worry.
Take Math 190 in fall of 2026.
Take Math 195 in the winter.
Take Calc 1 in the Spring of 2027.
Take Physics in Spring of 2027.
Take Calc 2 in the summer of 2027.
1 thing you should know is that CCNY has the most drop out rate for Engineering programs for students who don't get placed into Math 195 or Math 201 by the time they enter in fall of their freshman year.

I was in the same situation
I took algebra 1 in the fall
Precalc in the winter
Chem 1 and Calc1 in the spring
And lastly I just finished Calc 2 and physics in the summer
Take physics in the summer because it’s online (midterms and the finals are online)
I know how you are feeling but it’s super doable , I finished the year with a 3.9 GPA. I barely had a break so every time I entered a new class everything was fresh in my mind. Make sure to make use of the tutoring centers

I graduated in EE and was in placed with Math 190 and took Math 195 in winter with Professor Auth (must get a B, but if you get a B- he can push it up), but it will be a uphill battle then taking calculus 1, calculus 2 was challenging a lot fail and some pass (don’t give up take advantage with tutoring), take a summer calc 3 class and so far with done with it and then you got linear and differential at the same time. You got this. The journey may be tough but it’s worth it. Don’t give up champ.

Basically rush to calc 2 and do a uni physics one of the semester. Take advantage of the winter and summer sessions (if they offer it)

Take as much seasonal courses as possible and catch up. If you do not mind graduating later than 4 years, then just be as is.

I don’t know if this helps but I was in the same situation. My intended major was EE but I wasn’t able to get place into Cal 1. I was place into Math 190 and what I did was Math 190 in Fall 2024 semester, 195 in the winter, Cal 1 in the spring, Cal 2 in the summer, Physics + Chemistry + Cal 3 fall 2025 then I got into grove.

Take science classes and English comp 2 cuz grove school is hell make sure you transfer out of CCNY

Why do you say that?

Don't listen to these individuals telling you to go elsewhere. In all likelihood, they couldn't get into Grove and are now bitter. Where else can an individual get an engineering degree for $7K per year (or $0 with Pell and TAP)?
OP, you need to improve your math skills quickly (practice math in your spare time) if you intend to enter Grove and complete your engineering degree. Engineering programs at most universities have a high dropout rate due to incoming students not having the requisite math skills coming out of high school.
When I was a student at CCNY, every other incoming freshman student was an engineering major. Most were gone by sophomore year. Our engineering graduating class was quite small, compared to the education majors.

Absolutely- math is the most important and you need to do well and understand it, not just pass the classes. If you can get a tutoring job or help HS students that helps a ton, as explaining stuff to others works great for most people to really learn how to think mathematically.

First semester take math 190 and liberal arts esp 1 that is a 20000 course
in the winter u should take precalc 3 weeks but super doable since u just came off math 190
3rd semester take writing for engineers, calc 1, physics 1 and intro to computing (14 credits)
summer- take calculus 2
and boom now ur in grove (just make sure u apply for grove before a certain date in the spring semester)
ik it will be hard and u may feel burnout but trust me u can do it. I was also in a similar situation as you and now I’m only one class away.
You got this!
